I got married at 2 PM at City Hall in Manhattan in a white silk Valentino wedding dress to a billionaire surgeon who slept on my rug last night. At 2:45 PM, my father who left us with $200 when I was twelve was waiting in my mother's ICU room at Mount Sinai because he saw the New York Post headline.
James drove fast from City Hall to Mount Sinai, marriage certificate in my white clutch, 1968 diamond band from Arthur Blackwood on my finger, Ethan Blackwood's hand tight on mine in the backseat, both of us still in wedding clothes, paparazzi chasing us.
"My father, Frank Mitchell," I whispered. "He left when I was twelve. No call. No birthday. Just $200 on kitchen table in our Brooklyn apartment and a note: Sorry."
Ethan squeezed my hand. "Do you want to see him?"
"I have to. My mother Helen Mitchell is in ICU after valve replacement yesterday 8 AM. She is asking for me. If he is there..."
At 3:10 PM, we ran into Mount Sinai ICU, white dress and black suit, marriage certificate, nurses staring. Dr. Chen saw us and nodded, "Your mother stable, room 4."
Room 4 had three people. My mother Helen in bed, pale but awake, tubes out, smiling. And a man in a worn denim jacket, early fifties, gray hair, my eyes. Frank Mitchell. My father.
And Lucas Blackwood standing in corner, arms crossed, smiling like at board dinner.
"Ava-bear," my father said, voice rough.
Twelve years. Last time I saw him, I was twelve, he was leaving.
Lucas spoke first. "Family reunion! I thought Mr. Mitchell should meet his new son-in-law, Dr. Ethan Blackwood, billionaire who paid $500k for his daughter. I found him in Queens, working as mechanic. He was very interested when I showed him the Post article at 5:45 AM today: BILLIONAIRE SURGEON'S SHAM MARRIAGE."
Ethan stepped in front of me, black suit blocking me from Lucas and my father, same as at gala terrace when Ryan Carter insulted me.
"Lucas, get out of this ICU room now. This is my wife's mother. This is Mount Sinai, not Blackwood Tower."
Lucas laughed. "It's my hospital too until board vote tomorrow finalizes. And Mr. Mitchell has something to tell New York Post about his daughter being a gold-digger from Brooklyn."
My father looked at me, then at my white dress, then at Lucas, then down at his hands, mechanic hands.
"Ava," he said quietly. "I saw Post. Headline said my daughter married billionaire for money. I... I came to see if you were okay. I took bus from Queens. I didn't..."
"Tell them what you told me downstairs, Frank," Lucas cut in. "Tell them how Ava always wanted rich man since she was little."
My father flinched. "That's not what I said."
Ethan's hand found mine behind him, holding tight.
"Dad," I said, voice steady, white dress armor. Queen's Strike-back, not in Valentino red, but in wedding white. "Did Lucas pay you to come here?"
Silence in ICU room. My mother Helen tried to sit up. "Frank?"
Frank Mitchell looked at Helen, his ex-wife he left with $200, now alive because of valve replacement Ethan assisted.
"Yes," Frank whispered. "He came to my shop at 8 AM. Showed me Post article. Said my daughter married billionaire surgeon Ethan Blackwood for $500k contract marriage. Said if I come to Mount Sinai and tell press she always chased money, he would give me $10,000. For your mother's bills, Helen. I thought... I thought you needed money."
Tears in his eyes. Mechanic who left with $200 now offered $10,000 to betray daughter.
I didn't cry. I had cried in $49 dress at gala, cried in bloody scrubs waiting room, cried in star pajamas at 6 AM leak. I would not cry in wedding dress.
"Dad, I had $412 three days ago because Ryan Carter stole my clients to start Carter Elite Events. Mom needed $78,000 surgery. Mitchell Events owed $60,000. I married Ethan at City Hall today at 2 PM for real, not for Post. He paid Mom's surgery at 7 AM before I signed any contract. He gave Mitchell Events $500,000 silent investment. He slept on my floor rug last night in Penthouse A Upper East Side to protect me from Lucas's PI. That is not gold-digger. That is survival."
