Chapter 67. Strategic Move

1758 Words
The morning sun over the Hollywood Hills was brutal, cutting through the floor-to-ceiling glass of the Fortress with an uncompromising clarity that felt like an interrogation. Inside the master suite, the air was still heavy with the scent of sandalwood and the lingering heat of the night before. Rayna lay tangled in black silk sheets, the heavy weight of Caspian’s arm across her waist acting as the only anchor in a world that had felt, for a few hours, perfectly still. Then, the world ended. It started with a vibration. Not a soft chime, but the frantic, sustained buzzing of a phone on a marble nightstand- a digital death rattle. Caspian groaned, his grip tightening on Rayna for a second before he reached out, blindly snatching the device. Rayna blinked her eyes open, squinting against the glare. She watched the sleep vanish from Caspian’s face, replaced by a cold, calcified mask of fury. "Max," Caspian rasped into the phone, his voice a gravelly ruin. "This better be a fire." He went silent. His jaw moved, a rhythmic grinding that Rayna had learned to recognize as his highest level of internal pressure. He sat up, the sheets sliding down his muscular, tattooed torso, and his emerald eyes locked onto Rayna with a look of such profound, protective dread that her heart skipped a beat. "Keep the perimeter tight. No press. If a drone even grazes the property line, shoot it down," Caspian commanded. He hung up and turned to the massive monitor embedded in the wall at the foot of the bed. "Rayna. Look." He swiped his thumb across his phone, and the screen roared to life. It was a grainy, high-angle shot, likely taken from a long-lens camera or a high-end consumer drone. The footage was shaky, blurred from the cheap camera lens, but the subjects were unmistakable. There, on the rooftop garden of the Madison, was a flash of liquid emerald silk and a shock of forest-fire red hair. Rayna watched herself on the screen. She was laughing- a genuine, unbridled sound that the microphone hadn't caught, but her body language screamed it. Her head was tilted back, and her hand was resting on the shoulder of a man in a faded, oversized flannel shirt. The man’s face was a blur of pixels, but his posture was easy, intimate. The headline scrolling across the bottom of the PopVulture feed was a jagged blade: THE RED QUEEN’S SECRET CORONATION? UNIDENTIFIED LOVER SPOTTED AT PRIVATE BIRTHDAY BASH. "It’s Jax," Rayna whispered, her hand flying to her throat. "It’s just Jax. I was laughing because he made a joke about the tacos. Caspian, it’s just my brother." "The world doesn't know you have a 'brother,'" Caspian said, his voice dropping into that low, dangerous register. He began scrolling through the comments, his eyes moving with predatory speed. "They don't know that Iron Vanguard was there. To them, you are a goddess who dropped from the sky, and this..." He gestured to the screen. "This is a glitch in the goddess narrative." He tapped a trending hashtag: #TheGreyKnight. Rayna’s brow furrowed. "Who is Grey Knight?" "The most popular pop artist of the last few years- the King of Pop," Caspian snapped, throwing the phone onto the bed as if it were radioactive. "Grey is the industry’s golden boy. Squeaky clean, multi-platinum, and currently the only person the fans think is 'worthy' of the Red Queen. The internet has spent the last four hours convinced that the man in the flannel is Grey in disguise, playing some 'relatable' character for you." "That’s insane," Rayna said, throwing back the covers and pacing the room, the oversized hoodie she’d thrown on feeling suddenly like a straitjacket. "Jax looks nothing like a pop star. He usually looks like he lives in a garage! How can they possibly think-" "Because they want to think it," Caspian interrupted, standing up. He was naked, unashamed, and radiating a terrifying, focused energy. "The 'Riots' are in a frenzy. Half of them are heartbroken that you're 'taken,' and the other half are shipping you with Grey because it makes for a perfect tabloid story. The 'Secret Lover' narrative is a wildfire, Rayna. And wildfires burn down mansions." Caspian slid on a pair of sweatpants as the door to the suite slid open with a hiss. Max stepped in, his digital tablet already glowing with a dozen red alerts. He didn't look at their disheveled state; he was already in combat mode. "Boss, Thorne is on line one. The label reps for Grey Knight are on line two. And Grey himself just posted a cryptic heart emoji on his i********: story. He’s leaning into it," Max reported. Caspian let out a snarl that was purely animal. "Of course he is. Grey’s a shark. He knows a branding opportunity when he sees one. He’ll ride her coattails all the way to a Grammy if we let him." "We have to tell them the