The lawyer’s office was all glass and silence. Sign here, the lawyer said, sliding papers across the table. And here. Adrian didn’t look at them. He was watching Lila. Lila read the first line: Addendum to Engagement Contract: For PR purposes, both parties agree to increase public displays of affection. Her face went hot. Increase? The board loved the photos, the lawyer said smoothly. Investors want to see commitment. So more hand holding, Lila said. More... dancing. And kissing, Adrian said flatly. Lila choked. Excuse me? Page 3, the lawyer said. Section 4b. Occasional affection to maintain believability. Adrian picked up the pen. Signed. Without blinking. Lila stared at him. You didn’t even read it. I read it last night. And you’re okay with kissing me? For PR? His eyes met hers. Dark. Tired. I’m okay with whatever keeps my company safe. Lila signed too. Her hand shook. Outside, Adrian walked ahead. Fast. Wait, Lila called. He stopped. Didn’t turn. What? Was that the only reason you signed? The company? Adrian finally turned. Jaw tight. No. Lila blinked. Then what? I don’t know, he snapped. That’s the problem. A photographer popped out from behind a car. Flash. Adrian moved instantly. One arm around Lila’s waist, the other tilting her chin up. And he kissed her. Not soft. Not fake. His mouth was firm, desperate, like he’d been holding it in for weeks. Lila gasped into it and for a second she forgot about contracts and cameras and Eleanor. The camera flashed again. Adrian pulled back first. Breathing hard. There, he said, voice rough. Believable enough for you? He walked to the car. Lila stood there, lips still tingling, heart pounding. The lawyer was grinning. Perfect. That’ll go viral by tonight. Lila touched her mouth. Yeah. It would. To Be Continued
