“This is standard operating procedure for everyone whenever leaving camp,” Leroy said, pointing at a pair of wide cabinets on a bench across from the books. He selected what looked like a highway-worker jumpsuit, minus the orange vest, from the freshly laundered stack in one cabinet. “You always need to bundle up, including wearing a roll-down cap and face mask.” He selected a black ski cap from a pile next to the jumpsuits, and a particle face mask from an opened box in the other cabinet. “Even though we haven’t been exposed directly to radiation,” he explained, “we can still become sick from inhaling contaminated dust or ashes we stir up. We strip off this stuff as soon as we get back and scrub off at the first bucket-showers down at the lake…” He paused as they pulled on their overalls.
