Blue-eyed creature

The glares being directed at Shantel from her siblings pointed out to her that she was the cause of the mess they were in. If she hadn’t screamed foul, the car would have taken them to their new house. “What are we going to do now?” Daisy asked, her eyes fixed on Shantel who buried her face down in guilt. “We just have to push it a little,” Maria laughed, getting out of the car again. “Push?” Derrick groaned loudly and heaved loudly, narrowing his eyes on Shantel. “This is all your fault, Shantel,” Derrick muttered before slipping out of the car. Shantel bit her lips, aware that Derrick was furious at her, they all were. Derrick only calls her by her name whenever he is angry, the situation they were in was enough reason to get upset. He was right, it was all her fault. Derrick pulled the bonnet open and bent over, trying to figure out what the problem was. There was no hope hanging around them because everyone knew that Derrick didn’t have the slightest idea about the mechanism. “Need help with that?” a sweet sing-song voice muttered, making them all spin around in surprise. Daisy, who was out of the car with Shantel, clung to Shantel’s shoulder, staring dreamingly at the handsome young man before them. Blonde sandy hair, mesmerizing blue ocean eyes, well-trimmed brows and lips, a sharp jawline, and a well-built body. “Hello dear,” Maria chuckled, trying to hide the embarrassment sweeping against her face. The man narrowed his ocean-blue eyes toward the car, and his eyes sparkled. “I could help with that,” he breathed out, not looking at the people around. He didn’t wait for permission before sauntering confidently towards the car. Shantel watched him curiously as he worked on some wires in the car. She wasn’t staring because of the unexplainable beauty but because of the striking familiar blue eyes. “Start the car,” he nodded at Maria after a couple of minutes. Maria walked over to the driver’s seat and ignited the car. A gasp left her lips as the car roared to life, ready to take off. She sprinted out and cupped the boy into her arms without thinking twice. “Thank you so much; you’re such a sweet boy,” Maria complimented, making Shantel twitch her lips in disgust. The boy was taken aback, he stepped away from Maria, his astonished eyes gazing at them. “Thank you for helping us out,” Derrick muttered, feeling slightly inferior. “You don’t have to,” he muttered a reply and fixed his blank eyes on Shantel. Shantel batted her lashes and looked away, flushing in embarrassment. “We are new here, we are headed to the Grey's House. I can drop you off if you leave nearby,” Maria suggested, to the dismay of Shantel and desire of Daisy. The boy chuckled as his eyes flickered with emotions that were hard to read. “I am Jerry Grey. My parents own the Grey House,” he introduced himself, making Maria’s eyebrow narrow in surprise. “What a coincidence, what a coincidence!” Maria grinned, waving him towards the car. “Then get in. We should treat our neighbor nicely, shouldn’t we?” Maria laughed and Daisy agreed instantly. Shantel’s heart dropped as she looked at him and found those frightening eyes on her. She couldn’t believe that she would be sitting with this strange boy in the suffocating car. It was all her fault; now she has to pay for it by sitting down with a boy who came out of nowhere. She wondered how her mom was able to believe such a baseless introduction. There was only one way Shantel could get out of this fix: sitting in the front seat. She ignored the conversation between them and sprinted for the car. Her heart constricted as she pulled the door open and found Derrick sitting comfortably on the seat she desired. Derrick tilted his neck and stared at her with sad eyes. “I thought I was the only one who finds that guy weird.” Shantel was too angry to respond to Derrick’s truthful words. Instead, she slammed the door shut and got into the backseat. Her next prayer was to sit next to her sister. As much as she hated it, she wouldn’t mind having Daisy’s chattering voice pulling out her sanity. The door opened and someone slipped into the seat next to Shantel. Her belly churned as a scent swept past her nose. Even without glancing at his face, she knew it was him, the same guy she had always eluded was sitting right next to her. Why wasn’t it Daisy, why? She bit her lips till blood oozed out slowly from it. “You will wound yourself if you keep doing that,” a soft melodic voice whispered into her ear, causing an unexpected reaction in her. She stopped biting her lips and shifted uncomfortably in the seat, her heartbeat increasing by the minute. “I have always looked forward to making friends in the Silver-line town; I hope we become great friends, Jerry,” Daisy began, straining the word ‘great.’ Jerry smiled lightly at her and glanced at Shantel, who didn’t seem to be paying attention to the conversation. “Are you okay?” Jerry asked aloud, his eyes on Shantel. Daisy’s lips pursed out in surprise and Shantel shuddered as his voice drifted into her mind. “Yes,” Shantel breathed out and shut her eyes, pretending to be asleep. She desperately hoped that they would get to the Grey House soon so she wouldn’t have this weird stranger rubbing his shoulder against hers. “Here!” Maria’s exclamation made Shantel’s snap open. She straightened up and poked her head out of the window. It wasn’t the lonely highway anymore; they were in a beautiful, inhibited area full of houses, beautiful plants, and a wonderful landscape overhead. Shantel realized, to her defeat, that Silver-line was as beautiful as Daisy described it to be. “Won't you get out, Shanty?” Derrick called out, plunging her out of her reverie. Shantel muttered a low apology and slipped out of the car. She staggered towards the trunk and pulled it open before taking out her suitcases. “Woah, this place looks great!” Derrick laughed, getting over the weirdness. “Get my suitcase, Shanty!” Daisy called out before dragging Jerry off. “Mine too!” Derrick added, trailing after them. Shantel shot a hateful glare at their back before carrying out the suitcases. “Are you the new neighbor?” a voice chipped behind Shantel making her spin around. She stared at the brown-haired girl with large chestnut eyes staring back at her. “Who are you?” Shantel asked instead of saying ‘yes’. “I am Cleopatra Elias. I live across the road, the house opposite yours,” the girl replied, waving her hand at the cream-colored house surrounded by red hibiscuses. “Let me help you,” the girl said and before Shantel could decline, she carried the suitcases and began to trudge towards the house. Shantel blinked, wondering why the girl felt so comfortable around her. “Are they always that nice?” she muttered to herself. When she got no answer to her rhetorical question, she grabbed the remaining suitcase, shut the trunk of the car, and ambled into the tall, beige building, which seemed to have lasted for years. Shantel couldn’t tell what awaited her, but all she could tell was that she was ready for every thing, including making new friends and letting her past go. But firstly, she needed to know what her mom was muttering about concerning her new college. She didn’t make out much from the muttering, but she was sure she heard her mom say words that made her heart sink. “Tomorrow, Shantel will resume studies at Silver-line University.”
