The moment I mentioned Mattew’s name, I knew I’d struck a nerve. Joyce’s face drained of color so quickly it was satisfying to watch. She looked as though I had yanked the ground out from under her feet. For a brief moment, I thought she might faint, but instead, she staggered and clung to Caleb’s hand.
“Mattew will never betray me,” she mumbled, as if saying it aloud would somehow make it true.
I couldn’t help it—I laughed. A deep, unrestrained laugh that shook my shoulders. Her blind faith was almost pitiable. “Betray you?” I repeated. “Come now, Joyce. For him to betray you, he would actually have to be working for you in the first place.”
“He was working for me!” Her voice trembled as the words left her mouth. She wanted to sound strong, but the tremor gave her away.
