CLEO
“Thank you,” I said after the doctor finished with my checkup.
She simply smiled and promptly left after gathering her things. “If you feel anything, anything odd at all, do not hesitate to inform Isabel. I’ll be back next week to check back on you, okay?”
I nodded, “Yes, I’ll make sure to say if I feel anything out of the ordinary.”
The doctor seemed excited when she came in here. Alpha Solan definitely sent her as she already knew what had happened. I guess the pack is really looking forward to the king’s heir. From what I know, Luna Vera has been by Alpha Solan’s side for three years now, but they still failed to conceive.
A part of me genuinely feels sorry for Vera. Despite her harsh attitude, she looked genuinely hurt when she saw me with Solan, and she seemed to have really done her best to be his wife and the queen alongside the Alpha King.
It’s another thing that fills me with so much guilt, being Alpha Solan’s fated mate. None of us had wished for this to happen, nor did we know that it was even possible at all. After all, it’s very unlikely that they would deem the most powerful alpha to be mated with a broken omega… though the doctor said that my heats might continue regularly from now on. I’m not a fan of the thought, but it’s how it’s supposed to be.
We still have to check in a few weeks to see if my supposed heat is already occurring normally. That is, if I don’t get pregnant from our first mating.
Alpha Solan promises to visit as often as possible, but I knew he’d be very busy. He had already sacrificed quite a lot of time just to accompany me in my heat, even staying longer just to ensure my heat was properly subsided before he left.
“Is she gone?” Isabel asked as she approached me, carrying a small basket of herbs and clean linens in her other hand.
I nodded. “The doctor said she’ll be back next week to check on me again.”
“Good,” Isabel replied, setting the basket down on the table and looking at me again, “You look much better today, too. You’ve recovered faster than expected. The color’s finally returning to your face.”
“I feel better,” I admitted with a small smile, eyeing at the basket of herbs she brought, “I’m just a little sore still, but nothing too uncomfortable. My body’s still adjusting, I think.”
Isabel gave a quiet hum of agreement and began sorting out the herbs from the basket after bringing the fresh linens to the couch. “That’s normal. After all, your body went through a full heat cycle, and the Alpha King himself tended to you. Most omegas would be bedridden for days after that kind of intensity. I guess he really did his best to be gentle with you. ”
My face tinted red with her casual remark. Solan really did. With the difference in our strength, it would be very easy to cause harm, but he remained level-headed as much as he could.
I smiled a bit, unsure how to respond. Even Isabel sounded excited at the thought of me getting pregnant. Everyone was hoping I would bear Alpha Solan’s heir as soon as possible. I should feel honored and proud that they felt such, but I still can’t help but feel worried for obvious reasons.
“Isabel… do you think it’s really all right?” I asked after a moment of silence, still watching him sort out the herbs.
She paused and glanced back at me. “All right about what, child?”
I hesitated, but the question had been running around in my mind for a while. “For an omega to carry the Alpha King’s heir,” I answered reluctantly. “Wouldn’t people find it… wrong? Or at least questionable?”
Isabel exhaled softly, leaving the herbs and approached, sitting beside me by the couch, “They would, at first. The public always talks, and you know how quickly rumors spread in the royal pack. But once they learn that you are Alpha Solan’s fated mate, no one will dare complain. Aside from being terrified of facing the Alpha’s wrath, the bond of fate is sacred. If the Goddess herself chose you, then it is the Goddess’ will that you bear the heir of the pack.”
She moved closer, her voice lowering as if she didn’t want anyone to overhear. “And the pack will see it that way, too. They’ll believe it’s the Goddess giving continuity to the Alpha line, especially since the Luna Queen has not been able to conceive. It will be seen as some sort of divine correction, not a scandal.”
Her words made my chest tighten painfully. “Luna Vera…” I murmured, guilt flooding me all over again. “She must be hurting so much. I didn’t mean for any of this to happen, Isabel. I never wanted to take her place. I still feel bad.”
Isabel’s expression softened, but it was replaced with a little frustration.
“Cleo,” she called, making me face her, “listen to me, if we weigh the situation, you owe that woman nothing.”
My eyes widened a bit, “What do you mean?”
“Luna Vera may hold the title of queen, but she has never been kind to those beneath her. I’m pretty sure you already know that,” Isabel replied.
Theodore has also warned me about Luna Vera, that she has her ways to get what she wants, and that she’s not easy to avoid.
I couldn’t help but remember how easily she hurt Theodore. Even if she was accusing us of doing something inappropriate, it wasn’t good to hurt someone without even an ounce of evidence.
Her voice went lower as she leaned closer, “To be fair, I think the Luna tried to be a proper queen in her own way. She performed her duties, stood beside Solan at every ceremony, and endured the Alpha’s indifference for years. But still, she was never the mate he wanted. The Alpha King didn’t love her from the beginning.”
I slowly nodded, “The Alpha told me.”
“Luna Vera was the one who fought for the title. Her family is the second most influential in the pack next to the Alpha’s bloodline. She has a deep connection with the pack council, so they always back her up. She did everything she could to become the king’s wife, but she could never win the king’s heart. It’s tragic, but she truly brought it to herself. Just don’t tell anyone that you heard it from me. I could lose my head for saying such things.”
I nodded quickly, “I won’t tell anyone.”
Isabel sighed, straightening her posture, “You must always be careful, child. She won’t give up her place easily, and I know she’d still be actively doing everything to stop this. But remember this,” she paused, and gently placed her hand over my stomach, “the heir you might carry will be your strongest armor. The Luna Queen can do nothing against the one chosen by fate and blessed by the Goddess to bear the future Alpha King. But you must do your best to protect the child when the time comes.”
My armor… I believe a double-headed spear would be a better analogy. The child, whether I like it or not, will be my greatest weapon and undoing.
Isabel must have noticed my reaction and quickly tried to change the topic. “Don’t think about it that much at the moment. What’s important is to stay at the top of your health. Focus on your current duty before anything else. The future is uncertain, but the present is in your hands to decide, okay?”
I gave a slight nod. “Focus on the present. Got it.”
