6 Scarlett survived but her depression deepened and her soul split in two like Michael’s heart. She both rejected and clung to the son who was her greatest treasure. She suspected he needed a new father, but she was afraid of another romantic relationship though opportunities presented themselves. She doubted that any force on earth would make her whole again. Especially another man. Then came Michael’s ghost, riding the midnight air on hot wheels of fire and memory, descant to a melody of rip tide and fury. He had never lain quiet in his grave. The very walls moved with the rage that remained and the lights of reason dimmed and flickered in Scarlett’s brain.
