Chapter 13 — The Dance Later that evening, Clara escaped toward the balcony for fresh air. The city lights below glittered beautifully against the dark sky. “You keep running away from me.” Jace’s deep voice sent heat through her instantly. She turned slowly. “You keep appearing everywhere.” “That’s usually what happens when someone works for me.” Clara rolled her eyes. “You’re impossible.” Jace stepped closer slowly. “No. You’re avoiding me.” The tension between them thickened instantly. Dangerous. Heavy. Then suddenly, music drifted softly from inside the ballroom. Jace extended his hand toward her. “Dance with me.” Clara stared at him for a second before finally placing her hand into his. The moment he pulled her closer, warmth rushed through her body instantly. One hand rested against her waist while the other held hers gently. Too gently for a man like him. “You’re staring again,” Clara whispered. Jace’s gaze lowered briefly toward her lips. “You wore that dress knowing exactly what it would do to me.” Her breath caught. “You’re very dramatic for a billionaire.” “And you’re very distracting for an intern.” Clara laughed softly— then immediately regretted it. Because Jace’s expression changed instantly. Like hearing her laugh affected him too much. His hand tightened slightly against her waist. And suddenly… the dance didn’t feel innocent anymore.
