Thea's POV – 3:47 a.m.
Derek's bracelet was still glowing on my wrist when the howl cut through the night.
It wasn't a dog. It wasn't the wind. It was something deeper, older, hungrier. And it was too close.
I got up from the floor, my hands still shaking, the broken glass from the mirror crunching under my feet. My eyes no longer burned. The purple and yellow had faded, but I could still feel their echo behind my eyelids, like a heartbeat that refused to stop.
[Silk – Vampire]: "Listen... how fast her heart is beating. So scared."
[Jaws – Wolf]: "That's not a fear. That's prey."
I clenched my teeth. "Shut up."
But I couldn't help looking out the window.
The full moon lit up the backyard, and for a moment everything seemed quiet. The tree branches moved with the wind, and the grass shimmered silver. Then I saw it.
Two yellow eyes gleamed from the bushes.
They weren't Ezra's eyes. They were wilder, more erratic. And they were staring straight at me.
No... it can't be I whispered.
The figure moved. A slender body, covered in grayish fur, crawling like a wounded animal. But it wasn't wounded. It was stalking.
[Echo – Hunter]: "Don't stand there staring. Close the window, lock the door, and get ready."
[Whisper – Witch]: "Or you could open it. Let her in. See what happens."
Are you crazy? I muttered. I'm not letting her in..."
Another howl. Closer now. Coming from the other side of the house.
There was more than one.
The bracelet grew so hot it almost burned my skin.
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the nightstand. A text from Rebekah.
Rebekah: "Thea, are you awake? I just heard something really weird outside my house. Like... like an animal. But it's not an animal, is it?"
My heart stopped. If Tiffany was hunting, and if she was near Rebekah's house...
[Echo]: "Go get her."
[Silk]: "Leave her. She's human. Not your problem."
[Jaws]: "Yes, she is. She's your pack now."
[Whisper]: "Pack? No. She's your only friend. The only one who has looked at you without fear."
The four voices overlapped, but the last one rang louder. Because I knew it was right.
Rebekah was my friend. The only one who hadn't judged me. And now she was in danger because of me.
I grabbed my jacket, opened the window, and jumped.
The cold air hit my face as I landed on the grass. I didn't care. I ran toward the street without looking back.
Derek's POV – 3:50 a.m.
I felt the change before I saw it.
My bracelet. The one I'd given Thea. It was vibrating, like something inside it had been triggered. And then I felt her fear.
Thea I whispered, getting to my feet.
I didn't wait to think. I went out the window, silent, and ran. I didn't need light. I didn't need direction. The connection to the bracelet was enough.
But when I reached the street, it wasn't Thea I saw.
It was her. Tiffany. But not the Tiffany I knew. She was something else, something wild, with yellow eyes glowing in the dark and her mouth stained with blood.
Shit.
She wasn't a wolf. She was worse. She was a creation. And Thea had made her.
The voices in my head started to speak, but I silenced them. This wasn't the time. I had to find her.
And then I saw her.
She was running barefoot, her jacket half-on, her hands trembling. And behind her, the gray shadow moved through the darkness.
Thea, get down! I shouted.
I don't know if she heard me. It didn't matter. I lunged at the shadow just as it was about to pounce on her.
The impact was brutal. We rolled on the ground, but I was faster, colder. I pinned her against the asphalt, one hand on her throat.
Tiffany I said, my voice low. It's Derek. Do you recognize me?
She growled, but her body trembled. Her wild gaze softened for an instant, as if my voice had reached somewhere inside her.
Derek... she whispered, her voice hoarse. It hurts.
I know. But you have to control it.
I didn't know if it was possible. I didn't know if her transformation could be reversed. But I couldn't let her hurt anyone. I couldn't let her hurt Thea.
Ezra's POV – 3:52 a.m.
I arrived just as Derek had Tiffany pinned down.
Derek —I said, my voice cold. Let her go.
I'm not going to hurt her he replied, without looking at me. She's scared.
She's not a stray dog. She's a threat.
She's a girl who just transformed. She doesn't know what she's doing.
Thea stepped forward, her hands outstretched.
Tiffany. It's me. Thea. I'm not going to hurt you.
Tiffany looked at her, and for a moment, her body tensed. Then, slowly, she relaxed.
Thea... she whispered—. What have you done to me?
Thea didn't answer. She just knelt in front of her and hugged her. Derek let her go, and Tiffany collapsed into Thea's arms, trembling, crying.
Rebekah appeared at her front door, phone in hand, eyes wide.
What... what's happening? she asked.
Derek and I looked at each other. We didn't say anything. There were no words.
But we knew this was just the beginning.
Thea's POV – 4:15 a.m.
Derek's bracelet had cooled, but its warmth still lingered on my wrist.
Thank you I whispered, not looking at him.
Don't thank me he said, his voice low. I don't know if I can help you with this.
—Then why did you do it?
He was silent. Then, without looking at me, he answered:
Because I couldn't let you get hurt. Not you.
I didn't know what to say. Derek had always been a mystery, but that night, for the first time, I felt he wasn't a threat. He was an ally.
And somehow, that scared me more than anything else.
The Two Strangers and the Lady – 4:30 a.m.
On the hill, between the trees, the two hooded figures watched the scene. The Lady had gathered them there, in silence.
Stranger 1: "Did you see that? The girl... Thea... she hugged her. She didn't kill her. She didn't let her die."
Stranger 2: "That's what she does, isn't it? Play the victim. The good one. The one who saves everyone. But that won't last."
Stranger 1: "So what do we do? Let her keep going? Let her turn the whole town?"
The Lady (appearing from nowhere, her black hood covering her face): "Silence."
The two turned. Her presence made them tremble, though they didn't show fear.
The Lady: "You know nothing. You don't understand what you're seeing. Thea isn't just a creator of monsters. She's a hybrid. Four species in one blood. That hasn't happened in centuries. And if she fully awakens, if she learns to control what she carries inside... she'll be more powerful than anything we've ever seen."
Stranger 2: "And if she can't control it? What if she becomes a threat?"
The Lady: "Then it will be our responsibility to stop her. But for now... we watch. We study. And we wait."
Stranger 1: "And Tiffany?"
The Lady: "Tiffany is a consequence. But she's also an opportunity. The transformed one can become an ally or an enemy. It depends on us."
They fell silent, looking toward the town. The full moon lit their hoods, and the wind moved their black robes.
The Lady (quietly, almost to herself): "Soon, Thea. Very soon you'll discover who you really are. And then... you'll have to choose."
The mist began to envelop them, and when it cleared, they were gone.
Thea's POV – 5:02 a.m.
I took Tiffany home. I don't know how, but her parents were still asleep. I left her in her bed, covered with a blanket, and whispered that everything would be okay.
It wasn't true. But it was all I could say.
When I walked out of her house, the sun was starting to rise over the hills. And there, leaning against the wall, was Ezra.
Did you take her home? he asked, not looking at me.
—Yes.
—Is she okay?
—No.
He nodded. Like he already knew.
Thea he said, and this time his voice was serious You can't save everyone. You can't control what happened. But you can learn to control what you are.
And what if I don't want to be it? I asked, my voice trembling.
He turned to me. His green eyes met mine with an intensity that left me breathless.
You don't have a choice. You already are it. Now you have to decide what you're going to do with it.
I didn't answer. I had no words.
But as the sun rose over Witherbranch, I knew he was right.
And I also knew that night had changed everything.
