Three of Selena’s student flatmates peered up as Yarrow and Suzanne Fillmore entered the front room of the lodgings that they shared on Vernon Street. They were huddled together on a worn, sagging sofa, arms about each other, their eyes red from crying, their faces smeared with tears, sodden handkerchiefs clutched their hands. A fourth girl, having opened the front door to Yarrow and Suzanne, followed them into the room and joined the other girls, sitting on the arm of the sofa beside them, putting her arm about the nearest girl who briefly clutched her hand in her own in a gesture of mutual distress. ‘Sorry to intrude, girls, I can tell that you’re upset but we do need to talk to you.
