The ghost we didn't expect

--- Chapter 11 – The Ghost We Didn’t Expect It had been a week since the rain-soaked night under the archway. Since she told him not to wait. Since he asked the one question she couldn’t answer. What makes you think I’m surviving it? Elena had barely been sleeping. Her lectures were sharp, polished on the surface, but beneath it all she was unraveling. Every word she spoke felt rehearsed, every smile forced. She felt like an actress in a play she hadn’t auditioned for — one where the set was collapsing and no one could see the cracks but her. She hadn’t seen Adrian again. Not in class. Not on campus. Not by accident. Not on purpose. She missed him. God, she missed him. But she knew distance was the only thing saving them from complete ruin. She told herself that over and over as she walked into the main atrium of the Humanities building that morning, balancing her coffee in one hand and a file in the other. “Elena?” The voice stopped her cold. Not because it was unfamiliar — but because it belonged to someone who belonged firmly in her past. She turned slowly. There he was. Mark Vale. Adrian’s father. Her ex-brother-in-law. Tall. Well-groomed. The kind of man who wore expensive coats even when it wasn’t cold enough for them. His presence was always crisp, rehearsed, professional — and deeply unsettling. “Mark,” she said, hiding the tremor in her voice. “This is… unexpected.” He smiled politely. “I was in town on business. Thought I’d stop by campus and visit my son.” Her stomach dropped. “Does he know you’re here?” “Not yet.” Mark’s eyes narrowed slightly, just a shade too observant. “I thought I’d surprise him. But it’s been hard to find him — he’s not in any of the classes I expected.” “He… transferred recently,” Elena replied carefully. “Changed his schedule.” “I see.” He studied her a moment too long. “And how are you, Elena?” “I’m fine.” “You don’t look fine.” She stiffened. “Is there something you want?” Mark stepped closer, voice lowering just enough to make her feel trapped. “Adrian mentioned you, you know. Once. Said you helped him a lot after his mother passed. That you were… there for him.” “I did what anyone would’ve done for family.” “But you’re not family anymore, are you?” That landed like a slap. She raised her chin. “We don’t speak often.” “And yet,” Mark mused, “he was devastated when you didn’t come to the funeral.” A wave of guilt surged up her throat. “I couldn’t.” “He said he waited for you.” Elena looked away. “What is this, Mark?” “I’m just curious,” he said, smile thin. “Adrian’s been… different. Quiet. Guarded. More than usual. I thought maybe someone had gotten close to him.” She felt the walls closing in. “I’m his teacher,” she said firmly. “Nothing more.” He nodded slowly. “Of course.” But his eyes said I don’t believe you. Then, almost casually, he added, “I’ll be around campus a few days. Maybe we’ll all grab coffee. Catch up.” He walked away before she could answer, his footsteps echoing like a countdown. --- That night, Elena sat in her car long after arriving home. The engine off. The world dark. Her thoughts racing. He knew. Not everything. Not the worst parts. But Mark was a man who could smell blood in the water. And she had just bled insecurity right in front of him. Her phone buzzed. A message from Adrian. “He found me. Said you spoke. What did you tell him?” She stared at the screen, pulse pounding. “Nothing. But he suspects. Be careful.” The reply came instantly. “I don’t care if he finds out.” She clutched the phone tighter. “I do.” “He can ruin both of us, Adrian.” “Then let him try.” Tears welled in her eyes. Not just from fear — but from the impossible sweetness of it. That he would defend what they hadn’t even fully named. That he would fight for something that still terrified her. She typed one last thing. “Don’t come near me for a while. Not until we’re sure he’s gone.” This time, he didn’t reply. And somehow, the silence felt worse than anything Mark could ever say. -
