8.Back in the privacy of my cubicle at our co-apt in the Haight on Level One, I attached the throat and ear dots that had belonged to the pilot, Janos Mirlav. I activated both. “Hello, Kay?” I asked tentatively. A voice answered. “Yes; who is this?” The voice was obviously female but it had a faraway, slightly hollow reverberation, as if it were an echo from the far end of a long, narrow, metallic tunnel. I briefly explained who I was and passed on the message from the pilot, keeping my tone as neutral as possible. Still, my chest was tight with my own grief.
