MEMORY’S EDGE

1538 Words
It’s been two days since I last saw Ethan, and I'm worried about him. I don't want anything bad to happen to him, nor do I want the police to become suspicious about Ethan and me. But I really want to go visit him just to know about his whereabouts. So, one night, I decided to go look for him. There was a long police tape that was taped onto the forest trees, it read; “Do not cross.” I knew I had to stay alert for any police or search crews. I had walked almost a mile and a half from my original post when I noticed a nearby bush shaking violently. I got scared but reassured myself that it could be Ethan. “Ethan?” I called out his name. There was an abrupt stop in the sound. A hare came up to reveal itself. “Ohh,” I sighed. “Ethan should be around here somewhere.” “Ethan…where are you.” I continued. An hour had passed, and still no Ethan. I began to get anxious, began to insinuate the worst. I didn’t let that stop me; I kept looking. But no Ethan. “Where could he be?” I thought. After 5 hours passed, I gave up. I got tired and exhausted. “Where are you, Ethan?” A second thought arose in me, why would I give up on Ethan when Ethan has never given up on me? “No-I need to keep looking.” I thought. Anger, love, and the memories I had with him fueled and drove me to go look for him. After about 9 hours of intense searching, I collapsed from exhaustion…… Sad and confused, I went back home to clear my head. I got seriously worried for him. I was already on my way to school when I saw a bunch of police cops heading towards my direction. I thought they were going to stop by to interrogate me as usual, but this time, it was the opposite. It was a little frightening, but I didn't let that stop me. So when I got to school, I sighted my friends from afar, so I decided to go meet them and tell them about Ethan. "Hey guys," I waved at them frantically. "Ohh hey Emily." Sarah said, going to hug me, the rest followed. "Emily, how are you?" "I hope you're fine now." "Yeah I'm good, I just got a little problem," I said. "Ohh Emily, what is it?" "I can't find Ethan, somehow he disappeared, and now I can't find him- where could he be?.....I just hope he is okay?" I said with a concern etched on my face. "Hey Emily, everything's gonna be fine, we're going to find Ethan." "Thanks guys, you guys are the best," I hugged them. Emily had been searching for Ethan for months, scouring the woods, calling out his name, and asking around, but every lead ended in disappointment. As the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, Emily's hope began to dwindle. She couldn't shake the feeling that Ethan was gone, lost forever in the vast wilderness. Despite her doubts, Emily refused to give up. She continued to search, driven by the memories of their time together. She remembered the way Ethan smiled, the way he laughed, and the way he held her hand. Those memories kept her going, even when all seemed lost. It had been almost a year since Ethan went missing. Emily had almost given up on hope; she had searched everywhere. But Ethan was nowhere to be found. So every day, she would go to the forest, wear a white dress, and bring flowers in remembrance of him. Today, Emily decided to put flowers in the forest in memory of Ethan; she really missed him and assumed the worst could have happened to him. "Ethan," she said, sobbing and crying while she dropped a bunch of flowers on the ground, next to a stump. She sat there and began reminiscing about the memories Emily and Ethan once had together. She sat there for minutes when Emily stumbled upon a strange noise coming from a nearby bush. She approached cautiously, wondering if it might be a wild animal. As she drew closer, she saw a human hand, dirty and bruised, clutching at the underbrush. "Ethan?" She said excitedly, then she realized something was wrong. Her heart skipped a beat as she realized it might be Ethan. As she rushed closer, her eyes met a figure that made her blood run cold; it was Ethan, but not as she knew him. His eyes were wild, he had grown taller than he was before, his hair was matted, his skin was pale, he looked more like a beast than a human being. Emily's heart sank as she realized Ethan was gone, replaced by a feral creature that didn't recognize her. He growled at her, revealing his long, dark teeth, and approached her, which shocked Emily, but she wasn't afraid. "Ethan, Ethan, hey, you don't remember me?" Her eyes widened in fear. "Ethan, please don't do this, Ethan, it's me—Ethan... Oh no, look at you." "Please, Ethan, don't do this, it's me." Ethan lunged at her, his eyes flashing with feral intensity. Emily screamed; "Ahhhhhhh!" Ethan tried to defend himself, but he was too strong. He pinned her to the ground, his teeth bared in a snarl. In that moment, Emily realized that she might never reach the Ethan she loved again. Somehow, Emily managed to break free and scramble to safety. As she stumbled back into the woods, she couldn’t shake the image of Ethan’s wild eyes and tattered skin. She felt a mix of emotions: sadness, fear, and frustration. Why had Ethan become like this? What had happened to him? When she finally emerged from the woods, she called Ethan’s friends, whom she had gotten in touch with recently because of Ethan. She told them about his condition. They were shocked, concerned, and scared. They didn’t know how to help him or if it was even possible to reach him. "Hmm, okay Emily, just give us a few minutes, we'll be right there," Alex said. "Alright, please bring a tranquilizer so we can knock him out to find out what really happened to him," she responded, feeling optimistic about Ethan’s wellness. "Okay, Emily," he replied. As Emily looked back at the woods, she wondered what the future held for Ethan. Would he ever regain his memory? Would he ever be the man she loved again? The uncertainty was overwhelming, but Emily knew she had to hold onto hope. Although she was glad to finally meet him after all these months without him, she knew they had a long way to go. With the help of Ethan's friends, they were able to sedate him and take him to a safe location. Emily was determined to help Ethan recover, to find out what had happened to him, and to bring him back to his normal self. The journey would be tough, but she was ready to face it head-on, for Ethan's sake and for theirs. As they worked to care for Ethan, Emily couldn't help but think about the possibilities. Would they be able to reverse the effects that had turned him into a feral creature? Or would Ethan be stuck in this state forever? The questions swirled in her mind, but she pushed them aside, focusing on the present moment. For now, she just wanted to be with Ethan, to hold him, and to let him know that she cared. Even if he couldn't recognize her, she knew that deep down, he was still the same person she loved. And with that thought, she held onto hope, no matter how fragile it seemed. The days turned into weeks, and the weeks turned into months. Ethan's friends and Emily worked tirelessly to help him recover. They tried various treatments, therapies, and approaches, but progress was slow. There were moments of breakthrough, where Ethan would seem to recognize Emily or respond to his name, but they were fleeting. Despite the challenges, Emily refused to give up. She spent hours with Ethan, talking to him, holding his hand, and trying to reach him. And slowly but surely, she began to notice subtle changes. Ethan's eyes would focus on her for longer periods, and his movements became more controlled. It was a small spark of hope, but it was enough to keep Emily going. She knew that she had to be patient, that healing would take time. And as she looked into Ethan's eyes, she saw a glimmer of recognition, a hint that he might be coming back to her. But just as things were starting to look up, a new challenge emerged. The authorities began to investigate Ethan's disappearance and the strange occurrences in the woods. They wanted to know what had happened to him, and why he had turned into a feral creature. Emily knew that she had to be careful, that she couldn't reveal the truth about Ethan's condition. And so, she found herself caught between her love for Ethan and her duty to protect him...
