Ch 4 : The Broken Door

744 Words
The knock came again. Three slow impacts echoed through the apartment. Knock. Knock. Knock. Mira stood frozen beside the couch, unable to tear her eyes away from the front door. The seven shadows beneath her feet twisted unnaturally across the wooden floor. Outside, thunder rolled across the city. Inside, every instinct in her body screamed that something was terribly wrong. The silver-eyed stranger standing in her destroyed doorway had not moved. Rain dripped from his black coat onto the floor. His gaze remained fixed on her. As if he were afraid she might disappear. As if he had finally found something he had spent an eternity searching for. "Mira." The way he spoke her name sent a strange shiver through her chest. She tightened her grip on the lamp she had picked up as a weapon. "Stop saying my name." The stranger blinked. A faint smile touched his lips. "You always hated being told what to do." "What?" The smile vanished. The sadness in his silver eyes deepened. For a brief moment he looked less like a dangerous intruder and more like someone carrying the weight of a thousand regrets. Then his expression changed. Instantly. Every muscle in his body tensed. His head snapped toward the hallway. The air grew colder. Much colder. Mira felt it too. A suffocating pressure settled over the apartment. The lights flickered. The seven shadows beneath her feet began moving violently. The stranger cursed. A single word. Ancient. Foreign. Terrified. "What is it?" Mira asked. The man didn't answer. Instead he stepped in front of her. Protectively. The action confused her. "We need to leave." "I'm not going anywhere with you." "Yes, you are." "No, I'm—" The front door exploded. The blast shook the entire apartment. Wood splintered in every direction. The metal frame twisted violently inward. Mira screamed and threw her arms over her head as debris rained across the room. When she looked up, her breath caught. A figure stood within the ruined doorway. Tall. Motionless. Dressed entirely in black. Its face remained hidden beneath a hood. Another figure appeared behind it. Then another. Then another. Seven in total. The same figures she had seen on the rooftop. The same figures from moments earlier. The stranger's silver eyes narrowed. "You're early." One of the hooded figures laughed. The sound was wrong. Not human. Not natural. Like broken glass scraping against metal. "We've waited a thousand years." The hood tilted slightly. "A few extra minutes seemed unnecessary." Mira's stomach dropped. A thousand years. The same phrase again. The same impossible number. Who were these people? And why did they keep speaking as if she belonged to another time? The silver-eyed stranger stepped forward. His body positioned itself between her and the intruders. "Leave." The lead figure laughed. "We both know that isn't going to happen." For several seconds nobody moved. Rain hammered against the shattered windows. Thunder echoed overhead. The tension in the room became unbearable. Then the lead figure slowly raised its head. Beneath the hood, two crimson eyes opened. Mira's blood turned to ice. The eyes weren't human. They glowed. Burned. Hungry. The creature stared directly at her. Not at the stranger. At her. A smile spread across its face. "At last." The words sounded almost reverent. Obsessed. Possessive. Mira instinctively stepped backward. The creature noticed. Its smile widened. "Do you know how long we've searched for you?" The silver-eyed stranger moved instantly. One moment he stood still. The next, he was in front of the creature. A violent shockwave exploded through the apartment. Furniture overturned. Glass shattered. The walls cracked. Mira stumbled backward. The stranger had moved too quickly for her eyes to follow. The crimson-eyed creature slammed into the hallway wall with enough force to pulverize concrete. Silence followed. Absolute silence. Dust drifted through the air. The stranger stood motionless. Dangerous. His silver eyes glowed brighter than before. "You don't get to speak to her." The apartment suddenly felt far too small. Because for the first time, Mira realized something terrifying. The stranger wasn't human. And neither were the things hunting her. The crimson-eyed creature rose from the rubble. Slowly. Casually. As if the impact had meant nothing. Then it smiled. "We found the Seventh Shadow." The room fell silent. Mira's heart stopped. The Seventh Shadow. The words echoed through her mind. Because somehow... Deep inside... A forgotten part of her already knew that name. And it was afraid...... to be continued.....
