“Power is a very vague word… I could just go and kill that man that hurt her, but that wouldn’t be enough, would it?” The demon walked around and shielded the two from the rain with an all black umbrella that looked like an extension of his shadowy self. “I can grant the desperate anything they desire, all for exchange of your soul. What do you say?”
Those words felt like a stab to the woman’s heart.
A demon… a real demon… and her sister’s corpse on the ground…
This was the worst day of her life…
However, she couldn’t let it sit the way it was, Julia stood up and faced the demon, she spoke her wish swiftly, “I want--!” The heavy rain drowned out the sound of her voice, however the demon smiled widely.
“My… I’ve never had a human wish for something like that before… I see…” The demon’s remark was followed by a wide grin on his once more contorted face…
Chapter 3: Don’t Forget Me
***
“Hey, isn’t it painful? You have all these sharp pointy things all over… it must be uncomfortable…” Julia remarked as she slid her hand across the Reaper’s many spikes all over his body. “You don’t look very human…” she remarked carelessly as she laid on the sofa.
“Does this form suit you?” Benet said after he sighed heavily, and in the span of less than five seconds his body was transformed to that of a handsome man with a long black coat.
“Haha, now you look extra suspicious! Julia remarked carelessly, barely holding back her laughter. “Let’s see… can you change your hair to be lighter? Or maybe your clothes?”
“I like black clothes, and my hair in my human form is this…” The reaper, who’s voice sounded ever so robotic spoke in a monotone manner. The way he moved too looked far too sharp for a human being.
“Eh? No fun… no fun at all…” Julia’s shoulders slumped down in disappointment. Then suddenly she panicked. “Did you hear that?” she asked as there was a set of keys dangling, it was a faint almost unnoticeable sound, however she heard it well.
“It’s the door? You’re expecting guests?” Bennet turned towards the woman with a lack of interest.
“Not quite… see I’m crashing in this apartment, so…-” Before Julia could explain the situation, there was a loud bang, the door had been slammed shut.
“Who is he? Are you sleeping around you w***e!?!” A man’s heavy voice, the man looked decent, he wasn’t the definition of handsome but he had clean and harmonious features. However his grumpy voice and angry growl would suggest he’s not in the best of moods.
“Hey, well you’re my butler now, so how about you help me out here?” Julia panicked and suggested in a low whisper.
“I cannot interfere with humans that are not in my list.” Bennet simply remarked without a second wasted.
“You’ve gotta be kidding me?!” Julia started running and the angry man went after her. Bennet stood off to the side watching them chase each other like cat and mouse.
It was a comical scene, watching Julia navigate through the apartment, creating a whole new chaos in her wake, while the o man stumbled over his own furniture clumsily.
“There must be something you can do! What’s the use of being a damn God if you’re just going to stand there?!” Julia asked frantically as she escaped the clutches of the man after her. She was so skilled there was no doubt she’d done this countless times before.
“I am not an all powerful being, I follow a set of rules just like you mortals do.” Bennet continued explaining in a casual manner.
“Right, right… well then I guess I have to go!” Julia remarked as she headed towards the window and leaned back.
“Wait, f**k, we can talk about this… don’t do that…” The man that had been angrily chasing the other was suddenly stumped. “I don’t care if you cheated on me… whatever just don’t jump!” He begged.
“Haha… you’re silly!” Julia simply leaned back all the more and headed down. Bennet stood off watching all of that unfold.
“You stupid bastard! See what you did!? She died because of you!” Now the man re-derected his anger towards the reaper clad in all black. As if to shift the blame to him now rather than himself.
“I did no such thing. Though I wish I had.” Bennet replied earnestly, after all it was his job to collect the woman’s soul. But he knew for a fact the other wasn’t dead, because he could feel her soul’s wavelength moving vibrantly as before.
“You bastard! I loved her! She was a slut but I-” The man tried to put his hands on the reaper but there was an invisible force that repelled him.
“Refrain from touching me.” Bennet spoke quietly as he headed towards the window. With a single glance he could see that Julia had safely landed on the terrace of a neighbor beneath and them she exited though the man’s front door. All this was thanks to his sense of a person’s soul, he could pinpoint the woman’s exact location, that was currently outside the building.
Bennet jumped through the window and headed out.
“Wh-what?!” The stunned man that watched two people jump from his window was now looking outside and seeing them both walking side by side on the street.
Then with all the leftover audacity Julia had, she turned around and waved her hand happily at the man watching them.
“Who was he?” The reaper asked in a stone cold voice.
“Oh, just a guy I slept with, he thought we were dating or something but obviously we wouldn’t be.” Julia said as she sighed heavily at the misunderstanding.
“Obviously?” Bennet raised an eyebrow.
“Well, cause I’m in love with someone else! Always have been. I’d never be with that guy.” Julia said while glancing up at the man that was taller than her even in his human form.
“Hm? Then why would you do that with him? Humans truly are degusting.” Bennet spoke in a lowered tone.
“Yeah… you’re right about that, we truly are disgusting through and through…” Julia surprisingly agreed with the man’s statement, there was something in her manner that made her seem almost pitiful for some reason.
“What now? Where do you stay?” Bennet finally asked as they had been walking quite aimlessly through the city for a while now.
“Oh, about that… you see I don’t actually have anywhere to go!” Julia said confidently almost like she was proud of the statement.
