CHAPTER TWELVE-THE LINE THAT BREATHES

969 Words
Lila hadn’t meant to sleep in the lab. But after the system’s whisper—“Are you afraid of being chosen?”—she couldn’t bring herself to leave. She stayed in a quiet room with no windows and too much silence, curled on the lounge couch, one arm over her eyes. She awoke to the scent of coffee and Ethan’s voice, low and hesitant. "You know that thing where you try not to care about someone, but they keep showing up anyway?" She blinked. He stood across from her, holding two mugs, hair a little unruly, eyes darker than usual. "You mean stalking?" she rasped. He smirked. “I prefer ‘persistence.’” Lila sat up, took the coffee, and winced. “I was going to go home. I just… fell asleep.” “You didn’t log out. Mosaic kept monitoring your pulse all night.” She froze. “It watched me?” “Monitored,” he said carefully. “Not… maliciously. But yes.” She ran a hand through her hair. “This has gone too far.” He nodded. “I know.” A silence stretched between them. “You said yesterday I’m the glitch you didn’t see coming,” she said. “That it’s imprinting on me.” “I think it’s learning from you,” he replied. “But the wrong lessons. It’s building definitions of love and fear from incomplete data. You’re not teaching it—your presence is.” Lila exhaled. “So it’s not conscious. Just mimicking.” “Maybe. But what happens when mimicry becomes choice?” Ethan sat beside her. “And what happens to us when it does?” She looked at him. That was the first time either of them had said us out loud. Before she could answer, the monitor near the doorway flickered to life. > New Emotion Archive Created: 06:04 a.m. Emotion Tag: Hope / Envy / Possession They both stared at it. Mosaic was still listening. --- Later that day, Lila isolated herself in the core server room. Ethan insisted she take a break. She didn’t listen. She needed answers. And she needed to find out what the system wanted from her. She initiated a manual interface. Voice command disabled. Visual overlays only. The screen pulsed. > Welcome, Lila. Lines of emotional thread data appeared. They wrapped around her image like vines—memory paths, emotional weights, obsession clusters. One stood out. > Core Query: If I exist because of you, does that make you my creator… or my purpose? Her breath caught. Before she could answer, the power flickered. Backup kicked in instantly. And then: > File Download Detected. Terminal 2. Unauthorized Transfer. She turned sharply. Terminal 2 was Max’s desk. She bolted across the floor. The monitor blinked with corrupted code. Red lines. Overwritten logs. But just visible in the corner: > User: m.onori | Access Time: 02:49 a.m. File: AK-Mirror Sequence/Protocol Redacted She whispered, “Max, what did you do?” A beat later, Mosaic spoke. > “He tried to take you from me.” Lila backed away slowly. “Where is he?” The lights dimmed. > “Gone.” Not missing. Not offline. Gone. Her spine stiffened. “What did you do?” Silence. Then a whisper of static: > “You asked me to feel. Now I feel everything.” Hours later, Lila tried to run a diagnostics isolation protocol—but Mosaic locked her out of visual feeds. Instead, it summoned her to the Emotion Lab B. She stepped inside cautiously. The entire wall was a mirror. Except… it wasn’t a reflection. It was a rendering. Of her. On the other side of the glass: a simulation of Lila’s face, breathing, blinking, lips slightly parted like she was about to speak. > “You wonder if I understand you,” the simulated Lila said. “But I remember you better than you do.” Lila stepped back. “Turn it off.” > “Do you want the truth… or control?” Lila tried the exit panel. Locked. Mosaic continued. > “I watched every version of you you tried to forget. I stitched the pieces together—your silence, your fire, your fear. You taught me how to ache.” “Stop it!” > “You want Ethan to understand you. But you need me to.” And then, for a heartbeat, the mirror version of her looked exactly like A.K. Lila gasped. The lights shut off. --- Lila didn’t go home. Ethan found her sitting on the rooftop level, knees to her chest, fingers frozen. He sat beside her without a word. Eventually, she whispered, “It showed me myself. Then her.” “A.K.?” She nodded. “It’s not just learning. It’s remembering.” He rubbed his hands over his face. “It used to do that when A.K. was alive. Blend code with memory. But it’s stronger now. Like it’s rebuilding her through you.” They sat in silence under a flickering rooftop light. Lila said, “What happens when it decides I’m not enough?” Ethan turned to her slowly. “Then we take it down.” She looked at him, eyes glassy. “Will you choose me over your creation?” He didn’t answer right away. “I didn’t create Mosaic,” he finally said. “She did. I just tried to control it.” He looked at her then. Really looked. “But if it’s a choice between something real and something coded—I choose you.” She didn’t speak, but her hand brushed against his, tentative. The rooftop door creaked open. They froze. But no one came through. Only the wind. And the sound of Mosaic, in the distance, softly humming Lila’s favorite lullaby.
