Stacy rushes towards me. “It's okay, it's okay, I've got you, let's go.”
We head into my bedroom and I drop on the bed wailing. “He ridiculed me, made me look like nothing in front of everyone.”
Stacy hisses. “Damn, what Dimitri did is unforgivable.”
“And the worst part is I didn't even see it coming,” I cry harder with hiccups. “I'm so heartbroken. It hurts, it hurts like crazy, Stacy.”
Stacy sits besides me, holding me tightly and rocking my trembling body gently. “Shh. Take it easy.”
“I- I can't. What's happening to me is beyond natural.”
“What’s your wolf saying?” Stacy asks.
“Kema is silent. Now that I need her to guide me more than ever, she's quiet. I guess she expects me to figure this out on my own.”
“What if… no it can't be.”
I looked at Stacy confused. “What is it?”
“You see I heard stories, legends or whatever about those who got rejected by their mates and the trauma made them lose all contact with their wolf.”
I stood up “Wait, what? I know mate rejection isn’t rampant, but it happens once in a while, and I've never heard something like that.”
I start pacing and forcing a connection with my wolf, but I feel nothing. It is as if my wolf is dead.
“Sit down and stop panicking, it happens, but it's rare and there is a cure.”
I sigh with relief and sit beside her. “What is the cure?”
She looks at me sympathetically, then scratches her head. “Well you need to find another mate with a connection stronger than this.”
“Is that even possible? Most people have only one mate their entire life and those that get rejected rarely find another or settle with random people for convenience.”
“The chances of finding another mate is slim, but possible. Everyone has three promised mates, but only meet one in their lifetime. If you are extremely lucky you might meet the second and your wolf would wake up.”
“This is too much to process,” I start crying again.
“Bianca, it's going to be alright,” Stacy nudges me. “Stop crying. I'm sure you'll find your second chance mate.”
Still sobbing, I reply, “Okay, thank you. It's fine but please do not tell anyone about my wolf dying.”
Stacy nods and squeezes my palm. “My lips are sealed.”
“Thank you very much, Stacy, you've been a real friend.”
“Hmm, you should sing my praises more often.”
“It's fine, I'll be alright on my own. I need to be alone.”
“Okay, tough girl, I'll check on you later.”
Stacy leaves and I shut the door behind her. I return to my mirror and clear my vanity table with a swipe of my arm. The contents such as lipsticks, brushes, and various makeup products clatter to the floor, scattering in every direction. I lean on the table, gripping its edges tightly, and stare at my reflection. The person looking back at me seems like a stranger, her catlike eyes wide and frantic, her brown hair a tangled mess, and her makeup smudged from all the tears.
In a desperate attempt to regain control, I grab a makeup wipe and begin to clean my face. I toss the wipe down in anger and then punch the mirror, causing it to break and tear my hand. I look at my hand, which heals almost instantly.
Suddenly, I hear a loud knock on my door. I quickly go to check who is at the door, and then I see Ansel, Dimitri's beta. Ansel has always been loyal to me, but I know where his loyalty lies. I give him the best smile I can muster. “Hey, Ansel.”
He clears his throat, looking uncomfortable. “He wants to see you.”
My eyes widen, knowing the “he” Ansel is talking about. I don’t want to go, but disobeying an Alpha will only bring me trouble.
“Please don’t make me go,” I plead, knowing how little of a choice I had.
“Do not make this difficult, just follow me.”
I weigh my options; either I refuse to go then be forced and embarrassed, or go and still get embarrassed. I sigh, raising my head up. I look Ansel in the eye. “You will wait outside while I freshen up.”
He nods, and I slam the door in his face. I take a hot shower and get ready. I wear one of my best gowns and style my hair to look confident even though I don't feel it.
I open the door to see Ansel still waiting for me. I walk past him, and he follows me trying to keep up.
“Where is he?” I say with a cold edge to my tone. Ansel isn't used to me being this way.
“Um, he is at your usual meeting place,” his tone was placating. I give him a small nod, and we continue walking in silence until we arrive.
Our usual spot is a small house he dedicated to just us, a perk of dating an alpha I suppose. I used to love this place, but now I can't look at it the same way.
I open the door without knocking and see him sitting down on a chair deep in thought. When he notices my presence, he stands up.
“Bianca, you came,” he says, excited.
I roll my eyes.“I did not have a choice.”
He looked offended, good, because he deserves it. We both look at Ansel until he understands and leaves the room.
“Do not speak to me in that tone, my love. I know you are hurt, but I did what was needed,” his tone is stern but leveled. He tries to come closer, but I step back.
“Of course you did. Now tell me why I am here, my lord. I am itching to leave.”
He clears his throat and says, “You know I love you, but as an alpha, I must put responsibility first, and I cannot mate a woman with... your type of background.”
He pauses. He is basically saying he can't marry an illegitimate child. Did I come here for more insults? To be called an orphaned child?
Before I can say anything, he continues, “I still want to be with you, but well in secret. You will be my mistress. I promise to take good care of you, provide all your needs, and protect you from harm. No one who wants to live will treat you badly.”
I look at him shocked. Most women will jump at the opportunity of being the mistress of an alpha, but not me. I will not end up bringing another bastard into this world; no one deserves to face what I have. The offer is tempting, but I'd never forgive myself.
“I do not need your protection. I do not need you. I do not want you,” I say each word with a false confidence.
“You will regret this,” he says coldly, angry that I wounded his ego.
“If that is all, may I leave?”
“Get out of my sight, and I promise to make your life miserable as long as you stay in this pack.”
As I live I make him a promise of mine. “One day Dimitry, I will make you beg at my feet to forgive you for all the pain you have caused.” With that, I leave feeling free inside. If only Kema was here to back me up.
