Seventy-One Geoff winced, twisting his body to avoid the outstretched hands of a freak. He raised his gun, ignoring his discomfort, and stunned the freak three times, making sure he’d go down and stay there. The freak was still falling when an old half-breed dived forward and darted him. Geoff gave the old guy a quick smile before searching for his next target. The smile vanished as he looked over the parade ground. Most of the large lights had been smashed, the lone survivor illuminating a writhing mass of freaks intent on annihilating the Ward. Spread across the front of headquarters, the wardens fought desperately to keep from being overwhelmed. The threadbare line dwindled even further as more fell without anyone to fill the gap. Geoff shook his head at the senselessness of it all.