“Ridiculous…” Bennet said as he stopped in one place.
“We’ll figure something out, I could crash at a friend’s place or something, or-” Suddenly Julia was grabbed by the man and dragged away somewhere. She didn’t ask much questions until they arrived. “Whoa…” She remarked seeing the simplistic but luxurious apartment they ended up in. “Are you like… super rich or something!?” She asked while jumping onto the large king sized bed.
“I get paid to be a Reaper of death.” Bennet spoke in a matter of fact manner as he sat down at a nearby chair. “I have to report back for my failure and ask to be re-assigned now.” He turned towards his desk.
“No, no, no wait! Do you really want them to think you can’t even kill a simple human? Besides I told you, I can be killed! I just need a few favors from you before you do it, come on, please, tell me it’s alright!” Julia begged the man as she held his hand, the gesture somewhat intimate.
Bennet sat there and stared back at the woman… This was a horrible situation…
Chapter 4: Un-killable
***
Slowly Bennet put away the communication device. Turning towards the other, he glared at her. “Tell me what is it you want, I need to finish this mission quickly.” He demanded.
“Well, it’s not that easy!” Julia remarked as she sat onto the bed again, she tapped the space next to her. “Sit down, will you?” The other was reluctant at first but walked towards her and sat down.
“See right now I have some bad guys I’m running away from, and I need your help with that. They raided my place so I can’t go back there right now.” Julia carefully explained, the Reaper simply sat there and listened. “I don’t owe them money or anything but well… I did take out some of their guys and I’m kind of in a tough spot, haha…”
It was a confusing jumble of words… first she wants a pretend boyfriend, then a butler, nor a personal bodyguard?!
“What are you afraid of? You cannot die. Usually such a revelation would make any human act out of character.” Bennet who as a reaper had seen the deaths of hundreds of thousands of humans, he knew for a fact how fickle they could be. He knew how self serving and unkind human beings were and especially close to death.
“Haha! Great question! See those guys don’t care to just kill me, they’ll probably make me suffer for a long time.” Julia explained. “If that’s the case I’d much rather just have you take my soul.”
“Then tell me how!” Bennet was already impatient.
“It’s… First I need something, take me here.” Julia said as she pulled out a map and showed a place that was marked with a bright red dot.
“You want to go to… Bulgaria?” Bennet questioned, looking down, Bulgaria was a very small country, so insignificant most people around the world had no idea it existed.
“It’s there… somewhere there is the person I’m looking for… if I get to see them one last time then, I will go out, how about that deal?” Julia asked him as she extended her arm.
“And why should I trust the word of a human?” The reaper asked while crossing his arms.
“You don’t need to trust me… but I’m telling the truth!” Julia who didn’t give a proper reason was still holding her hant in the air. “Come on… shake it, otherwise it’s not a deal, right?”
“That is true only for demons. My word is my deal, I will make sure you follow through on yours.” Bennet remarked while turning his back to the woman and heading to the bathroom. “We depart tonight.”
“Tonight? Are we going there with a plain? I kind of don’t have a passport…” Julia said as she chuckled to herself lightly.
“Huh?” Bennet was stumped for the first time in a while. Glaring at the woman that didn’t seem to have a care in the world.
“Oh, and also I kind of want to visit a few more places when we go, because I haven’t seen much of the world really!” Julia continued speaking to herself cheerfully.
“No.” Bennet spoke with a stern voice while looking down at the man.
“…but…” Julia couldn’t even get a word edgewise as the other picked her up by the collar of her shirt. With one hand the reaper was holding up the woman off the ground, high up in the air. A monstrous amount of strength…
“We are heading straight there and nowhere else. You will meet that person, say your goodbyes and then your soul will be collected, is that clear?” Bennet’s tone was so harsh one wouldn’t believe him to be a God at all.
“Man you’re actually evil right? The Demon was so much kinder than you…” Julia remarked as she was finally put down on the bed again.
“Kindness… is only a façade.” Bennet explained as he changed out of his clothes and into a fresh set.
“So… what kind of magic can you use? You seem very human like honestly…” Julia spoke a bit disappointed.
“It’s not good for a Reaper of Death to remain on earth for too long. My abilities weaken if I am to stay in the mortal realm for an extended amount of time. For now this will not be an issue but I cannot afford to remain here for too long.” Bennet’s voice was ice cold and his words carried a serious warning with them.
“I see, I see… so you usually just go and cut people down and then run off?” Julia asked him with a slump of her shoulders.
“What more would there be?” Bennet asked sternly.
“You know… life… didn’t all those people have so much they wanted to do and then suddenly they’re gone? It feels kind of anticlimactic if you don’t even stay there long enough to hear them out…” Julia remarked as she changed out of her clothes as well, borrowing whatever she could find in the closet.
“I had another reaper say that to me before…” Bennet spoke in a low manner.
“Well, maybe you should listen to him.” Julia smiled brightly. “Who knows! You might actually hear something so interesting that you actually end up sparing their life!” She suggested enthusiastically.
“That’s simply not possible.” Bennet said curtly. He knew it wasn’t possible. “Sparing a human’s life because of personal feelings, is unsightly for a Reaper.” He spoke coldly and then headed out the door, Julia followed after him quickly…
That same night, the man who’s apartment Julia had left, had mysteriously died from a heart attack…
