His parents scraped together the tuition to send him to elementary school at St. Peter Claver on Prieur, just six blocks from his home on North Roman. Louis, as it turns out, was born to go to school. The boy went through school work like an extra hot knife through thin butter. The teachers loved him, adored him, doted on him. He could do no wrong, and had the unusually good sense not to push his luck by doing any. Louis walked to school every day with his best friend Walter, who didn’t like “Walter”, so he decided in second grade that everyone should call him Wolf. The older Wolf got, the more and more appropriate it became.
