When I got home, Frank Gold was sitting on the couch like he'd been waiting for me for a long time. He sighed.
"I'll cut ties with Lily Jones. Don't be mad anymore."
He pulled me into bed and held me like he always did.
I couldn't sleep. I secretly checked his phone.
Back then, I never checked because my trust was complete.
His Telegram was still pinned to that same profile.
Goddess Lily.
I glanced at the latest messages, and my throat felt stuffed with cotton.
Right before we'd been intimate, she'd messaged him:
Lily: Made Gwen mad? Gotta work hard to smooth things over tonight?
Frank: Just going through the motions. After all these years, I've never been interested in anyone but you.
I turned off the phone. I didn't want to see anymore.
I remembered the first time Frank and I were together—he'd been lackluster and awkward.
Back then, Frank explained to me:
"I'm just cold by nature. Not very enthusiastic about these things. Don't take it personally."
Three years. So he'd been that dissatisfied with me all along.
The next morning, laughter and chatter from Frank Gold and Lily Jones drifted in from the living room.
I froze.
I saw a huge suitcase in the living room. The decorative pieces I'd placed on the couch had been dumped into a cardboard box.
Scattered across the sofa were clothes and handbags, many still with tags attached.
Lily Jones was wearing a silk nightgown, spinning around in front of Frank Gold.
When Frank Gold caught a glimpse of me, he deliberately avoided my gaze, looking guilty.
Lily Jones turned around, her smile widening.
"Gwen, I've been feeling unwell lately. Frank said I could stay here for a few days so he can take care of me. You don't mind, do you?"
Lily Jones was arrogant.
As if she were the real wife.
She was covered in designer labels—clearly all from Frank Gold's wallet.
I forced a smile that looked uglier than a cry.
"I saw your chat logs last night. I already talked to him about it. So since you know I'd mind, and you know he's a married man, why are you moving into my home anyway?"
Lily Jones's brief shock vanished.
Soon, she crossed her arms and sneered.
"We're not what you think. We did have regrets in the past, but now we're just friends. I'm raising a kid on my own. I don't have many friends. He's just helping me out for a few days."
I nodded.
"Friends need to live together? Just friends, and he'd leave me alone in the middle of the night to go pick you up?"
Lily Jones's face turned red.
"Don't be like this. You're making me feel so awkward."
I smiled.
"You brought your luggage and your kid into my house. Wasn't that awkward?"
We were at a standoff.
Frank Gold stepped in front of her, his eyes blazing with anger.
"Gwen Nance, why do you keep picking on Lily? She's really struggling right now. Can't you show a little understanding? Can't we talk about this in private?"
He was holding Lily's hand.
They looked more like a couple.
As if I were the outsider.
"What good does talking in private do? You made me a promise last night and broke it today."
Lily Jones yanked her hand away from him.
Behind him, she found her voice.
"Frank Gold! I've told you no so many times! Gwen Nance obviously doesn't want me here! Why do you have to make me uncomfortable by moving in?"
With that, she turned to leave.
Frank Gold rushed after her.
I stood there, feeling like a fool.
I bit my lip, gathered my things, and went to the office.
As I passed Frank Gold, he didn't even bother to look at me.
The man who, three years ago, had eyes only for me—he died a long time ago.
