Shifting Loyalties

News of the miracle in the lower barracks spread through the Outcast Stronghold like wildfire over the next three days. When Lyra stepped out of the medical wing no longer escorted by heavily armed guards, but walking freely the atmosphere in the fortress had shifted entirely. Warriors who had previously glared at her with suspicious, hostile eyes now bowed their heads as she passed through the courtyard. Women carrying supplies paused to offer her quiet smiles of gratitude, and young recruits whispered her name with genuine reverence. She was no longer just a prisoner of war. She was the healer who had snatched thirty of their sons and brothers from the jaws of death. Lyra sat near the courtyard forge, sharpening a small silver scalpel on a whetstone, enjoying the rare afternoon sunlight. She was acutely aware of a tall figure watching her from the high wooden balcony of the main keep. Kaelen stood above, his arms crossed over his chest, his dark cloak snapping in the mountain wind. Since the night in the barracks, the space between them had become fraught with a new kind of tension. It was no longer the sharp friction of captor and prisoner, but a magnetic, dangerous awareness that pulled at them whenever they were in the same room. Torin approached her, dropping a heavy leather pouch onto the wooden bench beside her. "Fresh supplies from the lower village market," Torin said, taking a seat opposite her. "Dried silver weed, moon blossom, and fresh scalpel blades. Courtesy of the Alpha." Lyra looked at the pouch, then up at Torin. "He's trying to buy my goodwill." "He doesn't buy goodwill, Lyra," Torin said quietly, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. "He gives respect where it's earned. In ten years, I haven't seen Kaelen allow anyone man or woman to speak to him the way you do, let alone command his warriors." "He’s still an arrogant brute who abducted me," Lyra said, though the venom in her voice was noticeably absent. "He's a man who lost everything to a lie," Torin countered smoothly. "Ten years ago, a female claiming to be his fated mate opened our gates to an enemy pack. Half our people were slaughtered in their sleep. Kaelen lost his eye, his father, and his trust in fate that night. When he touched you in the woods and felt that bond ignite, he didn't see a blessing. He saw a knife waiting to be driven into his back." Lyra paused her sharpening stone, the metal scraping to a halt. She looked up toward the balcony, but Kaelen had already vanished inside the keep. "He thinks I'm a spy," she murmured. "He thought you were a spy," Torin corrected, standing up. "Now, he doesn't know what to think. And a confused Alpha is a dangerous thing, Lyra. Especially one who is falling for his mate despite his best efforts not to." Before Lyra could process Torin’s words, a loud horn blasted from the main watchtower a sharp, triple blast that signaled an incoming party under a flag of truce. The heavy courtyard gates creaked open. A squad of six elite Silver Shadow enforcers rode into the courtyard, clad in gleaming silver armor. At their head was Gideon’s chief advisor, a cruel, thin-faced wolf named Marcus. Marcus dismounted, his dark eyes sweeping over the courtyard before landing on Lyra. A sneering smile crossed his face. "Ah, the little runaway medic," Marcus called out, his voice dripping with condescension. "Alpha Gideon has been most patient, but his patience has reached its end." Kaelen emerged from the main keep, stepping onto the stone stairs with heavy, echoing footsteps. His broad shoulders squared, his single golden eye locking onto Marcus with lethal intensity. "State your business on my stone, Marcus," Kaelen growled, his voice vibrating through the entire courtyard, "before I have your tongue cut out and sent back to Gideon in a box." Marcus sneered, pulling a rolled parchment sealed with red wax from his tunic. "I bring an ultimatum from Alpha Gideon. Return the female medic to Silver Shadow within twenty-four hours, or we march five hundred warriors to your borders and burn every village under your protection to ash."
