THE DRIVER'S SECRET Chapter Sixteen: The Confession The evening breeze swept across the garden. Collins remained seated. Chief Peter stood a few steps away, his hands in his pockets. The question still hung in the air. > "Were you ever in a relationship with Ruth?" For several seconds, Collins couldn't speak. His mind raced. Should he deny it? Should he tell the truth? He remembered what he had once told Chief Peter. "A painful truth heals faster than a comfortable lie." He slowly stood up. "Yes, sir." Chief Peter closed his eyes. "I thought so." Collins continued. "We met years ago." "We fell in love." "We planned to spend our lives together." "But after she traveled home..." "We lost contact." "I searched for her everywhere." "I never found her." His voice trembled. "The day I saw her in this house..." "I realized life had moved on." "So I buried my feelings." Chief Peter listened without interrupting. --- The Question That Hurt Chief Peter looked directly into Collins' eyes. "Did you know Amara was your daughter?" Collins immediately shook his head. "No, sir." "I only found out that day in the garden." "I never knew Ruth was pregnant." "I swear before God." Chief Peter studied his face carefully. There was no sign of deceit. Only pain. Deep pain. Chief Peter sighed. "I believe you." Collins lowered his head. "I'm sorry." Chief Peter frowned. "Sorry for what?" "For existing." "If I had found Ruth earlier..." "None of this would have happened." Chief Peter's voice became firm. "No." "This isn't your fault." "You didn't abandon her." "You both became victims of circumstances." --- Ruth Is Called Later that night... Chief Peter sent a message asking Ruth to meet him in the study. She entered quietly. "You wanted to see me?" "Sit down." She obeyed. Chief Peter remained silent for nearly a minute. Then he placed the DNA report on the desk. Ruth stared at the envelope. Her hands began to shake. "So..." "You know." Chief Peter nodded. "I know Amara isn't my biological daughter." Fresh tears rolled down Ruth's cheeks. "I'm sorry." "I never wanted to deceive you." "I searched for Collins." "I looked everywhere." "I believed he had abandoned me." "I was carrying a child." "I was scared." "I didn't know what to do." Chief Peter listened quietly. Then he asked, "Why didn't you tell me the truth before we got married?" Ruth covered her face. "Because I was afraid." "Afraid of losing you." "Afraid my child would grow up without a father." "I made the worst decision of my life." "I've regretted it every single day." The room became silent except for the sound of her crying. --- A Husband's Heart Chief Peter stood up and walked toward the window. His back remained turned. "You know what hurts the most?" Ruth looked up. "It's not that Amara isn't my biological daughter." "It's that you carried this burden alone." "You cried alone." "You suffered alone." "You never trusted me enough to tell me." Ruth broke down completely. "I was ashamed." Chief Peter closed his eyes. "So was I." She looked confused. "What do you mean?" "I was ashamed..." "...that I never noticed how much pain you were carrying." --- Father and Daughter Outside... Amara was playing with a football. She laughed as Collins chased after her. "Catch me, Uncle Collins!" "I will!" She giggled and ran faster. Chief Peter watched them from the window. Then he whispered, "Maybe blood really does recognize blood." He saw the way Collins protected her whenever she stumbled. The way Amara instinctively reached for Collins' hand. The similarities he had ignored suddenly became impossible to overlook. --- A Decision No One Expected The next morning... Chief Peter invited both Collins and Ruth into the living room. Neither of them knew why. Chief Peter stood before them calmly. "I've spent the whole night thinking." Neither Collins nor Ruth spoke. "I have reached a decision." Ruth held her breath. Collins felt his heartbeat racing. Chief Peter continued, "I refuse to let hatred decide the future of this family." Both of them looked at him in surprise. He turned to Collins. "You are Amara's biological father." "Nothing can change that." Then he turned to Ruth. "I am the man who has raised her since birth." "Nothing can change that either." He took a deep breath. "So instead of asking who has the greater right..." "I want us to ask a different question." "What is best for Amara?" Silence filled the room. Chief Peter's eyes became moist. "I don't want my daughter to grow up surrounded by bitterness." "I want her to grow up surrounded by love." Collins couldn't hold back his tears. Neither could Ruth. But just as hope began to return... The front gate swung open. A luxury SUV drove into the compound at high speed. The security guard hurried toward the house. "Chief!" Chief Peter turned. "What is it?" "There's a woman outside." "She says she must see Collins immediately." Collins frowned. "A woman?" The guard nodded. "She says..." "...your life is in danger." The three of them exchanged shocked glances. None of them had any idea... That the visitor had come with a secret from Collins' past that would change everything once again. End of Chapter Sixteen
