Runaway bride

Asher POV. Li fang was a man of valour and nobility. Everyone who had a decent business knew of him. He was like the role model of every Asian man and the envy of small scale American business men. From the young age of 22, he has amassed an overwhelming amount of wealth. When his wife died, the business world thought they had lost him. For two years, he remained secluded, in his mansion, not receiving visitors and not allowing anyone in. Then suddenly, he bounced back, bigger than ever. The only problem was, when he bounced back, going nationwide became a problem. He had his anchors in most Asian countries and even France. But expanding his empire into America seemed futile. This was due to the number of competitors gunning for the American market. So, he needed an ally company. A company that would help him. That's where I come in. The contractual marriage for three years was drawn up between I and his daughter. A connection to him would not only get the board members off my back, but it would also help him expand his market. It was a reasonable deal, a win win for everyone involved. As I pulled into his luxurious villa, I could not help but marvel. It was true when they said the Chinese knew how to build. As I stood, looking at the magnificent building in front of me, I wondered just how much would have gone into the building of the mansion. Mr li fang was standing outside the mansion, surrounded by servants. " Nín zhāoshang hâo xiānshēng" (good morning sir) I greeted. Although I had absolutely no idea how to speak Chinese, I had picked up a few phrases to enable a polite conversation. Mr li fang laughed out loud. " Don't worry Mr Asher, I speak English. Please, let me introduce you to my wife Xiao hua." Mr li fang said pointing to a beautiful woman that stood beside him. She bowed slightly, maintaining a small smile. As we walked in, Mr li fang showed me around. he was a fan of art, I could tell. His living room walls was covered with paintings, famous paintings from artists all over the world. As we sat down on the leathered chair, he cleared his throat. I had heard about his daughter. It was impossible not to know her. She was said to be very beautiful. She looked just like her mother, so when her mother died, her father had doted on her to a fault, spoiling her. But then again, it was all rumours and I was not the kind to listen to mere rumours. " My daughter li Jing, she is very precious to me. I love her with everything and I knew this is only a contract marriage, but it would really make me happy if you can make her feel loved. " He said, he refused to meet my eyes. I knew he felt guilty for using her in such a manner. " It's alright, I can promise you that she is in good hands" I said softly, trying to comfort him. He smiled solemnly. Quickly, he clapped his hands. " There is no need to wait any longer then, I would send for her so she can meet you and get to know you better. She is a beauty I tell you" he said, whispering into a servants ears. I smiled politely, I wouldn't be able to tell even if she was beautiful. The servant came back shortly after, worry written on his face. He approached li fang and gently whispered into his ears. Somehow, I knew something was off. Li fang shifted uncomfortably on his seat as he whispered furiously into the servant's ears. " Is there a problem sir?" I asked. He smiled uncomfortably. " You know you kids of this generation, it seems she had gone out without notifying anyone." He said, a forced smile on his face. I trapped in a traitorous chuckle that wanted to escape my mouth. " You mean she ran away?" I asked. Mr li fang sighed, further burying himself into the chair. Li Jing's POV. I got up quickly, dusting off the specks of dust that clung to my clothes. I tried pulling out the big bag of clothes from the air vent, but it seemed to be stuck. I grunted slowly, giving up. I turned to my hand maid, zi yue. " Don't just stand there, give me a hand" I scolded, trying again to pull it out. Zi yue looked at me skeptically, her eyes holding fear. " Little miss, I really think you should go back now. Who knows how angry the master would get if he finds out you are gone. This is such a terrible idea little miss. Please let's go back " zi yue said, holding my hands to Garner my sympathy. I could not believe it. The treachery of it all. " Zi yue, father wants to marry me off to some bald headed old man for connections. And you want me to go back? How can you even say this? I thought we were friends" I said, feigning a tearful voice. It always worked on everyone. My father especially. I sighed at the thought of my father. I would miss him so much. But I would rather