One day, Mrs. Deb's school was having a picnic in the park.
She was now a secretary of an oral deaf school.
When Eastern closed, Deb got a lot of treasures.
She got to have a cotton candy machine, a snow cone machine, and a popcorn machine.
She always brings the cotton candy machine cause the kids love it!
Who doesn't love cotton candy?
All was fine, I was feeling fine when out of nowhere I collapsed on the ground.
I don't remember doing it, but when I did, Deb told me to stay down because I was trying to stand up after I had just passed out.
This was the beginning of my summer.
I ate, drank, and even played.
I don't know how I fainted like that.
I didn't know what was wrong with me either.
Nobody could tell me.
It all started after I took the M.E.A.P TEST.
I was an advanced reader in elementary school, so I took the test earlier than most students.
There were other advanced reading kids too.
It was two minutes before the test was over.
Just when I finished I began to get a chill, like someone turned on the AC fully cranked, but the AC wasn't on at all.
I asked for a sweater and the teacher gladly gave me hers.
A few minutes after I took the sweater I began to sweat unconditionally.
I gave the sweater back to the teacher, thanking her for the sweater before going back to class.
When I returned I told the assistant teacher that I wasn't feeling good.
Few students made remarks. I just kept walking.
We told the nurse my condition and she took my temperature.
It came to a degree of 103.5.
she had called my mom, she came and took me home.
Jordan was home early too. He came down with the same thing but he lasted two weeks and he was good.
My sickness lasted for months.
At first, Deb wanted me upstairs in bed, away from everyone.
There were days when I felt fine, but even sometimes Deb made it uncomfortable for me.
Sometimes she made me feel like I was a disease.
She would yell at me for no reason all because I asked her a question.
Sometimes I felt I was being a leech to them.
All I knew I had dark spots all over me and a high fever.
Maybe I had chicken pox or something, cause when the nurse put some ointment on, they burned like crazy.
I thought it would get better, but no instead I got worse.
I started to lose my appetite, even to my favorite meals like spaghetti, burgers, or even fast food.
My strength became weak, very weak.
Whenever I exited or entered the van, I had to hold on to the handle and get in with a stool, so I could keep my balance.
At first, the older kids like Jeremy and Sara made me sick and uncomfortable.
They made me feel bad for being sick.
Sara whispered in my ear, I know you're faking."
then she said she was just joking around.
When we went to the cottage to rake the leaves, I had to stay inside.
For the first time, it felt wrong just sitting there watching the other kids do my raking job.
I wanted to help, but I couldn't.
When it was time for bed, instead of climbing the ladder to the top bunk, where I normally slept, I slept on the couch.
I wasn’t alone, Deb slept with me in the living room as well.
I watched what she had on until I fell asleep.
When morning came, I got up early around 8:30ish, said good morning to Deb, and I felt fantastic!
The sun was shining, blue sky, and I was alive.
Slowly my strength came back.
The only thing I could keep down was pediatrician milk.
The following day, we went down back to GR.
It was a half-hour drive from Grand Rapids to Remus.
When we got there, we unpacked and took care of everything.
Eventually, night came and it was bedtime.
All was fine til I had to use the bathroom downstairs!
I wasn't sleeping on the couch tonight.
As night passed, I had to use the restroom.
Even though I was sick and very unwell, I had no choice but to try and get to the bathroom.
When I got on the floor, I was about to pass out, when Sarah woke up and asked what was I doing, I mumbled something and almost passed out there, but I didn't.
I know I was making a lot of noise, but it was all accidental.
One person you do t want to wake in the Dubbink family is Deb.
You wake her, and you're dead!
I was almost there until my head started spinning and I couldn't see, because I was dizzy.
I banged and clattered around, waking Deb.
I used the restroom and went upstairs. Fell asleep, and it was quick, too quick, cause it was morning the next hour!
It was a Friday morning when I apologized to Deb after that night.
I was fully focused when I passed out again!
I could hear Deb saying leah...leah...Leah.... Leah!
When I woke up, I was on my way to the hospital.
Just as I entered the hospital, I was out.
When I got back home, I had a small bowl of cereal before we left for the cottage.
On the way to the cottage, I could hear Bruce calling my name.
Lizzy told him I was sleeping.
Just because I was sleeping, doesn't mean I can't hear.
We arrived at the cottage half an hour later.
While the kids unpacked the van I stayed inside and just sat on the couch.
It was going to be a busy weekend, for the leaves needed to be raked.
It was normally my chore, but for the first time, it felt weird not having to do anything.
My appetite slowly came back, because the only thing I could keep down was pediatrician milk.
By the time September rolled around l, I was feeling better.
I was well enough to go back to school, but my strength was still a little weak.
I must have picked the wrong time to come back to school, cause when I came back, my class was switching classrooms.
A lot of the students and staff welcomed me back.
The first day was the hardest.
Mr. Benson had me carry heavy books, even though I wasn't strong enough yet.
When I told Deb, she sent him an email, but he took it like a joke.
She wasn't happy.
This man touches me, hits me, and slaps me on my forehead.
He even pretended to be sick and coughed on me.
This man thinks he is funny, but in reality, he just isn't funny.
I couldn't wait to start middle school, or so I thought, but I was wrong, for Deb had a different way.
