CHAPTER 5: THE REVELATION Judith's POV I couldn't sleep that night in Solomon's guest room. Every time I closed my eyes I saw Sandra's calculated smile in that video and wondered how I could have been so blind. By morning I had made a decision, I was going to confront Sandra and demand the truth about everything, even if it was dangerous. Solomon tried to talk me out of it over breakfast. "Judith, if Sandra is working with Benjamin then confronting her could put you at risk." "I need to hear her say it," I insisted. "I need to look her in the eyes and hear her admit that our entire friendship was a lie." "Then I'm coming with you," Solomon said firmly. We drove to Sandra's apartment and I knocked on the door, my heart pounding as I heard footsteps approaching. Sandra opened the door and her eyes widened when she saw me. "Judith, what are you doing here?" "We need to talk," I said, pushing past her into the apartment. "And this time I want the truth." Solomon followed me inside and Sandra's expression changed from surprise to calculation. "I don't know what you think you know," Sandra said carefully. "I know you've been working with Benjamin," I said, pulling out my phone and showing her the security footage. "I know you took money from his lawyer, I know everything was planned." Sandra's mask finally dropped and she laughed, a cold sound that made my skin crawl. "You really are as stupid as Benjamin said you were." The words hit me like a physical blow but I refused to let her see how much they hurt. "Why?" I asked. "Why did you do this to me?" "Because rich girls like you have everything handed to them," Sandra said bitterly. "Perfect families, trust funds, opportunities, while people like me have to fight for every scrap." "So you decided to destroy my life?" I asked incredulously. "I decided to take what should have been mine," Sandra corrected. "Benjamin and I have been planning this for three years, from the moment he decided to marry you for your money." I felt like I couldn't breathe. "What are you talking about?" "Benjamin never loved you," Sandra said cruelly. "He researched your family, found out about your trust fund, and asked me to befriend you in college so he could get close to you." "That's impossible," I whispered. "We met by chance at a charity event." Sandra laughed again. "A charity event I made sure you'd attend after months of carefully building our friendship, every moment of your relationship with Benjamin was orchestrated by us." Solomon stepped forward. "Where's the rest of Judith's money? The twelve million that disappeared from her account?" Sandra's eyes flickered with something that might have been fear. "I don't know what you're talking about." "Yes, you do," Solomon said coldly. "And if you don't tell us right now, I'll make sure the police add conspiracy and fraud to the charges Benjamin is already facing, which means you'll go to prison too and lose custody of Brielle." At the mention of her daughter, Sandra's composure cracked. "Fine, Benjamin moved the money to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands, but I don't have access to it, he never trusted me with the account numbers." "Why would he move it if the research center money was enough?" I asked. "Because Benjamin's gambling debts are bigger than you know," Sandra said. "He owes dangerous people millions of dollars and he's been using your money to pay them off while pretending the research center is profitable." The pieces finally clicked into place, the strange phone calls Benjamin would take in private, the unexplained trips, the way he always seemed stressed about money despite his successful medical practice. "How much does he owe?" Solomon asked. "Last I heard, about fifteen million," Sandra admitted. "And if he doesn't pay soon, those people will come after him." "Let them," I said coldly, but Solomon grabbed my arm. "Judith, if Benjamin owes money to organized crime, they might come after you too," Solomon said seriously. "You're still legally his wife, which makes you liable for his debts in their eyes." Fear washed over me. "What am I supposed to do?" Before anyone could answer, Sandra's phone rang and her face went white when she looked at the screen. "It's Benjamin," she said, her voice shaking. "He knows you're here." "How?" I demanded. "I have a tracking app on my phone that he monitors," Sandra admitted. "He's going to know I told you everything." The door to the apartment suddenly burst open and three large men in dark suits walked in, their expressions cold and professional in a way that made it clear they weren't police. "Which one of you is Judith Crawford?" the tallest man asked. I felt Solomon move protectively in front of me. "Who are you?" "We work for some associates of Dr. Crawford," the man said. "And we've been asked to deliver a message to his wife." "I'm getting a divorce," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "I'm not responsible for Benjamin's debts." "That's not how our employer sees it," the man replied. "Dr. Crawford borrowed fifteen million dollars using his wife's trust fund as collateral, which means Mrs. Crawford is now responsible for repayment." "That's not legally binding," Solomon said firmly. "Whatever agreement Benjamin made was without his wife's knowledge or consent." The man smiled coldly. "We don't care about legal technicalities, we care about getting our money back, Mrs. Crawford has seventy-two hours to produce fifteen million dollars or there will be consequences." "And if she doesn't have it?" Solomon asked. "Then she'll have to find another way to repay the debt," the man said, his eyes traveling over me in a way that made my skin crawl. "Our employer is always looking for creative solutions." The three men left as suddenly as they arrived, and I collapsed onto Sandra's couch, unable to process what had just happened. "They're going to kill me," I whispered. "Or worse." "No, they're not," Solomon said firmly, pulling out his phone. "I'm calling my lawyers and my security team, we're going to fix this." "How?" I asked desperately. "I don't have fifteen million dollars, Benjamin stole everything from me." "Then we'll get it back," Solomon said. "And if we can't do that in seventy-two hours, I'll pay the debt myself." I stared at him in shock. "You can't do that, it's too much money." "Judith, I'm a billionaire," Solomon said gently. "Fifteen million is a lot to you but it's manageable for me, I won't let these people hurt you." Sandra spoke up from where she'd been sitting silently. "There might be another way, Benjamin keeps records of all his financial transactions in a safe at his house, if you can get access to that safe, you might be able to find the account numbers for the offshore money." "Why are you helping now?" I asked suspiciously. "Because those men scare me more than prison does," Sandra admitted. "And because if they come after you, they might come after Brielle too, I may be a lot of things but I won't risk my daughter's safety." Solomon looked at me. "Do you know the combination to Benjamin's safe?" I shook my head but then remembered something. "But I know someone who might, Benjamin's secretary Mirabel mentioned once that she had to get documents from his home safe during a merger deal." "Your sister is Benjamin's secretary?" Solomon asked, confused. "No, different Mirabel," I said quickly. "Joy is his current secretary and she's been with him for five years, if anyone has access to that safe, it's her." "Then we need to talk to Joy," Solomon said. "Today." As we left Sandra's apartment, my phone buzzed with a text from Benjamin: I know what happened at Sandra's place, those men don't work for who they said they work for, they work for me, the clock is ticking, Judith, and when it runs out, you'll wish you'd never filed for divorce. My hands shook as I showed the text to Solomon, and I realized with horror that Benjamin had orchestrated everything, the threats, the men, probably even Sandra's confession, he was manipulating us all like pieces on a chess board. And I had no idea what his endgame was, but I knew with certainty that it would destroy me if I didn't figure out how to fight back.
