Annika's POV
I did not know what I was going to hear from Ares. My heart pounds fast as I swipe to pick the call.
Sloane stood still and quiet with me, with assuring eyes that make me feel calmer every time I look at her.
“Where are you?” Ares sultry voice, calmer than usual and gentle on my ear. “You know you can not leave anyhow, you're not built for the harshness of being outside all by yourself. My men have gone out to search for you and they could not find you. I thought you had been kidnapped.”
I couldn't be fooled by his acts of being concerned. Listening to him speak like he cares for me made me more furious at how someone could pretend that much because he wants to get back at someone else. I know I did not deserve it.
“You know what, send me your location, I will come get you myself.”
“I want a divorce.”
“You want what?”
“You heard me. I want a divorce! You are inhumane. You will never see me again.”
Ares burst into laughter. “You? Do you know what it takes to get divorced? Which lawyer will you use? Who else do you know? I will not sign any paper that I don't feel like signing until I am ready. You don't get to make that call for me.” He scoffs. “I know for sure that you're not in your fathers house, I wonder where you are. Or, you're having an external relationship so you've absconded now that you have access to more money than you nor your greedy father could ever have?” His joy makes me mad. I could not stand it.
“You know that I have nothing to do with your money.” I know what he is playing at but I hate the fact that he would even think to push a story like that to my face knowing fully well that it was because of what I heard transpiring between him and my dad that I left home.
“But don't you buy what I said? the story will be sweeter to the ears of bloggers that way.” His calm voice is my sign that he probably has back up plans aside from his initial plans to ruin my life.
“Send your location to me. I'm responsible for you as your husband, so let me do my job. I don't like my items to be out of my reach.” His voice was firmer.
I didn't know what I did wrong to deserve a life like this. I thought Ares promiscuity was just him testing me to know if I'm still going to be submissive to him or not. I have been diligent because I wanted him to know that I loved him as a person and not because of how much he had accumulated to himself.
“What do you want from me?” The weight of pain that I felt hung on my voice box, making it hard for me to speak.
“Nothing too much, just bear the consequences of your father's sin. You know, I was beginning to like you. Your gentle, scared looks, your obedience, your ability to cook and clean. You make my ego feel good. I might as well keep you forever under my terms.”
His definition of me made me feel like I'm a weakling. It's crazy that I am still in love with him. I don't know if there's ever an explanation of the level of pain I feel.
“You don't own me and you will never get the chance to anymore. I'm leaving you for good. You will surely hear from my lawyer.” I put the phone away from me towards Sloane to help me end the call and she did without hesitating.
“I need to go and see my dad. Do you think you can drive me to his house?” I put my legs into my boots as I put them on.
“Sure, I can.” Her voice hit me as if she wasn't sure if she wanted to help me to get there or not.
I turn to her, “is there something you want to say to me? It's fine if you don't want to drive me there.”
“It's never that. I'd drive you there. I just feel a lot is happening in your life at the same time. I don't think you have given yourself the time to process your thoughts properly and know what to do next.” Her eyes gleaned like she could feel the heat of the pains that flowed through my veins.
“I'm going to be fine. I don't know how but I think I might be. I mean, if I wasn't going to be, you would not be here helping me from the moment I genuinely needed help.”
Sloane’s face lit up after that. “Let's get to your dad's then.”
“You will need some new dress, let me get you something that will fit.”
“No, I'm fine like this.”
Her eyes were rolling round like she wasn't going to listen to me. “Trust me, you're not fine like this.”
She hands a short green dress to me. Green was a little out of my comfort for a colour but It was really a beautiful one.
“Wouldn't this be short for me?” I can see myself looking like a high school girl that's in search of a boyfriend in it. “You know I'm going to meet my dad. I need to look like the state of my problems.”
“Trust me, you already look like it. It's written in your eyes. Your father doesn't need to look at your outfit to be able to recognise that.”
“You think highly of my father.”
I put on the dress and hung a jacket over it, then we headed out.
Sloane drives like she's in charge of the road and she makes fun of many things. She was really a person that was alive in her world. I wish I had met her when I was happy. Or when I thought I was happier.
In no time we arrived at my dad's place. He had many cars in his apartment like there was a party going on that I knew nothing about.
