CALEB “Mum!” I shouted as I stomped heavily up the staircase. I was heading straight to her room, not the master bedroom, of course. She had abandoned that space the moment Dad became bedridden. Her excuse had been I don’t want to accidentally unplug one of his machines. But I knew better. That wasn’t the real reason. “Mum!” I yelled again as I pushed the door wide open without knocking. The sight that greeted me made my stomach twist. There she was—my mother—hurriedly tugging at her skirt, while her driver fumbled with his trousers, his face turning pale as his trembling hands tried to appear steady. His eyes darted away from mine instantly, blinking too fast as though that would erase what I’d just seen. “Good day, sir,” he muttered in a shaky voice. I let out a harsh, bitter laugh