truth," Rayna said, her voice shaking. "Tell them it was a private family reunion. Tell them about Jax, Shane, and Leo. If we just explain-" "No," Caspian said, his voice cutting through her panic like a cold blade. His grip tightened, not to hurt, but to force her to meet his eyes. "Think, Rayna. This isn't about your history. It’s about their safety. Right now, you aren't just a singer. You’re an obsession. To 'The Riots,' you’re a goddess, and to the extremists, you’re a prize." He let go of her shoulders and began to pace the room. "If the world finds out those boys aren't just some 'secret lovers' but the only family you have- your chosen family, they become the ultimate leverage. Every stalker, every crazed fan who thinks they deserve a piece of you, will go through Jax, Shane, and Leo to get it. They won't just follow them; they’ll hunt them." Rayna felt the air leave her lungs. She thought of Jax’s laugh from the night before, the way Leo had been so excited about the vintage bourbon. They were scrappy, brilliant, and entirely unprepared for the level of predatory malice that came with top-tier fame. "They’re civilians in a war zone, Rayna," Caspian added, his voice dropping to a jagged whisper. "The moment the internet puts a name to those pixels, their lives as they know them are over. They’ll be cornered in grocery stores. Their apartment will be swarmed. And if one fan thinks they’re 'protecting' you from them? It’s not just harassment. It’s a body bag." The room went silent, the only sound the faint hum of the Fortress’s cooling system. Rayna looked at the screen again- the grainy image of her hand on Jax’s shoulder. It looked so innocent to her. To the world, it was an invitation to chaos. "Max," Caspian snapped, turning toward the doorway. "What’s the move?" "We need a redirection," Max said, leaning against the doorframe. "Since you haven't signed with a label yet, you don't have a PR team to feed a controlled story. We are the only wall between them and the truth. If we deny it's Grey, they'll keep digging into the 'flannel man' until they find a social media profile or a facial match. But if we say nothing..." "If we say nothing, Grey Knight becomes the shield," Caspian finished. He looked at Rayna, his expression unreadable. "It’s the perfect cover. The fans want it to be him. His team wants it to be him. If we let the rumor breathe, the spotlight stays on a pop star with a fifty-man security detail and away from three kids from Portland." Rayna shook her head, her red hair wild around her face. "You want me to let the world think I'm dating some guy I've never spoken to? To lie to the fans before I've even released an official single?" "I want you to protect your brothers," Caspian countered. He walked back to her, taking her face in his hands. His palms were warm, a grounding contrast to the cold calculation of the situation. "Last night was about bringing your home to you. Today is about making sure that home doesn't get burned down. Grey Knight is a narcissistic shark, but he's a lightning rod. Let him take the strikes." Rayna leaned into his touch, her eyes closing. The high of the party, the heat of Caspian against the stone wall- it felt like a dream she was being forcibly woken from. "Jax will hate this. He doesn't want me to hide him." "Jax wants you safe. And I know for a fact he wants his bandmates safe," Caspian murmured. "We don't need a label to tell us how to play this. I own the media channels that matter. We feed the 'Grey' narrative just enough to keep them satisfied, and I'll have Max move the boys to a secured loft in the city. No more hotels. No more thrift stores. They stay off the streets until this dies down." Rayna looked at the monitor one last time. The pixels were a blur, but she could see the love in her own expression. It was the most vulnerable she had ever been in front of a camera, and now she had to bury it under a mountain of A-list lies. "Okay," she whispered. "Do it. Protect them." Caspian pulled her into a brief, fierce kiss- a reminder that despite the rumors, despite the pop stars and the headlines, he was the one in her bed. "Max, start the scrub. Contact Grey Knight's management. Tell them we aren't confirming, but we won't issue a cease and desist on the heart emojis as long as he keeps his distance." Max nodded and disappeared into the hall. Caspian turned back to Rayna, his eyes dark with a possessive fire. "The world wants a romance, Rocker," he said, his voice dropping to a rasp. "We'll give them a fairy tale to look at. While they're watching the pop star, we'll be in the dark, building an empire they can't touch." Rayna looked at him, realizing that the "Red Queen" was no longer just a name- it was a strategic asset. And the King was already three moves ahead of the board.
