I looked over at the table filled with seniors and noticed that it had been vacated when I turned back to face him he was bending down to retrieve my phone he then stretched it towards me
"Thank you" I murmured as I collected it from him sticking it into my bag. A part of me wondered what he might be doing here, at my table.
"So?" he looked at me like he was expecting something
"what?" I asked confused and with good reason. You all know who senior Caleb is I just don't know why he was talking to me
He took the seat across mine placing his gold plated iPhone13 on the table, the look of amusement still very present on his face. "that drink...Can I buy you another?"
"Uhm......No, you cannot and that seat is taken I'm actually waiting for someone" What in the world is this verbal vomit going on with me. I think I just need to stick to one word replies from now on.
He leaned back on the sturdy plastic seat and looked around "So where is he....or she?"
"Running a bit late" I snapped at him a bit pissed, the fact that senior Caleb was here talking to me, a junior was bound to draw attention, I thank God this was a Sunday afternoon and people were scarcely around On Sundays but I just wanted him to get up and leave.
"I've been watching you for a bit now you're constantly checking your phone, pretending to be busy with it. I'm sorry to break it to you but it seems you've been stood up"
I hate, hate face to face conversations, I might not look it but I am extremely socially awkward I don't know how to hold a conversation with a stranger to save my life, it's so bad that whenever I'm going to the market to purchase something I always take Jess or Binta with me because I'm not very good at getting a good price for goods, trying to get the seller to give me a good price requires me to speak with them extensively, I'm not good at that so I avoid it and that leads to me spending more than I'm supposed to on certain things. But there was something about what he said or was it the way he said it that just irked me, maybe it was because my brain had actually come to terms with the fact that I had been stood up, it was just waiting for my heart to catch up
"I have not been stood up," I said "not that it's any of your business" I murmured as an afterthought
He smiled and leaned forward on the chair "So, is your friend always this late? because you've been here for...." he leaned back and checked his Rolex watch "......45mins"
"My 'Boyfriend' is very bad at keeping to time but he'll be here," I said in a defensive tone. I was really beginning to get pissed at David for making me go through this with a senior for that matter. No phone calls, no text messages, If he wasn't going to be here he should have told me."He isn't very good at keeping to time"
Senior Caleb was staring at me with a look of concentration and a slight frown that cause his forehead to scrunch up a bit "Even when he knows he's meeting up with you?" he asks softly
I buried my head staring at the table, what did he mean by that, I mean I know I'm David's girlfriend and it would have shown a little respect on his part if he didn't stand me up, change plans without consulting and constantly ignore me. I love this boy, I have loved David since before we even thought about dating each other but I am beginning to get tired of always defending him, his love for me, and our relationship.
I was about to tell him that David wasn't always like that even though he was, but he was still my boyfriend and this was still my relationship and I wasn't going to allow some outsider senior or not belittle it but a message on my phone stopped me from going on my mini rampage
David:Sorry, won't be able to make it today something important came up.
I feel like crying right now, I don't know if it's because he has done this too many times or because this time around senior Caleb was around to witness it.
"He's not coming.....is he?" I don't know if it was my facial expression or whatever that gave it away but he was looking at me with a sad expression.....with pity....and I loathed it.
"You still can't stay," I say. At this point, I am mentally exhausted. I just want to go to my hostel and rest....or cry
"Really?" he said "So you're not even the least bit interested in getting to know me?"
"I have a boyfriend"
"And you are far too loyal" he states "At least too loyal compared to what he deserves"
"You don't even know him" I was getting tired of people judging me and my relationship
"David Onikoyi, SS2, one of the few junior students to ever make prefect and he doesn't let anyone forget it, self proclaimed finest boy....lets not also forget he thinks himself god's greatest gift to the girls in this school" he recites as if he were reading from a book " oh....and in my very honest opinion he is also the undeserving boyfriend of a miss Savannah Adeleke"
How dare he say all those awful, untrue things about David. This was the final straw, my anger simmered over and suddenly I didn't feel like being in his vicinity anymore. I know he is a senior and by school code, I had to respect him, according to the manners and principles my parents and grandma instilled in me I cannot also be rude irrespective of his age but right now I just wanted to go to the hostel, I was already too wound up for this and any slight thing would probably cause me to explode. I got out of the plastic seat and picked up my bag and my empty can of Fanta to toss into the trash can. If I left it on the table the cleaners would have cleaned it up but I like to clean up after myself.
