The Emergency Quest

The first rays of dawn crept through Kael's apartment window. He was already awake. Instead of sleeping, he had spent most of the night practicing Mana Breathing. Although his body still needed rest, his mind felt unusually clear. A soft blue glow surrounded him before slowly fading. A familiar notification appeared. [Passive Skill Increased: Mana Breathing (F) → Mana Breathing (F+)] [Mana absorption speed has increased by 10%] Kael let out a satisfied breath,"So skills can level up through practice." That was valuable information. In his previous life, most hunters relied on expensive training manuals or rare treasures to improve their abilities. The Chrono System, however, rewarded effort just as much as talent. He stood and stretched. His movements were noticeably smoother than before even his senses had sharpened. He could hear birds chirping several buildings away and the faint sound of a television from the apartment next door,"I'm getting stronger." It wasn't much but it was enough. As Kael prepared breakfast, another metallic chime echoed inside his mind. A crimson notification appeared instead of the usual blue. His expression immediately turned serious. [Emergency Quest Issued] [Quest Name: The Forgotten Seal] [A dormant supernatural entity is attempting to break free beneath the abandoned Graystone Subway Station] [If the seal collapses, dozens of civilians will die, and the timeline will begin to diverge] [Objective: Investigate the source of the disturbance; Prevent the creature's escape] [Time Remaining: 6 Hours] [Difficulty: D-Rank] [Rewards: +2 Levels; 300 Experience; Random Skill Scroll; 100 Chrono Points] [Penalty for Failure: 87 Civilian Deaths; Hidden Timeline Alteration] Kael's heart skipped a beat,"Eighty-seven..." He remembered Graystone Station. It had been abandoned years before due to structural damage. No one had known that something was sealed beneath it. In his previous life, the seal had remained intact until after the apocalypse. "So why is it breaking now?" He frowned. History was changing much sooner than expected. That could only mean one thing, his return to the past was already creating ripples across the timeline. Without wasting another second, Kael grabbed a backpack, filled it with bottled water, a flashlight, rope, and a small first-aid kit. He wasn't powerful enough to rely on brute force but preparation could mean the difference between life and death. Graystone Subway Station stood at the edge of the city. Rusted fences surrounded the entrance, and faded warning signs read:DANGER — ENTRY PROHIBITED The place had been abandoned for over a decade. Broken windows stared like empty eyes, and vines crawled across cracked concrete walls. Kael slipped through a gap in the fence. The moment he crossed the entrance...a cold shiver ran down his spine. The air inside was unnaturally heavy even the sunlight seemed unable to reach deeper into the station. He activated Chrono Vision. Instantly, countless silver cracks became visible along the walls. They pulsed like veins,"So the seal really is weakening." He descended the dusty staircase. Every footstep echoed through the empty tunnels. Water fell from the ceiling somewhere in the darkness. The deeper he went, the colder it became. Then—a whisper,"...Help..." Kael froze. The voice sounded like a frightened child,"...Please..." His expression hardened,"An illusion." Low-level supernatural creatures often lured victims by mimicking familiar voices. He ignored it and continued walking. The whispers grew louder, soon they became dozens then hundreds. Each one begged for help and each one sounded heartbreakingly real. Kael never slowed. "I've fallen for this trick before," he said quietly. "But not again." After several minutes, he reached the old central platform. The tracks were covered in dust. Collapsed pillars littered the area. At the center of the platform stood an enormous stone gate engraved with ancient symbols. Black chains wrapped around it from every direction. Several of them had already snapped and a dark mist seeped through the widening cracks. Kael's face turned grim,"So this is the seal." As he stepped closer, the Chrono System chimed once more. [Quest Updated] [Objective Discovered: Destroy the Corruption Core feeding the seal] [Warning: Guardian Detected] A deep growl echoed through the station. The ground trembled. Something moved behind the stone gate. Heavy footsteps approached. A massive figure emerged from the darkness. It stood over three meters tall, its body wrapped in broken chains. Its skin resembled cracked black stone, and glowing crimson energy leaked from the gaps in its body. Two curved horns rose from its head and its empty eye sockets burned with scarlet flames. Kael immediately recognized it,"A Chain Ogre..." His blood ran cold. This wasn't a D-Rank monster,it was far stronger. The System either had underestimated the threat...or something had strengthened the creature from the shadows. The ogre roared and the sound shook the entire station. Chunks of concrete rained from the ceiling. Kael slowly lowered his stance. His hand tightened into a fist,"I'm nowhere near strong enough..." A blue notification appeared before him. [Hidden Condition Triggered] [The User refuses to retreat from impossible odds] [Temporary Skill Available: Time Acceleration (One-Time Use)] [Duration: 30 Seconds] Kael's eyes lit up,a small smile crossed his face,"Thirty seconds...that's all I need." The Chain Ogre charged. The battle for the future had begun.