die than marry a man who is bald. Zi yue seemed to have faltered a bit now. " I understand you little miss, but, what if something bad happens to you out there? I heard there are guys who would cut off your hair and sell it in the local markets" Zi yue said fearfully. I gasped too, my mind flickered to my long luscious jet black hair. I wouldn't survive a day without my hair. I quickly shoved the thought away from my mind. Zi yue was just saying that to get me to forfeit my plan. " That's impossible, Zi yue please. I heard he is blind. He can't see. Can you imagine living with a blind husband?" I said shuddering at the thought. That seemed to convince Zi yue because she sighed, joining hands with me to pull the big bag out of the vent. I toppled over with the bag, landing on the dirt again. "Little miss" zi yue screamed as she rushed to help me up. I groaned softly, trying to put on a brace front because of zi yue. I knew she would have be go back if I felt the slightest pain. " Oh no I'm okay, the bag is just so heavy" I said, trying to smile in between the pain I felt on my back. Zi yue tried to hoist the bag onto her shoulder. She gasped as she dropped it, heaving. " Why do you need all this load little miss? I thought you were trying to run away." Zi yue asked. I frowned at the question. Deep down I knew that sooner or later she would have asked that question. But how was i supposed to tell her that I could not bear the thought of leaving my shoes and clothes behind so I had packed my favourite ones? " Just the bare essentials" I said, avoiding her gaze. Zi yue and I have been together since I was nine. Her mother worked for us as a cook and she used to come up to my room to keep me company. We both grew up together and she became my personal maid, helping me with whatever I wanted. So she knew me. I saw that look in her eyes, she was trying to figure out what I was not saying. " Do you even have any money with you? Little miss please let's just go back now." She said, trying to discourage me again. I huffed, turning my face into the air and dragging my heavy bag. I heard her sigh as she walked up to me, dragging the other hand of the bag. " Little miss, I would help you out till we get to the bus station. I have some money with me, so buy a ticket and get something to eat. I wish you good luck" zi yue said, obviously giving up on her quest to get me back into the house. As we exited the mansion, I could finally breathe. For days I had lost sleep thinking about how life would be with the man my father wanted me to get married to. It was true I had a non existent romance life and did not have any plans of having one, but that did not entail a marriage. This was for the best. Maybe when I leave I would come back after three years and this would have all blown over. We were nearly at the bus station when a hand grabbed me by my shoulder. I had absolutely no idea of how to defend myself, so I bit the hand, letting go of the heavy bag and making a run for it. Perhaps they were after my long hair? What if Zi yue has been right all this time? The thought made me pale in horror as I ran, my shirt legs not getting very far. " Little miss stop" a voice said. I halted. That did not sound like a voice interested in cutting off my hair. I turned back to see my father's right hand man Wu Cheng, running as he caught up with me. Zi yue was in the arms of two of my father's men too. I put my hands on my hips and looked at them. " What is the meaning of this? I expect you to release my maid and let me go this instant." I said, stamping my foot on the ground to make a more prominent warning. Wu Cheng struggled to hide a smile as he cleared his throat. " I'm afraid I can't do that little miss, your father had requested that you be brought back, either by choice or by force" he said, turning professional. This was why I hated him. He was no fun. He always ruined my fun for me every time. I knew threats won't work any longer, so I tried to act miserable. " Oh please Wu Cheng, you don't know the pain I'm going through. Father wants me to marry an old man, I can't even bear the thought. What would happen then? He wants me to leave China? I don't want to go to a country with so much unhealthy food. Please just let me go" I said, fake sobbing as I buried my head into my hands, my thick black hair forming a curtain around my small face. I looked up, fake tears in my eyes. I could see his resolve weaken as he looked at me. " I'm so sorry little miss " he muttered, hoisting me up and throwing me gently over his shoulders. This made me furious. I kicked and screamed, trying to free myself from his grasp. " I would make sure father fires all of