Sixty-Six Marcus stood on the roof of the town council, with Karline crouched at his feet, watching as the lights went out in the houses below. Soon only the street lights provided illumination. For several minutes silence reigned. Then the town’s citizens slunk out of their homes to gather in the streets with their neighbours. Changed beyond recognition, teeth bared, snarling in rage, eyes shining, they loped through the streets, responding to a signal only they could hear. The street lights switched off, plunging most of the town into darkness. The only source of light was Ward headquarters, a tiny beacon of hope surrounded by a sea of freaks.
