Chapter 6 You Need A Breeder

1332 Words
Sophia's POV Watching her cry like that filled me with vicious satisfaction. Blair shoved me back and clutched Lyra to her chest, screaming, “Sophia! That’s too far! How can you say something that cruel to a five-year-old child?!” “Cruel?” I looked coldly at the mother and daughter clinging together, then at Derek holding his broken nose while it healed. “Making a five-year-old child with organ failure have her marrow drained to save your daughter...” I laughed softly. “Do my words even amount to one ten-thousandth of the cruelty of what you people have done?” Blair shrank back. The bloodthirst in my eyes had finally frightened her. A woman like her—an Omega who only knew how to cling to men—couldn’t even bear a Gamma’s aura when it carried this much hatred. Trembling, she held Lyra and backed into the wall. Derek finally managed to stop the bleeding with Alpha healing. He sprang up like a madman. “You crazy woman—” He didn’t get to finish. I had no intention of giving him time to breathe. Before he could react, I threw another punch, this time using my wolf’s strength, and smashed it straight into the bridge of his half-healed nose. Crack! The bone shattered completely. “AHHH—!” Derek’s scream tore through the hospital wing. I flicked the blood off my hand—his filthy blood, blood that disgusted me—and walked into the shadowed hallway without looking back, leaving that pair behind me screaming themselves hoarse. The Third POV In the Pack Hospital lounge, thick gauze was taped across Derek’s nose. His face should have been handsome, but right now it looked dark enough to kill. He was on the verge of exploding. For seven years, Sophia had been nothing more than a tame songbird in the cage he built for her. He never would have imagined that in just two days, that bird would attack him three times in a row. “Derek, I’m so scared...” Blair sat beside him, tears falling like broken beads. “Sophia has really gone crazy. If she refuses to hand Olivia over, what are we supposed to do about Lyra?” “The doctors said Lyra’s life is withering away. If she doesn’t get matching marrow, she won’t survive this month.” Derek slammed his fist against the armrest. “Don’t worry. I’ll find another way.” “But...” Blair hesitated, then looked up at him with fragile, searching eyes. “The doctors said if there’s no blood relation, the rejection will kill her. Only Olivia...” Then she bit her lip and lowered her voice. “I’m sorry, Derek. I lied to you.” Derek froze. “What do you mean?” “That night back at the academy... it was my first time.” Blair’s voice shook. “Later I found out I was pregnant. But by then your family had already arranged for you to be with Sophia. I didn’t want to make things hard for you. I didn’t want to ruin your path to becoming Alpha. So I could only leave with the baby...” Blair collapsed into his arms, sobbing. “Lyra... she’s your flesh and blood. She’s your biological daughter.” Something buzzed in Derek’s head. Then a surge of wild joy blasted away the pain in his broken nose. “I knew it!” he said, clutching Blair tightly. “I knew it! Logan reacted the first time he saw her! I knew she was mine!” He stared down at Blair, almost shaking with excitement. “Blair, don’t worry. I will never let anything happen to our daughter. You’re my true love. Once Lyra is saved, I’ll throw that vicious lunatic out of the Pack for good.” “But we still can’t find Olivia...” A cold smile curled at Derek’s mouth. “Don’t let Sophia fool you. She definitely didn’t take the child far. Today is Thursday. By Pack rules, a pup Olivia’s age has to be at Pup Academy.” He rose to his feet, voice hard and certain. “I’m taking the guard there right now. If anyone dares stop me, I’ll execute them in the name of the future Alpha.” ...... At the other end of the corridor, the elevator doors slid open, and an aggressive black-wolf aura, dark as an abyss, flooded the space at once. Alistane strode out of the elevator. His dark-gold eyes swept across the corridor once. The nearby doctors and nurses immediately lowered their heads and instinctively backed away. His Beta, and also his most trusted friend, Leo, followed close behind. “Alistane, to be honest, the High Council has already started pressuring you.” Leo kept his voice low, his tone edged with helplessness. “If you want that chairman’s seat, you need to show those old men that your power is stable.” “And an heir—a pup carrying your bloodline—is the best proof there is.” Alistane gave a cold snort, impatience flashing in his golden eyes. “I don’t need breeding to prove my strength.” “But Alpha, those are the rules. An Alpha without a strong heir is like a skyscraper without a foundation. Even if you hold all the power now, those councilmen will still think everything you built will disappear the second you decline.” Leo shrugged. “You need a strong she-wolf. Or just find a breeder with a clean background. If you nod your head, she-wolves across the continent will line up at your door.” Alistane stopped walking. A faint cool scent brushed past his nose—rainwater mixed with herbs. That smell. Familiar. And one he had not caught in far too long. He went still and turned sharply. At the far end of the corridor, a pale figure vanished around the corner. “Alistane? What is it?” Leo followed his line of sight. His gaze stayed on that retreating figure for two seconds, then he sucked in a breath. “Holy hell... that can’t be... Sophia, right?” He rubbed his eyes, disbelief all over his face. “It really is Sophia. The daughter from that Gamma family in Shadow Pack.” Sophia looked thin enough for a gust of wind to blow her over. Her face was so pale she looked ghostly, nothing like the girl who used to shine back at the academy. Leo lowered his voice, unable to hide the mocking satisfaction in it. “I still remember back then, when we were in wolf academy, she followed Derek around all day. Every time he finished a ball game, she was there handing him water, wiping his sweat, smiling like some lovesick fool.” Alistane said nothing. But his gaze locked on the woman down the corridor, deep and cold as a frozen lake. “She really was blind,” Leo went on, oblivious. “Honestly, I felt sorry for you back then. Now look at her. She turned herself into this wreck. She deserves it.” “Look at her. Thin, weak, no Gamma fire left at all. And she’s still wearing that ridiculous mate ring. I’d bet next month’s paycheck she’s living a miserable life—” “That’s enough, Leo.” Alistane cut him off with one sharp warning glance. Leo jolted and shut his mouth instantly. “Okay, okay, man. Chill.” He pressed his lips together and wisely backed off, but inside, his thoughts were in chaos. What the hell was that look? Alistane had looked like he wanted to tear somebody apart alive. Leo thought he was saying exactly what Alistane should have wanted to hear. But Alistane paid no attention to his Beta’s confusion. Even after Leo looked away, Alistane’s eyes were still fixed in the direction Sophia had gone, staring until her shadow disappeared completely around the corner.
