The week flew by very fast and now the weekend was here. I'm not the most outgoing person some might say I'm an introvert, I prefer staying indoors reading novels, listening to music, or reading my notes from class, I've got to keep my grades up somehow.
I'm not the brightest match in the box, what I'm trying to say is I'm not naturally smart, I have to read my books daily and revise over and over before I get things to stick in my head. And I also surround myself with smart people and that helps too. But I already did all my reading and assignment during the week so I'm free to enjoy my weekend with David and the basketball team.
Stepping out of the bathroom I head towards my wardrobe. Jess was still asleep, or I thought she was
Jess was also my roommate in our 2 man room. We had 3 different female hostels in the school, all were in the same compound. There is Tubman Hall, named after Harriet Tubman, an American abolitionist who was born into s*****y, escaped, and set a lot of slaves free.
Then we have Parks Hall, named after Rosa Parks an American activist who fought for racial equality. She was called 'the mother of the civil rights movement"
And lastly, we have Ida hall, named for Ida. B Wells, another American activist, and leader in the civil rights movement. This was our Hall and it consisted of 2 and 4 men rooms.
Jess and I were in the 2 man's room. These rooms also had their toilets which was a blessing in disguise if you know what I mean.
"What are you doing up this early?? Jess asked groggily rubbing the sleep out of her eyes
It was 9 in the morning, there was nothing early about the time but seeing as it was the weekend anything after noon is early to the students of this school, especially after the long week we had.
" I'd like to spend as much time as I can with David today," I said dressing up. I was putting on skinny jeans and a flower print top that I could tie at the back. I loved the way the jeans hugged my hips and made my legs look longer and the blouse accentuated my slim waist and flat stomach. I just have to put on my Black leather Birken and I would be set to go.
"Are you doing anything today" I looked at Jess, she was checking her iPhone for messages. I should probably check mine too.
"the basketball game has been rescheduled," she began sitting up and scrolling through her phone we're playing the seniors this afternoon" she looked up at me with an annoyed gleam in her eye "and I'm sure you won't be able to cancel on his royal highness"
And she was right, the only reason I even suggested Saturday to David was that we were supposed to play on Sunday, guess that would be next time.
I ignored Jess and picked up my iPhone, it didn't look like her dislike for David was going anywhere anytime soon. She didn't like the way he treated me, I understand that she's just being my friend but sometimes it can be tiring.
Probably noticing my change in mood Jess said softly "Maybe if you guys are free you can drop by the basketball court. "
"Yeah, we'll try I said when my phone buzzed in my hand. I looked at it and saw David's name flashing on the screen I don't know why or maybe I did and I just didn't want to admit it but my heart sank because a part of me already knew what the text contains. I took a deep breath and tried to stay calm, and positive, I might be wrong.
-Hey savvy, I'm so sorry but I won't be able to make it today. Something urgent came up at home so I'll be gone all day, Let's do it tomorrow.
But my instincts were right, he was blowing me off.....again.
I'm not a b***h, I'm not saying he shouldn't prioritize his family but this is not the first or the second time an 'emergency ' has come up at home on the exact day we had plans.
I feel so frustrated and disappointed right now I could scream!! I have been waiting for this day all week.
" He isn't coming is he?" Jess asked Remorsefully
I shook my head 'No'
"What excuse did he give this time around or did he even bother giving an excuse?"
"Family emergency" I replied quietly "Maybe his mum is sick again or he needs to watch his siblings," I said making excuses for him while trying to look like I wasn't troubled.
"Stop doing that Savannah, stop making excuses for him. You want to know what I think?"
"If I say 'no' will that stop you from telling me?" I asked already knowing the answer. Jess gave her opinions bluntly and free of charge, whether you wanted it or not
"No" she gave me a blank look, "I think he did this on purpose, he didn't want you playing ball with Chris on Sunday so he pushed your date till then so you'll have no other choice than to go with him and not go to the game.....but look how wonderful the lord is, the game was moved to today" She finished with a grin on her face.
"I'm sure if you tell him he'll suddenly not have a 'Family emergency' anymore and be here," she said using her fingers to make air quotes.
I looked at my phone contemplating what Jess just said, maybe I should just...
