9. Oakland S & L, On the Bus Waiting, LA Greyhound Station—Man, we both dearly loved riding the dog. The pure exhilaration of going somewhere. Anywhere. Away from day-to-day, mind-numbing reality. A sense we shared with a lot of poor folk back in Oakland. Funny, I never thought about my Huntington’s or any of my other troubles while riding. Time stood completely still, all the hassle and pain left behind, inside so nice and quiet, everything smoothly rolling by out there like a travel documentary for Leroy. And that feeling at night hurtling along the freeways in the dark, the sense of total freedom, at least as free as anyone like me could hope to experience in this country.
