A suffocating tension gripped the lower levels of the Outcast Stronghold three days after Lyra’s failed escape.
Confined to the medical wing under reinforced iron locks and round the clock guarding, Lyra spent her hours pacing the cold flagstones. The heavy iron chains Kaelen had ordered were anchored to the central pillar, but Torin, exercising silent mercy, had left enough slack for her to reach the workbench, the herbal stores, and her narrow cot. She didn't waste energy cursing the iron; she spent her time studying the ceiling beams, calculating load weights, and categorizing the fortress’s limited apothecary.
The sudden shift in the stronghold’s atmosphere wasn't something she heard it was something she smelled.
The mountain breeze drifting through the narrow arrow slits no longer carried just frost and cedar. It was tainted with a sickly, sweet stench decaying blood, burning fever, and black bile.
Heavy, hurried footsteps echoed down the stone corridor. The heavy iron bolt slid back with a jarring screech, and Torin burst into the room. His face was pale beneath his graying beard, his tunic stained with dark, sweat-soaked grime.
"Medic," Torin barked, his usual measured tone fraying at the edges. "We need you."
Lyra didn't move from her cot, her dark eyes cool and calculating as she looked up at the seasoned warrior. "I thought I was a dangerous prisoner of war, Torin. A strategic asset to be chained to the stone."
"The young warriors in the lower barracks are collapsing," Torin said, ignoring her jab, though his jaw twitched. "It started with the scouts who returned from the Eastern Ridge yesterday. High fever, black veins along the throat, lungs filling with fluid. Three are already unconscious. Our resident healers are using heating stones and bloodletting, but it's spreading."
"Black veins and fluid in the lungs?" Lyra sat up straight, her medical instincts immediately overriding her bitterness. "Rot fever. It’s a spore borne infection from stagnant marshlands, deliberately cultivated in silver-poisoned water. Bloodletting will kill them twice as fast."
Torin pulled a heavy iron key from his belt, unlocked the band around her wrist, and let the chain clatter to the floor. "The Alpha is in the lower barracks now. If you can stop this, I'll answer to him for releasing you."
"Lead the way," Lyra said, already gathering dried willow bark, charcoal, and her leather pouch of surgical tools.
The lower barracks were a subterranean nightmare. The subterranean hall was packed with narrow cots, home to nearly thirty young Lycan warriors writhing in agony. The air was thick with heat, sweat, and the sharp, metallic tang of shifting beasts fighting an invisible enemy.
At the center of the chaos stood Kaelen.
He had shed his heavy armor, wearing only a soot-stained tunic, his broad shoulders taut with immense pressure. He was holding down a young warrior who was violently seizing, his single golden eye blazing with suppressed desperation as he watched his young pack members suffer.
Kaelen’s head snapped up the moment Lyra entered the room. His eye narrowed as he saw her unchained, a low growl rising in his throat. "Torin, what is she doing here?"
"Saving your pack from your own medical ignorance, Alpha," Lyra cut in, stepping directly past him without waiting for permission.
She dropped to her knees beside the seizing young wolf, placing a cool hand against the boy's forehead. His skin was burning, dark, spiderweb like veins crawling up his neck toward his jaw.
"Get those heating stones away from him!" Lyra commanded, her voice dropping into the authoritative, absolute tone of a master medic. "You're boiling his internal organs! Bring me clean well water, crushed charcoal, and every dry root of purple night-shade in your stores. Now!"
The young healers standing near the walls hesitated, looking to Kaelen for authorization.
Kaelen stared at Lyra. He saw no fear in her eyes, no lingering resentment for her chains only absolute, fierce focus. The mate bond surged between them, carrying her unyielding determination directly into his chest.
"Do everything she says," Kaelen roared, his command echoing off the stone vaults. "Move!"