"Hey," he said standing up with me and grabbing my wrist. I pulled my wrist out of his hand immediately. What was that!
"Sorry," he said again pulling his hands back. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to go off on your boyfriend like that"
"I'm going to go back to my hostel soo.....find some other girl that requires your unsolicited advice....yeah"
I walked out of the common area and had barely gotten twenty meters down the road when I felt someone fall into step with me. I turned towards my side and lo and behold Senior Caleb was here..... again. Can't this guy just go away
"Leave me alone" I tried walking faster but of course, he was taller than me so one of his strides was practically equal to five of mine.
Damn my short legs.
"Your angry, I know and you have every right to be. I should have kept my opinions to myself"
"Yes, you should've," I said as I continued walking. I already stopped trying to lose him, his legs were too long and mine hurt.
"Savvy, I'm hurt," he said playfully.
"Savvy?? My name is Savannah"
"I know but I like Savvy better. Does anyone call you that?"
"No"
"Great! So I'll be the only one, I like standing out"
He doesn't even have to try, I mean has he seen himself, Senior Caleb stands out just by being himself
"You're talking like this is going to be a normal occurrence, like we're going to keep seeing each other"
"We go to the same school," He says like it's supposed to be obvious but he's forgotten one small important fact
"But we're not in the same class"
"details... details Savvy and besides Savvy means Intelligent so it's applicable in your case"
That pulled a small smile from me. He didn't say it flirtatiously or like he was trying to be flattering or to garner my favor, he just said it like it was obviously common knowledge.
"Uh...Thank you, Senior Caleb" if only I could blush, my face would be a tomato right now
"You can just call me Caleb"
"That's never going to happen" I deadpanned. Was he trying to get me into trouble with his senior girls posey? Those girls would skin me alive.
He sighed "I've never really liked the formal title that came with being a senior.....I mean I'm in Ss3 and everyone knows which means the whole school already knows I'm a senior so why attach senior to the back of my name again"
"I'd really love to know the answer to that but for now I suggest you take it up with the administration or the school board but as long as it remains a rule I am following it" We had already gotten to one of the guys hostels specifically the one Senior Caleb was staying in so we just stood in front of the gate of Washington hall, the best male hostel on campus. Only Elite students get to stay there and I heard senior Caleb has a room to himself in the hostel but I'm not going to ask him that.
"you have always been a stickler for the rules haven't you Savvy" He smiled and his cheeks dimpled as his lips stretched.
Those Dimples...
"But I would like to hear you say my name....just my name without the formality." he finished softly as he continued walking, away from his hostel
"Where are you going?? " I asked following him since he was still going my way
"I'm walking you to your hostel" he slowed down his pace waiting for me to catch up with him.
"you don't have to, I'm fine walking by myself" but as if I didn't just speak Senior Caleb ignores me and proceeds to walk beside me slowing down his steps to match my pace.
"We don't have to talk if you don't want to. Just take this as my apology for the things I said about your boyfriend, I shouldn't have said them to your face"
His apology sounded so weird, it was like he was saying that what he said about David was true but he shouldn't have said them to me so he wasn't apologizing for the false things he said about David just that he shouldn't have said them to me...
I sighed and decided to let it go
"Where did you even hear all those things about him, I thought you high and mighty seniors didn't bother with the boring lives of your juniors"
"you're right...I don't care about your boyfriend's life, I mean up until 30 mins before I approached you at your table in the common area today the only thing I knew about David Onikoyi was that he was dating Savannah Adeleke and to me that is the only thing about him that is important to me" he said as if he was talking about the weather.
I was officially confused and that was probably why I was opening my mouth and closing it like a fish out of water. I had a lot of questions about his statement but I didn't even know where to begin.
Senior Caleb laughed at my confused expression "This is you right?" he asked pointing at my hostel "Have a good evening Savvy" He said walking away, his hands in his pocket.
