TESSA One by one they got off the bikes, slowly stepping into the light. The Reapers were standing before me. “Boys, leave!” One of those thugs from behind shouted. “Our boss wants this girl alive.” The Reapers parted without a word, creating a path through the middle of the road. And then he appeared. Kyle stepped forward slowly, unhurried and completely certain of himself. The moonlight caught the sharp lines of his face as he moved, every eye following him. As he stopped, his blue eyes lifted and found mine instantly. For the first time, I was relieved to see him. I didn't think twice. I didn't care. With the last bit of strength left in my trembling legs, I forced myself forward. The darkness blurred around me, voices fading into distant noise. There was only one thing I could focus on. One person. Kyle Maxwell. I reached him before my courage could fail. And then I crashed into him. My hands fisted in the front of his black jacket as I buried myself against his chest, gripping the fabric so tightly my knuckles ached. He was slightly startled. I felt it in the way his body stiffened beneath my touch. But I didn't move. Neither of us. Then I wrapped my arms around him tighter. At that moment, I believed if I let go, everything holding me together would shatter. My fingers dug into his jacket, clutching the material beneath my nails while my heart pounded violently against his chest. I pressed my eyes shut and held on. “Tessa, I was only out for a few days, and you managed to call trouble.” His deep voice whispered into my ear. My eyes slowly looked up at him. “How will you survive without me, glasses?” “Enough! We're short on patience!” One of those thugs roared again, sending a shiver down my spine. Kyle looked into my eyes again. “How long are you planning to hug me?” Embarrassed, I quickly stepped back. The corner of his mouth curled before his sharp, devilish gaze shifted to those thugs. “Who's your boss? Michael?” The thugs passed each other a glance. “Either you leave now or I'll...” “Arguing over a girl now?” The heavy voice cut through the air, interrupting Kyle. Michael was here. “You and I go long back, Kyle. We've never interfered with each other's business. Just give us the girl and go.” “She's mine, Michael.” He wrapped his arm around my shoulders and snuggled me closer. “Right. She's our sister-in-law,” Zen mumbled. My eyes widened slightly. “Your woman?” Michael’s face turned pale. “The second you touched her… You broke the peace treaty between us.” I played along. I just wanted to get out of the trouble. “Sorry. Just forget about this, okay? We won't mess with her again. She doesn't need to pay the protection money either.” Kyle didn't say anything. He stepped forward, hiding me behind his broad back. “Raven, take her home.” “Y-You aren't coming?” I panicked. “Michael and I have a lot of things to discuss. Go back with Raven.” The urge to look back clawed at me, but I fought it down and climbed onto the back of Raven’s bike instead. The realization hit harder than I wanted it to. For so long, I had convinced myself I could handle everything alone. That depending on someone was a weakness. Trusting someone was dangerous. Yet somehow, Kyle had become the person I instinctively ran to when the ground beneath me started to crack. And now I was leaving him behind to face the fallout. Raven took me to the café to their room upstairs. I perched on the couch, biting my nails, and staring at the door. After almost an hour, the door opened with a soft click. I quickly rose to my feet. The Reapers stepped inside, perfectly fine. Kyle stepped through the doorway. For a second, the entire room seemed to blur around the edges. My eyes locked onto him and refused to look anywhere else. The moment he crossed the threshold, a wave of relief crashed through me so fiercely my knees nearly gave out. I hadn’t realized how terrified I’d been until that exact moment. “You're okay?” I crashed into his space. He slightly tilted his head. “Worried much?” The Reapers spread through the room, sitting on the sofa, chair, table, and even on the floor. “Of course, I was worried. Because of me…” “You always cause trouble,” Sky uttered the words, locking eyes with mine. “Didn't you permanently ban us from your café?” The sarcastic tone was quite evident. “I am sorry. I didn't mean to…” Zen interrupted. “Last time, we had to mess with the cops for that Snake matter. This time For knows what might happen.” He sighed. “Our leader nearly killed him.” My jaw dropped. I shifted my gaze to Kyle. He was calm and composed as if he was born yesterday. Without a word, I grabbed his hands, scanning for any fresh wounds… Until he locked his fingers with mine, pulling me a step closer. A soft grasp escaped my lips. “Micheal won't disturb you again. But we didn't help you for free, Tessa Vance.” “What do you want?” I struggled to free my fingers from his grip but he was too strong. “What can you do for us? We're always cleaning up your mess.” “Ehm… I can remove the permanent ban.” He let out a soft chuckle. “We don't follow rules. Let alone your permanent ban.” His lips moved closer to mine. “Do you have something better to offer?” The warmth of his breath kissed my lips, hot and fiery. I slowly gulped, feeling the heat of his fingers against mine. “Kyle…” “Tessa…” His gaze drifted down to my lips before slowly making its way back to my eyes. The look was pure provocation, and he knew it. Surrounded by his gang, I felt outnumbered, like an innocent lamb standing in the middle of a pack of wolves, while Kyle enjoyed every second of my discomfort. “Fine,” I whispered. He raised a brow. “Tonight, I'll be yours, Kyle Maxwell.”
