Chapter 9: Henry's Past 3.

752 Words
The next morning, the two girls woke up fresh and full of energy. They decided to go out and have fun—something they both desperately needed. After showering and dressing up, they stood in front of the mirror and immediately burst into laughter. “Damn, we look hot!” They high-fived each other, grabbed their bags, and called a cab. The day was full of lightness—music, drinks, dancing, laughter. By the end of the night, they were exhausted but happy. Lilith took a cab back to her place, while Wendy hailed her own. As soon as Lilith got home, she called. “Hey baby, you home yet?” Wendy picked up immediately. “Yeah, sweetheart, I’m already in.” They hung up, not knowing that this was the last peaceful moment they would ever share. --- The Call A few days later, Lilith was leaving the hospital after another checkup when her phone rang. An unknown number. “Hello, are you Lilith?” “Yes, who’s speaking?” “We’re calling from First Hospital. Your friend Wendy has been involved in an accident.” Lilith didn’t even wait to hear more. “I’ll be there in a moment!” She jumped into a cab, her heart pounding violently. When she reached the hospital, the sight before her nearly broke her. Wendy lay unconscious on the bed… Bloody… broken… barely recognizable. “This can’t be real,” Lilith whispered. “I was just with her. How did it come to this?” A doctor approached. “Are you her sister? We need approval from her parents. Her legs… need to be amputated.” “What?” Lilith’s eyes widened. “Amputate? No—what do you mean amputate?!” “The accident impact was severe. This is the only way to save her.” Lilith almost collapsed. She shakily called Wendy’s parents, and when they arrived, the news hit them like death itself. They signed the papers, hands trembling. Wendy’s legs were amputated. Just like that… she became crippled. When she finally woke, Wendy’s eyes were empty—hollow, defeated. Lilith tried comforting her, but Wendy simply stared off, looking like a ghost. “Disability isn’t inability, Wendy,” Lilith whispered tearfully. Wendy snapped, voice cracking with despair, “Easy for you to say. Yesterday I had two legs. Today I’m a cripple. What kind of life is this?” Lilith couldn’t answer. She stepped out and let her friend rest, though her heart stayed behind. --- The Nightmares Begin Soon, Lilith began experiencing terrifying nightmares. Night after night, she saw Wendy—covered in blood, face twisted, whispering: “Lilith… how could you do this to me? I trusted you… and this is what you give back?” Lilith always cried in her sleep, shaking, pleading. “Wendy… what are you talking about? I didn’t do anything!” But the dream-Wendy only glared at her with dead, accusing eyes. The nightmares became so frequent that Lilith stopped sleeping properly. She slept on the couch with the lights on, terrified to close her eyes. --- Visiting Wendy One day, she forced herself to visit Wendy again. “Hey Wendy… guess who’s here,” Lilith said softly. But Wendy barely looked at her. She seemed like a shadow of the girl she used to be—broken, hopeless, drowning. Lilith gently touched her arm. “Wendy… everything will be okay.” Wendy whipped her head toward her, expression sharp and bitter. “Okay? You say that so easily. Am I going to get my legs back? Tell me, Lilith—when you say ‘okay,’ do you mean miracles will grow them back?” Lilith swallowed painfully. “There are artificial legs… you can—” Wendy shoved her hand away. “Artificial? I had real legs. Why would I want fake ones? Just stop talking!” Tears filled Lilith’s eyes. “Wendy… why are you saying this?” Wendy glared, voice cold as ice. “Stop shedding those crocodile tears. You’re not the one who lost her legs.” “W-Wendy… we—” “No!” Wendy shouted so loudly the room vibrated. “Get out. I don’t want to see you. Ever again.” Lilith froze, heart twisting painfully. But Wendy turned her face away, breathing heavily, refusing to look at her. Lilith walked out… not knowing that this hatred—this sudden change— was not Wendy’s fault at all. It was the beginning of the curse.
