Olivia stood frozen in the grand lobby of Kingsley Group Headquarters. Towering marble columns stretched toward a crystal ceiling, while a massive chandelier illuminated the luxurious interior. Employees in tailored suits walked briskly across the polished floor, each carrying an air of confidence and importance.
She looked down at her simple white blouse and navy-blue skirt. For the first time in years...She felt out of place."Miss Carter?"
A pleasant voice interrupted her thoughts. Olivia turned to see a young woman wearing a navy business suit.
She smiled warmly, "I'm Emily Foster, Mr. Kingsley's executive secretary." Olivia nodded politely. "It's nice to meet you." "Mr. Kingsley has been expecting you." Emily gestured toward a private elevator,n"This way, please."
As the elevator doors closed, Olivia noticed there were no buttons inside. Emily pressed her fingerprint against a small scanner, the elevator moved upward. "Only executives can use this elevator," Emily explained. Olivia smiled awkwardly, "I don't think I belong here." Emily looked at her through the reflection of the mirrored wall. "You'd be surprised." "What do you mean?"
"Mr. Kingsley has never personally chosen anyone to care for him." Olivia frowned. "So... I'm the first?"
Emily nodded "In eight years."
The answer only made Olivia more curious. Who exactly was Adrian Kingsley?
The elevator stopped on the top floor. The doors opened to a quiet hallway covered in soft gray carpet. Unlike the bustling floors below, this level was almost silent. Only a few assistants moved quietly between offices. Emily stopped before a pair of enormous black double doors. She took a deep breath before knocking. "Mr. Kingsley."
Olivia noticed something strange. Even Emily seemed nervous. A deep voice answered from inside. "Come in." Emily pushed the doors open, "Miss Carter has arrived." Olivia stepped inside. The office was larger than her entire apartment, Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked the city skyline.
Bookshelves lined one wall, Modern paintings decorated another. At the center of the room stood a large black desk. Behind it...Sat Adrian Kingsley. He wore a charcoal-gray suit despite the bandage still visible above his right eyebrow, His expression was calm. Unreadable.
He looked up from a stack of documents, Their eyes met. Olivia immediately recognized the same piercing gray eyes that had opened briefly in the emergency room. He studied her in silence. She suddenly became aware of how loudly her heart was beating.
Emily quietly excused herself, leaving them alone. The office fell silent. Adrian was the first to speak.
"So...""You're Olivia Carter." His voice was low and composed. "Yes."
"You almost refused my offer." Olivia met his gaze. "I wasn't looking for a wealthy employer." One corner of Adrian's mouth lifted ever so slightly.b"I noticed "You investigated me."
"I investigate everyone who enters my life." His honesty caught her off guard. She crossed her arms, "I don't like people invading my privacy." "I don't either." "Then why did you do it?" Adrian leaned back in his chair, "Because someone tried to kill me." Olivia's eyes widened. "What?"
"My car accident wasn't an accident." Silence filled the room. He folded his hands on the desk. "It was an attempted murder." Olivia stared at him, She searched his face for any sign that he was joking, There wasn't one. "You really believe someone wanted you dead?"
"I don't believe "I know." He stood and walked toward the window. "The brakes on my car were cut, "My security team confirmed it." Olivia slowly processed his words. "If that's true...""...why hire me?"
Adrian turned to face her, "Because I trust you." She blinked, "You barely know me." "I know enough." "You had every opportunity to let me die." "But you didn't, "You fought for a stranger." He walked closer. "Very few people would."
Olivia swallowed. "No nurse would abandon a patient." "You'd be surprised." His expression darkened briefly. A knock interrupted them. Daniel entered carrying a tablet.
"Sir." "What is it?"
"We've identified another suspicious transaction involving the vehicle maintenance company." Adrian nodded. "We'll discuss it later." Daniel glanced at Olivia, "I'm sorry for interrupting." Before leaving, he smiled politely, "Welcome to Kingsley Group, Miss Carter."
Adrian returned to his desk. "I've arranged accommodations for you." Olivia looked confused. "Accommodations?" "You'll be staying at Kingsley Manor." She immediately shook her head. "No." His eyebrows lifted. "No?"
"I'll care for you during working hours, "But I'm not moving into your house." Adrian remained silent for several seconds.
Then..."Your grandmother." Olivia's heart tightened. "What about her?" "I've already scheduled her surgery." She froze. "The best cardiac surgeon in the country will perform it." Her eyes widened."You...""You did that?"
"I keep my promises." Tears threatened to form in her eyes, Thank you for everything." He looked away. "Don't thank me yet." "This arrangement comes with conditions."
Olivia frowned. "What kind of conditions?"
He handed her another document. She quickly scanned the page. Her eyes stopped on the title. Confidentiality Agreement "You can't tell anyone about my medical condition, "My daily routine, "My family, "My business." "Anything you see inside Kingsley Manor stays there."
Olivia looked up. "That's... a lot." "My life is complicated." She nodded slowly. "I understand." As Olivia prepared to leave, Adrian spoke again. "Miss Carter." She turned. "Yes?"
He looked directly into her eyes, "One more thing." "If you ever feel unsafe...""Tell me immediately." She frowned. "Why would I feel unsafe?"
Adrian's expression became unusually serious. "Because whoever tried to kill me won't hesitate to target the people closest to me." The words sent a chill down Olivia's spine.
She walked out of the office with the confidentiality agreement in one hand and a hundred unanswered questions in the other. As the elevator doors closed, she had no idea that someone had been watching their meeting through a hidden security camera. In a dark room across the city, a mysterious figure smiled while looking at Olivia's photograph on a computer screen.
"So the nurse has finally entered the game." The figure slowly picked up a phone. "Keep an eye on her." "If Adrian trusts her she'll become his greatest weakness." The call ended, The screen went black.
