Vanessa sat frozen on the bed, her breath uneven, her fingers gripping the towel wrapped around her body. The room felt too quiet now that Steve had left. Her heart was still racing, her skin still tingling where he had touched her. She closed her eyes, trying to steady herself, but her mind was a mess.
What just happened?
She wanted to believe it was nothing but a mistake, a moment of weakness. But deep down, she knew it wasn’t. That scared her more than anything.
Across the hall, she heard the bathroom door click shut. Water started running. Steve was taking a shower.
Vanessa swallowed, trying to push away the thoughts rushing in. She should let this go, forget it happened. But instead, she found herself standing up.
Her feet moved before her brain could stop them.
She stepped out of her room, her towel still clutched tightly around her body. Steve’s room was dim, the only light coming was from under the bathroom door. Steam curled from the edges, filling the air with warmth.
She hesitated.
Go back.
But she didn’t.
Vanessa raised her hand and knocked lightly. No answer. She knocked again, this time a little louder.
Still nothing.
Her heart pounded as she reached for the door handle. It wasn’t locked. Slowly, she pushed it open.
The room was filled with steam, fogging up the mirror. The shower was running, water cascading down Steve’s body, his back turned to her. He hadn’t noticed her yet.
Vanessa’s mouth went dry.
She should leave.
She should walk out, go back to her room, and pretend none of this had ever happened.
But instead, she stepped inside and closed the door behind her.
“Steve,” she whispered.
He stiffened under the water, his head tilting slightly like he wasn’t sure if he heard right. Slowly, he turned, his eyes finding hers through the mist.
Vanessa took a shaky breath, gripping the towel tighter around herself. “I... I don’t want to pretend this didn’t happen.”
Steve didn’t say anything. He just looked at her, his jaw clenched, his breathing heavy.
“I know it’s wrong,” she continued, voice barely above a whisper. “But I don’t care. Just this once... I don’t want to fight it.”
There was silence.
The only sound was the running water.
Then, finally, Steve spoke.
“You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
Vanessa stepped forward, closing the distance between them. She could feel the warmth of the water, see the hesitation in his eyes. “I do,” she said. “And so do you.”
Steve exhaled sharply, running a hand over his face like he was trying to snap himself out of something. “Vanessa, this…”
“Tell me you don’t want me.” Her voice was barely a whisper. “Tell me, and I’ll walk away.”
Steve’s eyes darkened. His hands curled into fists.
But he didn’t say it.
Vanessa reached out, placing a hand on his chest, feeling the rapid beat of his heart. “Please,” she whispered. “Just this once.”
Steve’s restraint cracked….
The air between them was thick, charged with something neither of them wanted to name. The water pounded against Steve’s skin, trickling down his shoulders, but he wasn’t thinking about that.
He was thinking about Vanessa…her standing there, her towel barely clinging to her frame, her lips slightly parted as she looked up at him with pleading eyes.
His body reacted before his mind could stop it. Every fiber of him was screaming to give in.
Her fingers slid up his chest, tracing the curve of his muscles, her touch so light it sent a shiver through him. “Steve,” she whispered, “don’t fight it, please.”
His breathing was ragged. His hands twitched at his sides. If he touched her, if he let himself give in..there would be no turning back.
Vanessa stepped even closer, pressing her palm flat against his damp skin. “I need this,” she murmured. “I need you.”
That was it.
As she was about to let go of the towel..
Steve grabbed her wrist…not rough, but firm. His grip was hot against her skin.
For a second, Vanessa thought he was about to pull her against him, that he was finally going to give in. His grip tightened slightly, his chest rising and falling with deep, uneven breaths. Their eyes locked and hers, were desperate and searching; his, filled with a storm of emotions that battled against his restraint.
Then, just as quickly as the moment had built, it shattered.
Steve exhaled sharply and let go of her wrist, stepping back as if she burned him. “No,” he muttered under his breath, running a hand through his damp hair.
Vanessa’s heart plummeted. “Steve, pleaseee!”
“No,” he repeated, his voice more forceful this time. His jaw clenched as he turned away from her, gripping the edge of the bathroom counter. His knuckles went white. “This isn’t what you want.”
Tears pricked at Vanessa’s eyes. “How do you know what I want?” she shot back, frustration laced in her voice. “You keep pushing me away like you know better, like you know what’s inside my head, but you don’t!”
Steve turned, his gaze dark and intense. “I know because I’ve been there,” he said, his voice low, almost pained. “You’re not looking for this, Vanessa. You’re looking for something else. And if we cross this line, it won’t give you what you’re searching for.”
Vanessa’s throat tightened. She hated that he was right.
Because deep down, she knew this wasn’t about desire.
It wasn’t about the way his hands made her shiver or the way his voice sent warmth through her body.
It was about comfort. About escaping. About trying to fill an emptiness she didn’t know how to face.
Her lip trembled as she looked at him. “Then what am I supposed to do?” she whispered, voice cracking.
Steve sighed, his expression softening. “You deal with it, Nessa. You feel it, no matter how hard it is. You don’t drown it in something temporary.”
Vanessa let out a shaky breath, swiping at her tears. She wanted to argue, to fight, to convince him and maybe herself that this was more than just a fleeting impulse. But the weight in her chest told her otherwise.
For the first time, she felt exposed in a way that had nothing to do with her body.
Steve reached out, hesitated, then gently cupped the side of her face. “You don’t need me like this,” he said, his thumb brushing away a stray tear. “And one day, you’ll see that.”
Vanessa closed her eyes, leaning into his touch for just a second before he pulled away completely.
Then, without another word, he walked past her, leaving her standing there in the silence, feeling emptier than ever.
And, she wondered if she had been searching for the wrong thing all along.