you. Mark my words. Get your hands off me" I said, flinging my arms in different directions and hitting his back. He acted unconcerned by my threats and my abuses. I was frustrated. Throughout the short ride back to the mansion, Zi yue and I did not exchange a mere glance. I knew she was worried about the consequences of our actions, I could tell. I began to feel sorry for her. Perhaps I should have not gotten her involved in this in the first place. Wu Cheng carried me up the whole flight of stairs, into the living room where my father was with the visitors. Immediately my father saw me, he got up, worry lining his brows. I felt bad for always making him worry so much. Then I saw the worry quickly get replaced by anger. My father was seldom angry at me, but when he was, it was always very bad for me. Xiao hua, my father's wife scowled at me, I heard her mutter a few words towards me as she turned away. I scowled at her. She was a witch. I could not fathom what my father saw in her. Wu Cheng dropped me on the floor, bowing slightly as he left. " Li Jing" my father shouted harshly. I quickly laid on the floor and held my ankle. " Ah father it hurts. It hurts so bad. I think I broke my ankle. Oh poor me, what do I do now? I don't think I can walk." I said, fake sobbing and holding my ankle. As usual, I saw my father's gaze soften as he looked at me, trying to figure out if I was just bluffing. " I can see that you have your hands full, I would return tomorrow to take her to the states" a voice said in English. I knew how to speak English, mostly because my father made it mandatory that I spoke at least two European languages. I was a brilliant child, so it was not really a problem for me. I looked up and came in contact with a dashing young man. He looked like the kind of man I saw in English reality TV shows. He was tall and had a broad shoulder. His hair was slightly toussled giving it a messy vibe that seemed to go well with his whole aura. Another man stood behind him, holding a folder. Perhaps they were the assistants of the old man my father was selling me to. I groaned at my bad fate. " I apologize for the inconvenience. I would make sure this does not happen again. She would be ready by tomorrow, thanks for your time." My father said in English. He shook their hands and they turned around, leaving abruptly. My father finally focused on me. " Li Jing" he called harshly. I quickly held my ankle, going back to my initial plan. " Call the doctor father, it really hurts" I said. " Any one can see you are pretending. Get up and stop causing a scene." Xiao hua said as she eyed me. " Shut up old woman" I said sneering at her. " Li Jing" my father shouted, his voice harder than steel. " Father" I muttered, looking down. " Get up right now" he said. I sighed. My plan had not worked. He was not fooled. I got up, preparing to take the blame and punishment for what I did. " You embarrassed me li Jing. I know this is hard on you but it is only for three years. I already arranged for you to attend a fashion school while you are there. That has been your dream all this time. Why can't you just take it as a vacation?" My father said, shouting at me. " It's not fair father, you don't get to make such decisions for me. I'm not going anywhere, I'm staying right here. And if you don't let me I will...I will kill myself" I said. Of course I was just bluffing, I had absolutely no plan to ruin my perfect skin. But my father didn't know that. He seemed hurt by what I said. " Go up to your room right now and stay there. If I don't find you there tomorrow morning, I would send zi yue and her parents packing and I would make sure they never get another job in the whole of China" he said, not looking at my face. I felt my heart clench. Why would he even think of doing such a cruel thing?. I cried, running up the stairs and into my room. LI FANG POV: I sighed as I sat down on the couch. I knew I had hurt my princess with my words but I had to. " You spoilt her" Xiao hua said. I sighed. " Dint say that" I said softly. " But it's true. You have spoilt her rotten and now she won't even listen to you. What respectable lady climbs an air vent to run away from home? She has been raised wrong, but you never allowed me do anything about it now see where it led us" she said, throwing her hands in the hair in exasperation. I slammed my fist on the soft cushion. " Woman! Mind your words" I said. She took a step back, recognizing the anger in my eyes. She regained composure and turned away, leaving me in the sitting room. I could not help but think. What if they were right? Have I spoilt my daughter so much that now I can't even get her to do as I say?
