CALEB “I bought some shares!” I burst out the very moment I pushed open the glass door to Mum’s office at the boutique, completely unaware that she wasn’t alone. Her secretary was standing at the far corner of the desk, pretending to be deeply absorbed in a pile of documents, though I could clearly tell she was listening to every word. The way her shoulders stiffened gave her away. I cleared my throat loudly, fixing her with a stare. “Aren’t you leaving?” I hissed. She had the audacity to glance at Mum instead of me. When Mum gave her the smallest nod, she gathered the neatly stacked files, pressed them against her chest, and walked out with that same slow, irritating calm she always carried, as if nothing could ruffle her feathers.