"Don't even think about it, you know what don't even reply to his message just leave it on read, I know your reader's receipt is on, let him see that blue double tick that shows you've read his message. Ignore him"
I just stared at her confused about what to do. I guess I'm playing basketball today after all.

Jess and I walked onto the basketball court a little before noon trying to find the rest of their group. Jess had a pair of Joggers on and a grey round neck, she had a sports bra underneath when it was time to play ball she always took off her top and played with her sports bra. Jess had a nice figure, she had a tiny waist, a flat tummy, and moderate sized hips and she wasn't self conscious about her figure. She didn't take her top off because she wanted to show off she just wanted to play like the boys, that girl is a tomboy.
I was clad in a pair of black basketball shorts and a black wife's beater and we both wore our Nike basketball shoes.
Jess and I played basketball anytime we were free. It wasn't a school requirement to be part of a sports group but you at least had to be part of 3 groups, basketball was one of ours so we weren't strangers to the NBA and we understood the rules, though some say I don't fit the bill for a female basketball, probably because I'm kind of girly but I don't care, I enjoy watching the sports though I enjoy playing it more and it is kind of annoying that even though we're part of the basketball team we cannot play competitively with other schools because we're girls and the schools we play don't have a mixed basketball team just a boys team and I don't think they'd react too well to a bunch of girls beating them on the court.
"Heyyy, you guys made it," Chris said waving and walking up to us with a few of our team members
"yh we did " I answered smiling at him " are the seniors here yet??
"I think I see them on the bleachers" Jess pointed towards the bleachers on the other end of the court where a group of students dressed similar to us was sitting
"Everyone gather around" the sports perfect, senior Tayo said. We called him senior Tee, he was a cool and jovial senior not like the others that liked to laud their seniority over us. He was also fair, he didn't side with the senior class just because they were on his level he just said it as it was.
"This basketball group is going to be split into 2. The senior group will be playing the junior group. This is a rematch if I remember correctly"
Some of the senior Students were murmuring between themselves "we will just beat them again and call it a day"
I wasn't a disrespectful student and I don't go out of my way to try and disobey my seniors but some of them are just so annoying, most of us were the same age we only call them seniors because they are a year above us but still I strongly believe respect is reciprocal and it is earned. A few of them like senior Tee and a few others were so easy to respect.
"You all know the drill and I'm sure you remember the rules, let's keep the match clean please I won't like to bench anybody. Senior Tee finished as we all ran to the court to take our place.
" You have an admirer" Jess whispered into my ear from behind me
"Who?" I asked curiously.
" Senior Caleb was staring at you all the while Senior Tee was giving his speech," she told me giggling slightly.
"really? maybe there was something on my face" I rubbed at my face to clean whatever was on it.
"I'm sure that's the reason," she said giving me a sarcastic look "you can be so oblivious sometimes Savannah"
But I wasn't being oblivious, senior Caleb had no reason to stare at me like that. He was one of the most sort after seniors in the school.
Senior Caleb was about 6ft3, had dark skin, his hair was always on a very low cut and he kept a neatly trimmed beard. Most of the senior boys in our school kept beards but his made him look mature and distinguished.
He was also highly influential in our school, he wasn't a prefect but he had more influence than even the head boy of the school and all of the teachers respected him too, he was the most brilliant student in our school, his grades being the highest but when he was offered the position of the head boy he rejected it and left the post for his best friend, Senior Charles. Senior Charles was also one of the seniors that had my respect.
So now tell me what would a guy like that, a guy that could have any girl he wanted in our school or any other school want with a simple girl like me?.
I'll chalk Jess' observation up to what happened this morning with David. She would love it if I got another boyfriend and dumped David.
Chris called everyone together before the game to go over our game plan and after that, I went and took my spot on the line and waited for Senior Tee to blow his whistle. Because of what Jess already succeeded in planting in my head I sneaked a glance at Senior Caleb and lo and behold he was looking straight at me, I tried to hold his gaze for a while and waited for him to look away but he didn't budge, didn't turn away he just kept staring.
The whistle blew and the games began. It was two long hours of balls being passed and dunked but in the end, the seniors won again and I was pissed again.
