Through Fire and Smoke

464 Words
The air was thick with smoke, gunfire, and the metallic tang of blood. Bodies slammed into tables, chairs toppled, and shouts echoed from every corner of the Viper clubhouse. Raven's lungs burned, but adrenaline fueled her every step. Jaxon's hand gripped hers like iron. "Stay close!" he yelled over the roar. She nodded, her wrists still raw from the ropes, her heart pounding so hard it felt like it might burst through her chest. Every instinct screamed to fight — but they couldn't stop. Not now. A Viper lunged from the shadows, knife glinting under the dim lights. Jaxon spun, catching the man by the wrist, twisting him into a wall with a sickening c***k. Raven stumbled past, kicking another attacker away with the force of pure fury. "Through here!" Jaxon shouted, spotting a narrow stairwell leading to a back exit. They ran weaving through overturned furniture and debris. Gunfire cracked behind them, bullets ricocheting off metal and concrete. Raven's hair whipped into her face, but she barely noticed, her focus razor-sharp. "Almost there!" Jaxon called, his chest heaving as he pulled her along. They skidded down the stairs, landing in a dim hallway strewn with broken glass. Raven's father's booming voice rose behind them, rallying the Roses. Raven's heart wrenched at the thought, a strange warmth piercing the chaos around them. They reached the back door. Jaxon shoved it open, the cold night air slammed into them. Freedom was just a few steps away, but danger still clung to every shadow. A Viper appeared at the doorframe, gun raised. Jaxon didn't hesitate — he shoved Raven behind him, tackling the man out of the way. Raven rolled forward, drawing every ounce of strength to sprint the last few meters to the street, Engines roared. The Roses' bikes were waiting, their lights cutting through the smoke like beacons. Jaxon grabbed Raven's hand again, pulling her toward one of the bikes. "Go!" he yelled, helping her onto the back. He swung himself up as shots rang out behind them. Raven clutched him tight, the adrenaline still surging. Her chest burned, her legs shook, but she couldn't stop smiling — half from relief, half from the undeniable thrill of surviving the impossible. Jaxon glanced back, eyes sharp. "Hold on tight. We're not safe yet." The engine roared, and they tore down the street, leaving chaos, blood, and fire behind them. For the first time in weeks, Raven let herself breathe. The ropes were gone. Her father's trust had been placed where it mattered most. And Jaxon... Jaxon had proven he could stand with her — even against the world he'd been raised to obey. The night stretched ahead of them, dark and uncertain, but for the first time, Raven felt like she had a fighting chance.