My mother Helen started crying. "Frank, our daughter built Mitchell Events from nothing in Brooklyn. No father. Just me and Chloe Hart helping. She is independent, capable, brave. Just like I taught her."
Ethan turned, looked at my father Frank, gray eyes cold but not cruel.
"Mr. Mitchell, I am Ethan Blackwood. I am chief cardiac surgeon at Blackwood Memorial Hospital Group. I assisted Dr. Chen in your ex-wife's valve replacement yesterday 8 AM. She lived because of my hands. I married your daughter today at City Hall for real, with Judge and marriage certificate. Not $500k. Not contract. I love her because she told me my roses were too tall at charity gala in Blackwood Memorial Hospital Grand Ballroom and fixed them while my staff couldn't. I will take care of her and Helen for rest of my life, with or without your blessing."
Frank Mitchell looked at Ethan's black suit, my white dress, marriage certificate in my clutch, then at Lucas in corner.
"I don't want his $10,000," Frank said suddenly, loud. "My daughter is not gold-digger. She is... she is powerful. Like her mother. I left because I was weak, not because you were weak, Helen."
Lucas stepped forward. "You signed agreement, Frank. You take money, you talk to Post."
Ethan pulled out his phone, dialed. "Security? Mount Sinai ICU room 4. Remove Lucas Blackwood now. He is trespassing. And call Mark Sullivan at Blackwood Tower 88th floor. Add bribery to police report about stolen contract."
Security came in two minutes, same as at gala. Lucas was escorted out, shouting, "This marriage won't last 12 months! Board will see! I have original contract!"
Door closed. Quiet ICU room. Just me in white wedding dress, Ethan in black suit, Frank in denim jacket, Helen in bed, marriage certificate.
My mother held out her hand. "Ava-bear, come here."
I knelt by her bed, white dress pooling, diamond band 1968 shining.
"Frank came yesterday too," Helen whispered. "Before surgery. He brought $200 envelope. Same as when he left. He said sorry. He waited in waiting room whole four hours while Ethan operated. He didn't tell you."
I looked at my father. He nodded, tears now.
"I was in waiting room at Mount Sinai yesterday 8 AM to 11:47 AM," Frank said. "In denim jacket. You didn't see me. You were crying into Dr. Blackwood's bloody scrubs when he said Helen lived."
My father had been there. Whole time.
Ethan put his hand on my shoulder.
"Mr. Mitchell, would you like to be our witness that our marriage today at City Hall 2 PM was real? Not for Post, but for Helen?"
Frank Mitchell, mechanic from Queens who left with $200 twelve years ago, looked at his daughter in white Valentino wedding dress married to billionaire surgeon who saved his ex-wife.
"Yes," he said. "Yes, I would."
At 4 PM, we left Mount Sinai ICU, three of us, marriage certificate shown to Helen who kissed it.
In car back to Penthouse A Upper East Side, James driving, me in white dress leaning on Ethan's shoulder, exhausted.
My phone buzzed. Not Lucas. Not Post. Chloe Hart.
QUEEN! You left City Hall in wedding dress! Ryan posted video "Gold-digger Ava's dad appears at hospital - paid by Lucas?" It's going viral! And... Blackwood Gala is next week! Annual Blackwood Gala at Grand Ballroom! You must attend as Mrs. Blackwood and dance first dance with Ethan in front of press! It's in contract Clause 10!
Annual Blackwood Gala. Where I wore $49 dress and Ethan proposed fake on terrace. Next week, must return as real Mrs. Blackwood and dance first dance.
Ethan read text over my shoulder.
"Are you ready to dance with me for real, Mrs. Blackwood?" he whispered.
Before I could answer, his phone rang. Mark Sullivan, panicked voice on speaker.
"Ethan! Lucas just filed lawsuit at City Hall! He says your marriage today is invalid because you married under duress due to leak! He wants judge to annul marriage certificate before midnight! If annulled, you lose inheritance tomorrow!"
Midnight. Three hours to save marriage that became real three hours ago.
