Return to the Beginning

Pain was the first thing Kael felt. Not the searing agony of a sword through his heart, nor the crushing despair of watching humanity fall. This pain was... familiar. A dull ache in his back. The stiffness of sleeping on a cheap mattress. The distant rumble of traffic outside a cracked apartment window. Kael's eyes snapped open, "...What?" He shot upright, breathing heavily. His heart pounded against his chest as his hands instinctively searched for the wound that had killed him but found nothing. His armor was gone. His broken sword was gone. There was no blood. Instead, he wore an old gray T-shirt and faded jeans. "This..." His voice trembled, "This can't be..." The room was tiny, barely large enough for a single bed, a worn desk, and a rusted fan spinning lazily overhead. Empty instant-noodle cups sat in one corner, and a stack of unpaid bills rested beside a cracked laptop. He knew this room. Every scratch on the wall. Every stain on the ceiling. Every creak in the wooden floor, "My apartment..." The apartment he had rented before monsters appeared. Before humanity discovered mana. Before the world ended. Kael stumbled toward the window. Outside, the city was alive. Cars honked impatiently. Children laughed as they walked to school. Street vendors shouted to passing customers. There was no smoke,no monsters, burning buildings and no blood. His hands gripped the windowsill so tightly his knuckles turned white, "I..." His voice broke, "We're alive..." A tear rolled down his cheek. For ten years, he had forgotten what peace sounded like. No screams,No explosions just... life. He closed his eyes, "I'm really back." --- A loud ringtone shattered the silence,Kael flinched. The old smartphone on his desk buzzed relentlessly. He stared at it as if it were an alien artifact, then he slowly picked it up. The date on the screen stole his breath-March 3rd and that was ten years before the apocalypse. His hands began to shake,"It worked..." The Chrono Core...The sacrifice...The silver light...Everything had been real. A notification appeared on the phone,Mom Calling... Kael froze because His mother had died during the first monster outbreak. He hadn't heard her voice in a decade. The phone continued ringing. His vision blurred and with trembling fingers, he answered, "H-Hello?" "Kael!" Her cheerful voice filled the room, "You finally answered! Were you asleep again?" He couldn't speak. "Kael?" "...Mom?" "Who else would it be?" she laughed. "Don't tell me you forgot your own mother." Tears streamed freely down his face, "I'm sorry." "What are you apologizing for?" "I..." His throat tightened, "I just... missed you." There was a brief silence, then her tone softened, "You're working too hard again." "I'm fine." "No, you're not. Come over for dinner tonight. Your father is making barbecue." His father...another person he had watched die. Kael clenched the phone,"I'll be there." "You promise?" "I promise." She laughed happily,"Good. Don't be late." The call ended. Kael remained motionless for several minutes, then he buried his face in his hands. This time...They would live No matter what. --- A sudden chill swept through the room. The lights flickered. The air grew unnaturally heavy. Kael's instincts screamed. He spun around, there was no one yet the atmosphere felt... wrong. Then-Ding. A clear metallic sound echoed inside his mind. Golden light gathered before him. High above the clouds, hidden beyond human sight, a tiny c***k appeared in the sky. From within it...A single crimson eye opened watching, waiting and smiling.
