Chapter Four: The Call of a Guardian

691 Words
Under the first rays of dawn, as sunlight gently pierced through the remnants of night, Iñigo and his father stood before an ancient mechanism, its surface intricately etched with symbols hinting at long-lost secrets. The air around them crackled with the tension of a moment poised to change history. "Your mother, Clara, she knew of this... called it the Immortal Data. A repository of knowledge so profound, it predates our oldest civilizations," his father's voice rumbled, harmonizing with the ancient stones underfoot. "Only Guardians are said to access its secrets, and only the parts destined for them." Iñigo, drawn in by the dance of holographic patterns, questioned, "But why? In an age where our tech surpasses all limits, why can't we just break into it?" His father sighed, a sound of many burdens. "Countless have tried, my son. This technology, it's alien, from realms beyond our grasp. When the Obsidian—our ruling authority—uncovered bits about the guardians' marks, it led to a disaster. The year of your birth was the same year many innocents fell." The weight of these revelations hung heavy in the air, an unspoken homage to the silent sacrifices. "How much do the Obsidian know? What data have they obtained?" Iñigo pushed, urgency weaving through his voice. "More than is safe, yet insufficient to master its essence," his father conceded, concern etching deeper lines across his face. "Fear is not our ally today. Today, we must act." Under his father's guidance, Iñigo placed his palm against the mechanism. A surge of energy wrapped around him, a red glow enveloping his hand as sparks orbited them, a miniature galaxy in motion. The hologram shifted, revealing a segment labeled "The Fire Guardian," ancient scripts transforming into readable text. "I knew it," his father breathed out, a blend of pride and wonder coloring his tone. "What did you know?" Iñigo's pulse raced with anticipation. "That you're one of the Guardians. Your mother saw the signs—the peculiar glow in your eyes when you were born, the red star in the sky that night, shining as if to herald your arrival." Overwhelmed, Iñigo grappled with the magnitude of his newfound identity. "A guardian?" he echoed, his mind racing. Carlos nodded solemnly, "Yes, son. The mark at the back of your neck confirms it." "So, those men at our house, they were after me?" Iñigo's voice trembled slightly. "Yes, targeting you and others like you," Carlos confirmed, a hard edge to his voice. "And the assessment at school?" Iñigo sought clarity. "A hunt for young Guardians," Carlos's words were stark. Iñigo felt a chill. "But years ago, newborns with marks similar to mine were killed. Why keep us alive now?" Carlos's gaze was grave. "That's what we need to discover. And this Immortal Data, it's key. We can't let it fall into the wrong hands." As they turned to greet the day, a blood-curdling scream shattered the calm, a harbinger of the chaos to come. "What's happening?" Carlos's usual composure slipped into alarm. "Another Guardian... they're near, in danger," Iñigo gasped, the connection to his fellow Guardian a sharp lance of pain. This revelation set their course. The day was just beginning, but already destiny beckoned them toward a crossroad, the call of a Guardian in peril too urgent to ignore. With a newfound resolve, Iñigo steadied himself. Ahead lay a path fraught with unknown dangers, the specter of enemies lurking in every shadow. Yet, the imperative to aid a fellow Guardian was undeniable. As dawn bathed the world in a golden hue, father and son prepared to step into the unknown, their journey marked by challenges that would test their mettle, their unity, and their dedication to a cause greater than themselves. Allies would emerge from unexpected quarters, foes would seek to derail their quest at every turn. But in this pivotal moment, as they stood on the brink of an uncertain destiny, they were bound by a shared purpose that transcended their fears, a legacy that linked them to the guardians of yore and the promise of a future where darkness is dispelled by light.
