The morning of the meeting arrived too fast.
Elara woke before dawn, her heart already racing. She lay in her loft bed, staring at the ceiling, the locket warm against her chest. Today she would face the vampire council alone. Today she would try to end a war.
She climbed down to find Kael and Lucian already awake. Neither looked like they'd slept.
"You don't have to do this," Kael said. His gold eyes were dark with worry.
"Yes I do."
"Elara”
"I know you want to protect me." She stepped closer to him. "But this is my choice. My fight. If I don't do this, they'll keep hunting me forever."
Kael's jaw tightened. "If anything happens"
"Nothing will happen." She reached up and touched his face. "I'll come back. I promise."
He leaned into her touch, his eyes closing for just a moment. When he opened them, something raw and vulnerable flickered there.
"You're the most stubborn human I've ever met."
"I know." She smiled. "That's why you love me."
He didn't deny it.
Lucian moved to her other side. He looked ancient and tired in the dim light, but his red eyes were warm when they met hers.
"I've waited twenty-two years to find you," he said. "Don't make me watch you die."
"Watch me live instead." She took his cold hand. "I'm not going to die today. I'm going to change everything."
He raised her hand to his lips and pressed a soft kiss to her knuckles.
"Come back to us," he murmured.
"I will."
The walk to the mountain took an hour.
Elara went alone, just as the council demanded. Kael and Lucian watched her go from the cabin door, their eyes burning into her back. She didn't turn around. If she turned around, she might not have the courage to keep walking.
The snow was deep and the air was biting cold. The mountain rose ahead of her, stark against the pale winter sky. At its summit, she could see dark figures waiting.
The vampire council.
She climbed.
Her lungs burned. Her legs ached. But she kept going, one foot in front of the other, the locket thumping against her chest with every heartbeat.
When she reached the top, she found them waiting in a circle. Twelve vampires, ancient and cold, their red eyes fixed on her like predators sizing up prey.
At the center stood the Council Leader the same figure she'd met in the valley. He was tall and gaunt, his skin like parchment stretched over bone.
"Peacekeeper," he said, his voice like gravel. "You came alone."
"I keep my promises." Elara stopped a few feet away. "Now keep yours. You said you'd listen."
"I said I'd hear you out. That's different from listening."
She felt a flash of anger. "Then why are we here?"
"Curiosity." He circled her slowly. "You're the first Peacekeeper in twenty-two years. The last one was your mother. She refused to give us her blood too."
"She died for that refusal."
"Yes." His eyes glittered. "So will you, if you're not careful."
Elara held her ground. "I didn't come here to be threatened. I came to offer a deal."
"What deal?"
She took a breath. "I'll give my blood willingly. To both sides. Not to break your curse not to give power to the wolves. To create peace. A real peace. A treaty that ends this war forever."
The council murmured among themselves. The Leader raised a hand for silence.
"Peace," he repeated. "After centuries of war, you think a drop of blood will fix everything?"
"No." She met his gaze. "I think love will fix everything. My blood is just the bridge."
"Love." He laughed cold and sharp. "You speak of love as if it's a weapon."
"It is." Her voice was steady. "It's the only weapon that can end a war without more death."
The council was silent.
Then the Leader spoke again. "You're brave. I'll give you that. Foolish, but brave."
"Does that mean you'll agree?"
"It means I'll consider it." He stepped closer. "But first, you have to prove you're serious."
"How?"
"Give me a taste of your blood. Now. A small amount. To show us it's real."
Elara's heart stuttered. She knew this was a trap. If she gave him even a drop, he might take more. But if she refused, she lost her only chance.
"One drop," she said. "And you let me walk away."
"Agreed."
She pulled a small knife from her pocket Lucian had given it to her, silver and sharp. She pressed it to her palm and sliced.
The blood welled up, dark and rich.
The Leader's eyes widened. He reached for her hand
And Kael erupted from the snow.
He wasn't alone. Lucian was beside him, moving faster than she'd ever seen, his red eyes blazing. And behind them came the wolves at least twenty of them, silver fur and gold eyes, howling as they charged.
Elara screamed. "NO! Don't fight”
But it was too late.
The vampires attacked. The wolves attacked. The mountain erupted into chaos.
Elara stumbled backward, clutching her bleeding palm, as Kael tore through the council members like they were paper. Lucian moved with deadly grace, fangs extended, taking down vampires twice his size.
"STOP!" Elara screamed again. "I said STOP!"
Her blood was dripping onto the snow. And something strange was happening.
Where the blood touched, the snow began to glow. A soft golden light, spreading outward, warming the frozen ground. The fighting slowed. The wolves and vampires looked down at the glowing snow, confused.
The light rose, wrapping around Elara like a cocoon. She felt something shift in her chest. A power she'd never known existed.
And then she spoke but it wasn't her voice alone. It was ancient, layered, like a hundred voices speaking as one.
"By my blood, I command peace. By my choice, this war ends. Lay down your weapons. Look at each other. See the enemy as a brother. See the monster as a man."
The golden light spread outward, touching every creature on the mountain.
The wolves stopped snarling. The vampires stopped fighting.
Kael looked at Lucian. Lucian looked at Kael.
For the first time in centuries, they didn't see an enemy.
They saw an ally.
The silence stretched.
Elara stood in the center of the circle, her palm still bleeding, the golden light slowly fading. She was shaking, exhausted, but she felt something new inside her. Something powerful. Something peaceful.
"Peace," she whispered. "It's possible."
The Council Leader stared at her. His ancient face was unreadable.
"Impossible," he breathed. "How did you”
"I chose." She met his gaze. "I chose peace. And my blood obeyed."
The Leader looked at the other vampires. Then at the wolves. Then back at Elara.
"Your mother would be proud," he said finally. "And your grandmother." He bowed his head, a gesture of deep respect. "Perhaps it's time for something new."
Elara exhaled. It was over. It was finally over.
Kael reached her first. He pulled her into his arms, holding her so tight she could barely breathe.
"Never do that again," he growled.
"I'll do whatever I want." But she was laughing, tears streaming down her face. "I'm a Peacekeeper. It's my job."
Lucian appeared beside them, his cold hand finding hers.
"You are extraordinary," he said softly. "I've lived four hundred years. I've never seen anything like you."
"Does that mean you'll stay?"
He smiled a real smile, warm and hopeful.
"For as long as you'll have me."
Elara looked between them. Kael's fierce gold eyes. Lucian's ancient red ones.
She was caught between two worlds.
But for the first time, she didn't have to choose.
