Forty-Nine Miranda spun on the balls of her feet, dodging the grasping arms of the freak in front of her. She hefted her axe and stepped back to gain more room. With a smooth motion, she swung the axe in a wide arc. It caught the female freak in the throat. For a long second the two women stared at each other, the freak’s eyes perplexed, Miranda’s calm and considering. She yanked the axe back. A gush of blood poured from the gaping s***h and the freak toppled backward. Miranda found herself in a pocket of stillness and took a moment to catch her breath even as she scanned the battlefield. Everywhere she looked wardens fought with freaks. Bodies littered the ground, some wearing body armour but far more in tattered clothing. The freak virus gave no protection against guns and axes.
