I never knew the sound of a pen striking paper could feel like chains tightening around my wrists.
Damon’s penthouse office was silent except for the ticking of the gold clock on the wall. Floor-to-ceiling windows displayed a darker skyline, Manhattan blazing beneath us like a city built on broken dreams.
I sat in a leather chair, my hands quivering in my lap. Across from me sat Damon, his black suit stark against the faint lighting, his look chiseled from ice.
Claire, his assistant, placed a hefty contract on the table in front of me. My heart fell when I noticed its size was nearly three hundred pages, wrapped in black leather with Sterling Empire’s gold seal engraved on the cover.
“What…what is all this?” I muttered, my throat dry.
Claire flipped the first few pages with manicured fingertips. “This is your marriage contract, Miss Hayes. It contains financial stipulations, inheritance waivers, non-disclosure agreements, s****l commitments, and public conduct expectations.”
My stomach twisted uncontrollably. “s****l obligations?” I gasped out, my voice cracking.
Damon’s gaze darted up from his phone. “Did you think this marriage would be in name only?”
I shook my head, tears welling in my eyes. “I don’t… I don’t understand. Why do you need to control every aspect of me?”
He laid his phone down and leaned forward, his elbows resting on his knees. His gaze fastened into mine, dark and deadly.
“Because, Aurora,” he murmured softly, his voice like silk laced with poison, “in my world, love is weakness. Control is everything. And you… you will be my best asset.”
I flinched, feeling his words like knives slashing through my chest. “I’m not an asset. I’m a human being.”
He c****d his head slightly, a frigid grin crossing his lips. “That’s where you’re wrong. You ceased being human to me the instant you joined up for my world.”
Claire thrust a pen towards me. “Page seventy-three, Miss Hayes. Your signature, please.”
My hands trembled so terribly I could scarcely grip the pen. Tears clouded the black text as I switched to the page. My name was already printed neatly on the line: Aurora Hayes-Sterling.
My chest heaved with muffled sobbing. “What happens if I say no…right now?”
Damon’s stare darkened further. “Your family loses everything by tomorrow morning. And Ethan… well, I hear inexpensive rehabs aren’t very lenient with junkies like him.”
A sob escaped my lips, rough and shattered. “You’re a monster.”
He didn’t flinch. “Sign it, Aurora.”
I grabbed the pen so fiercely my knuckles became white. My entire body trembled as I pushed it to the paper.
With each stroke of my name, I felt a piece of my soul being taken away.
When I finished, I laid the pen down with shaky hands. Claire accepted the contract and tucked it inside a leather folder.
“Congratulations, Mrs Sterling,” she murmured coldly before departing the room.
For a minute, there was stillness. My tears poured across my blouse, staining the fabric. I didn’t glance up. I couldn’t.
Suddenly, Damon stood and moved around the table till he was in front of me. His aroma - mint and expensive perfume – wrapped over me like a smothering cloud.
He bent down so our eyes were level. His look was dark, unreadable.
“Look at me,” he whispered.
I pushed my eyes up, my vision distorted with tears.
His hand came out and touched my damp face, his thumb capturing a tear before it dropped. For a tiny time, his touch felt… compassionate.
Then his lips twisted into a chilly grin.
“Welcome to your new reality, Mrs Sterling,” he muttered, his lips touching my ear.
My heart froze as his hand crept around the back of my neck, pushing me closer until his lips lingered over mine. His breath was warm and smelt like cinnamon.
“But remember,” he said, his voice low and threatening, “in this world… love is just another chain.”
He pushed his lips tenderly on mine. The kiss was delicate but conveyed a sinister promise that made my entire body quake.
When he pulled away, his glare was darker than before.
“Your training begins tomorrow. Don’t be late.”
As his footsteps reverberated away, my tears spilled softly upon the marble floor.
What did he mean by training… and how far would he go to shatter me?
Damon’s grasp on my neck relaxed slightly, his thumb stroking my pounding pulse. My body felt frozen under his touch, yet my chest blazed with a peculiar fire I couldn’t control.
“Why are you doing this to me?” I muttered, my voice cracking.
He c****d his head, observing my tear-streaked face. “Because you walked into my world, Aurora. And now, you belong to me.”
“I’m not yours,” I yelled between clenched teeth, but my voice quivered with terror and something worse I couldn’t define.
His lips twisted into a thin, deadly grin. “You will be.”
His thumb touched my lower lip lightly, sending thrills down my spine despite my anger for him.
“You hate me now,” he said, his eyes hardening, “but soon, you’ll beg for me. For my touch. For my approval. For my mercy.”
A sob escaped my lips. “I will never beg you for anything.”
He moved closer, his breath warm in my ear as he muttered, “We’ll see about that, Mrs Sterling.”
Suddenly, his phone buzzed on the table. He pushed back, his jaw stiffening as he stared at the screen. Something flared in his eyes – anger… or fear?
He rose quickly, his entire attitude turning back to icy steel.
“Claire will show you out,” he replied, turning away. “Be ready tomorrow. We go before dawn.”
“Leave? Where are we going?” I asked, my heart pumping quicker.
He halted at the window, his wide shoulders stiff.
“Home,” he murmured without turning around.
Then, in a voice so low it was practically a snarl, he said, “Where your real training begins.”
My blood turned to ice.
What type of man takes his new bride away… simply to educate her how to belong to him?
