Chapter 65. Armor On In Front Of The Court

1486 Words
Suddenly, a voice cut through the quiet air. It wasn't the smooth, polished voice of a rockstar. It was a cracking, high-pitched, frantic voice that sounded like home. "If there isn't a taco bar at this fancy-ass party, I'm going to start a rampage!" Rayna froze. Her glass slipped from her hand, shattering on the stone path, but she didn't notice. She turned toward the sound, her breath hitching in her throat so hard it hurt. From the shadows, three figures emerged. They looked out of place in their thrift-store flannels and mismatched socks, standing in the middle of a multi-million dollar garden. Jax, Shane, and Leo. Jax took one look at Rayna- at the emerald dress, the red hair, and the way she was looking at them like they were apparitions, and his face crumpled. "Rayna?" he whispered. "Jax!" she shrieked. She didn't run; she flew. She collided with them in a mess of emerald silk and frantic hugs, the four of them forming a tight, sobbing circle in the middle of the garden. "You're here," she sobbed into Jax’s shoulder. "How are you here? I thought- I thought I’d never see you again without a camera between us." "The big guy in the suit," Leo said, wiping his eyes with his sleeve and gesturing toward Max. "He showed up at the hotel. Said the Queen was lonely." Rayna looked back at Caspian. He was standing a few feet away, his hands in his pockets, watching the scene with a quiet, triumphant satisfaction. He didn't look like a monster. He didn't look like a king. He looked like a man who had finally understood that the greatest gift you can give a woman who has nothing is the people who love her for no reason at all. The cool night air of the rooftop garden was filled with the sounds of a past life colliding with a high-stakes present. The sobbing, the frantic laughter of the Iron Vanguard, and the low-fi hum of the city below created a bubble of normalcy that Rayna hadn't felt in what seemed like an eternity. Rayna pulled back from Jax, her hands still trembling as she wiped at the mascara smudging her cheeks. She looked at Shane and Leo, who were currently staring at the thousands of fairy lights and the high-end spread of food as if they’d been dropped onto another planet. "I can't believe you're here," Rayna whispered, her voice still thick. "Caspian, how did you-" She turned, her emerald skirts swirling around her bare ankles. Caspian was standing near the edge of the stone path, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his tuxedo trousers. He looked every bit the detached benefactor- the cool, calculating King of Rock who had simply performed a generous logistical feat for a business partner. "Max handles the heavy lifting," Caspian said, his tone smooth and intentionally neutral. He didn't move toward her. He didn't reach for her hand. He kept a precise, professional five-foot perimeter between them. "The Vanguard was a security liability in Portland. Bringing them into the fold was the only logical way to ensure everyone stays off the radar." Wolf, who was leaning against the bar and watching the exchange with narrowed, hawk-like eyes, let out a short, dry chuckle. "Right. Logistical necessity. That’s why you had a private chef make street tacos and imported half of Oregon’s favorite craft beer." Caspian’s jaw tightened, a microscopic tell. "I believe in thorough hospitality, Wolf. Don't read into the menu." Rayna caught the look. She saw the way Caspian’s gaze flickered to her for a fraction of a second- a heat that didn't match his cold words, before he looked back at Jax. She understood the game. Here, in front of her brothers and his band, they were just the Mentor and the Protégé. The Protector and the Asset. The nights in the south wing, the whispered "Elijah," and the way he had held her after the deposition had to stay behind the reinforced glass of the Fortress. "Well, whatever the reason," Jax said, stepping forward and looking at Caspian with a mix of awe and lingering suspicion. "Thanks. For... all of this. For keeping her safe." Caspian gave a curt, regal nod. "She’s a investment, Jax. I protect what’s mine." The word mine hung in the air, vibrating with a double meaning that made the hair on the back of Rayna's neck stand up. To the boys, it sounded like corporate possessiveness. To her, it sounded like a vow. "Alright, enough with the suit-talk!" Dante shouted, breaking the tension by shoving a beer into Jax's hand. "If we're going to have a party for the Queen, let's actually have it. Thorin, start the music. Not the radio crap- the stuff we actually like." For the next few hours, the garden became a blurred sanctuary of reunions. Rayna sat on the grass between Jax and Shane, listening to them talk about the "circus" back in Portland and how the labels had tried to bribe them for info. She felt the weight of her old life anchoring her, keeping her from drifting too far into the "Red Queen" persona. Every so often, she would feel a gaze on her. She’d look up to see Caspian standing by the perimeter hedge, talking quietly to Max or Wolf. He never joined the circle. He never sat on the grass. He remained the silent observer, the architect of the evening who refused to take center stage. Around midnight, as Leo and Thorin were argued loudly over drum techniques and the Iron Vanguard were successfully raiding the vintage bourbon, Rayna slipped away toward the edge of the roof. She leaned against the cold stone railing, looking out at the sprawling carpet of LA lights. A shadow fell over her. She didn't have to turn around to know the scent of expensive sandalwood and the faint metallic tang of a dying storm. "Are you happy, Rocker?" Caspian asked. He stood a respectable distance away, his arms crossed, looking out at the horizon rather than at her. To anyone watching from the bar, they were just two colleagues discussing the night's success. "You know I am," she murmured. "I didn't think I'd get to see them again. Not for a long time." She glanced back at her brothers, then lowered her voice so it barely carried over the wind. "Why did you stay so far away tonight, Elijah? You didn't even say happy birthday once we got here." Caspian’s profile was like stone, but his voice was a jagged rasp. "There are too many eyes, Rayna. Wolf is looking for a reason to confirm what he suspects, and your brothers... they look at me like I’m the man who stole you. If I touch you, if I look at you the way I want to, this whole 'business arrangement' burns down." He finally turned his head, his emerald eyes burning with a restrained intensity that made her breath hitch. "I’m the King of this castle, remember? And the King has to keep his armor on in front of the court." Rayna reached out, her fingers just grazing the sleeve of his tuxedo- a touch so light it wouldn't be noticed from ten feet away. "The armor looks heavy tonight." Caspian took a slow, sharp breath, his hand twitching as if he wanted to grab hers and pull her into the shadows of the lounge. Instead, he straightened his cuffs and stepped back, reclaiming the distance. "Go back to your brothers," he commanded softly, his mask sliding back into place. "Enjoy the home I brought you. We’ll talk about the 'coronation' when the house is empty." He turned and walked toward Max, leaving her at the rail. Rayna watched him go, feeling the cold silver of her heels in her hand and the warmth of the emerald silk against her skin. She looked back at the messy, loud, beautiful group of boys by the fire pit. The secret between her and Caspian was a weight, yes, but as she watched him navigate the room with cold, effortless grace, she realized it was also a shield. He was keeping the world out so she could finally let her family in. She walked back to the table, sliding in next to Jax. "So," she said, her voice bright and steady. "Tell me again about what you said to Thorne’s assistant when she tried to take your phone." The party roared on into the early hours of the morning, a perfect, hidden celebration where the only thing more powerful than the music was the silence between the King and the Queen.
