PAMELA'S POV
But right now, I had no one- and nothing terrified me more than being helpless.
I pulled, trying to free myself from his grip but it was an iron fist. My heart was racing and my mind was filled with thoughts of things they could do to me if I didn't escape.
“Come on now, don't be shy,” he began to pull me back into the alley.
All my emotions hit me at once. I felt everything: anger towards Darius, his betrayal with Serena, Elias’ rejection, Becca's frustration and hate towards me, the pack abandoning me.
I felt the blood rushing through my veins, and heard it roaring in my ears.
Heat tore through my chest, spreading through my limbs until it felt like fire was burning beneath my skin.
Goddess… I had never felt anything like this before.
“Let go!” I screamed in panic. I was dying. I was sure of it. This was what dying felt like.
A scream tore through my mouth, so primal I didn't think it came from me. My body shook violently and I fell on my knees. Only then did I realize that they'd let go of me and were watching me warily.
“What's happening to me?” I asked no one in particular. I screamed again, the world around me turning red and blurring all at the same time.
Something strange took over me. I could see what was happening but I had no control. I was growling and I was faster than I had ever been before.
Those men tried to run away, their screams followed me into the darkness and I blacked out, not seeing what had happened. When I came to again, they were on the floor in front of me, bleeding and injured.
I stumbled, falling as the world tilted and turned to black, claiming me in its cold embrace.
***
The first thing I heard was the sound of burning firewood. I could smell cinnamon and other spices. I blinked my eyes open, staring at a wooden ceiling.
I didn't remember how I'd gotten here. Where was it?
“Can you hear me?” A voice said from beside me. But, it sounded like it was coming from all around me, like my head was under water and I was still stuck there.
Glimpses of what had happened flashed through my mind. I remembered the three men who had cornered me into an alley. I remembered them screaming and trying to run away.
I remembered feeling anger towards them. But most of all, I remembered that feeling of power I had over them. It was scary.
Whatever I had become, it terrified me.
“I-I hurt those men,” I stuttered, in so much pain that I could barely keep my eyes open. I may have killed them but I wasn't sure.
“They were going to do you worse, darling. It's okay. Forget about it, you're safe now. I've got you,” the kind voice said, petting my hair.
She kept speaking to me in a soothing voice until I drifted into a restless sleep.
The next time I opened my eyes, it was morning or afternoon, I really couldn't tell. I sat up, inspecting my body for any injuries. Aside from the torn clothes on my body, I felt completely unharmed- which made no sense.
What had attacked those men and hurt them like that? Was it to protect me?
I looked around at the place I was in. It was a cozy cabin. I noticed a pot of stew cooking slowly on the stove. There was no one else here.
I heard the sound of wood snapping and walked outside. An older woman swung an axe over her head, Grey streaks ran through her long dark hair, braided neatly down her back. They were pulled into a braid down her back.
She noticed me and paused, a smile tugging on her face. Her light grey eyes crinkled when she saw me.
“You're awake,”
“Where am I?”
“Home. You're safe, if that's what you're wondering. We're somewhere in the mountains.” she replied.
Over breakfast, Nina told me everything that had happened. She'd seen me transform and attack those men. When I passed out, she took me to her cabin and cleaned me up.
After all these years… my wolf had finally awakened.
Nina made me stay for a few more days. She wanted to be sure I was okay.
Once I recovered, I returned to the bar, walking back to the cabin each night with Nina. I dreaded when I had to leave and be alone again. Nina was so kind to me. The night before I was supposed to leave, she asked to see me.
“You're leaving tomorrow,” she said in a questioning tone.
“Yeah,” I replied, quietly. I rubbed my arm.
“Do you want to stay here with me?”
I didn't realize when I started crying, wiping at the tears that wouldn't stop falling. Nina reached for me and pulled me into her arms, patting my back.
“It's okay. I know your life's been hard. I've got you,” she said, sweetly. “You can stay for as long as you want.”
I agreed to stay with her. I worked at the bar for a while. Somehow, Nina was always there to walk me back to the cabin in the woods, especially when I was on a night shift. Nina reminded me what it was like to have a mother.
It didn't take long for us to grow close. A few weeks later, I returned from work and saw someone leaving the cabin. Curious, I asked Nina who that was. As a rogue wolf, Nina lived alone and rarely received visitors.
“I have to leave the country, Pamela.” She had a look on her face that made my heart sink.
She took my hand in hers.
“I know that you don't know me and you don't fully trust me yet but, this is a good opportunity,” she said.
“Nina, you saved my life. I owe you my life,” I assured her. “You can go. Don't worry about me.”
Nina shook her head. “That's not what I'm saying. Leave everything behind. Let go of Pamela.”
“What are you saying, Nina?” I asked.
“Come with me.”
