Knocking reached me through my blurred mind.
“Sofia?”
I groaned, wanting to respond to the voice calling out. My body felt like a sack of potatoes, just tossed on the ground, unable to move.
“Sofia, are you in there?”
Who the hell is Sofia? I wondered.
Get up, a voice whispered in my head.
Who’s that?
“Sofia? The door is locked!”
Get up, the voice repeated. Now!
My eyes shot open, but I was shocked by what greeted me. It was a floor and... some cabinets. I groaned again, trying to get my body moving, but it refused at first.
“Sofia!”
The knocking grew louder. Finally, I was able to push myself onto my hands, only to feel something dry and clumpy beneath them. I stared down at what looked like vomit on the floor.
Was that mine?
“Sofia!”
Who the hell is Sofia? I wanted to shout, only to turn toward the knocking. I didn’t recognize that door.
Tell her you’re okay, a voice said.
And that voice? Who is that in my head?
“W-Why?” I croaked out.
Just do it.
I cleared my dry throat.
“I’m fine!” I yelled.
“Are you sure? You missed dinner last night.”
“I’m fine. Really!” I shouted back.
I could sense the person’s hesitation behind the door before I finally heard their footsteps retreating. I let out a sigh of relief and rubbed my face, only to feel the vomit smeared across the side of it.
“Great,” I groaned.
Well done.
I froze.
“Who are you?” I whispered.
Well, the voice began, I’m... you.
“Me?”
Your... wolf?
My wolf didn’t sound like that. The last few years she had always spoken to me with anger. This voice was softer, more delicate. It made no sense.
“No, you’re not,” I insisted.
A sigh escaped her before she responded.
Get up.
“Why?”
Just do it.
I didn’t like this, but I did as instructed. Using the edge of the toilet—which I had clearly missed with the vomit—I pushed myself higher. My legs were shaking, barely able to carry me. I had never felt so weak before.
I pushed away from the toilet and grabbed onto the sink. Staring straight ahead, I was met with forest-green eyes, almost sparkling like emeralds, staring back at me.
“Who is that?”
It’s you, the voice said.
For a moment, her words made no sense. Then I looked down at my hands, only to look up and see the person doing the same as me. Carefully, with a shaking hand, I reached out and touched the mirror. The reflection followed my movements.
A scream tore from me as I stumbled back, slipping in the still-slightly-wet vomit. I fell flat on my ass.
“f**k!” I yelled.
Be quiet, the voice said.
“Who are you?” I shouted instead.
I told you, I’m your wolf.
“No, you’re not! My wolf doesn’t sound like that. She is...”
She was hard to describe, really, but not this. Not this soft and timid.
Well, I’m... this body’s wolf.
“This body?”
Yes, the body... you’re in.
“Sorry?”
Did you not just look at yourself?
“That’s not me!”
Exactly, the wolf said. Or it didn’t used to be you.
“I-I don’t understand!” I said, grasping my hair, not caring about getting vomit in it.
I’m still trying to understand it too.
“Oh, so you’re not the reason I now look like a... a...”
An omega? she finished for me.
An omega, I repeated.
Slowly, I pushed myself up from the ground again, just enough to look over the sink. That was the same person staring back at me: emerald eyes, dark hair, cute little freckles, and a pouty mouth.
I looked... adorable. Rather different from the tired and worn luna who used to stare back at me. But this... this wasn’t f*****g possible!
I know how this must seem, but you need to get up and get ready.
“Why?” I asked.
Otherwise people will wonder. We are usually up by now for our morning walk.
“Morning walk?”
It’s the only time we get to ourselves before we have to be around our alpha.
“Alpha? Darren?”
Whose Darren?
“My alpha.”
Our alpha is called Elijah.
“Elijah?” I repeated.
Yes.
“No, no, no,” I said, shaking my head and waving my hands in front of me. “There is no Elijah. There is Darren.”
I don’t know this Darren, but I will give you a rundown of everything. Just get ready.
For a moment, I just sat there, trying to wrap my head around it while this... wolf kept urging me to move. But I spent my time taking things in. My eyes landed on the door, noticing the lock was turned. Then they landed on the sink. Something stood beside it.
Was that a pill bottle?
But it was empty. I looked down at the vomit on the ground. The vomit that was also sticking to my hand...
“Um... did your former host... try to kill herself?” I whispered.
My new wolf responded with nothing but a whimper. Just then, I was hit with a memory, my head feeling as though it were being split in two. The sound of a gunshot echoed in my ears.
I clutched my head. It was so loud, as if it were happening to me again. My heart began hammering in my chest.
No, I thought. It couldn’t be...
But I could feel pain spreading through my back where the bullet had gone through me, stripping me of strength, draining me.
Had I... died?
Listen, we need to get up before someone comes to get us.
The wolf sounded scared. Perhaps it was wise to listen. Pushing myself up from the ground, I took another look around.
Shower first, then we clean up here.
For a moment, I just stared at the shower before finally doing as she said. I stripped off the clothes, only to stare down at a body I didn’t recognize. It was rather petite, but that was typical of omegas.
I turned on the warm water before stepping inside.
Okay, listen, in this household, we don’t hold a very high position, the wolf began.
Was that different from my other life? I was still certain this couldn’t be real. This was just a dream, I told myself.
We are being watched carefully.
“Why?”
Because it’s not that long ago that we got mated, and people are expecting us to continue the line.
“The line?”
The alpha line, of course.
“I see,” I murmured.
I found it strange that an omega had been chosen for that, though. As I had told my sister, alphas usually chose someone with more powerful blood, even if it wasn’t a luna.
We don’t really have many friends here.
“Is the alpha abusive too?”
“Oh no, he doesn’t raise a hand... he doesn’t... do much.”
Her words sounded confused, but it was one mystery on top of another. I could only handle so much.
I finished washing myself before wrapping a towel around my body.
Okay, let’s clean this up.
I did as instructed. All of this felt so incredibly real, but there was nothing wrong with playing along with a dream, right?
I finished cleaning everything and throwing away the pill bottle. Opening the door, I poked my head into the bedroom. I was shocked to find it larger than the one I remembered.
Closet!
I did as instructed and walked over to the closet. The wolf helped me pick out a few garments, but they were so plain and oversized. Unfortunately, that was mostly what remained in there, and all in dark colors.
I sighed and chose a pair of jeans and a hoodie instead before putting on fresh socks and shoes. I walked to the bedroom door, opened it, and poked my head out. I could hear the liveliness of the house, very much reminding me of my home.
No, this was my home, I thought.
I was merely imagining things this morning. I left the bedroom and walked down the hallway, but as I did, I noticed the decorations were different. Pictures hung on the walls of people I didn’t recognize, and the layout was different too.
This isn’t right, I thought.
Come on, go on!
The wolf inside me pushed me forward toward the staircase. We went down two floors.
This isn’t right either. My place has three.
Let’s go get our morning snack and then head outside!
But I kept looking around at this unfamiliar place. Just a dream, right? But it all seemed so... real. What is happening?
Come on!
She took over, controlling my body while my head kept swirling with questions.
Stay focused.
She forced my head forward, and I stepped into a kitchen smaller than I remembered. A few wolves worked on what I assumed was breakfast, but all of them were unfamiliar to me. Had a new team been brought in?
They merely glanced at me, then acted as if I were air. That was strange too. They usually still acknowledged me.
Go on. The food is ready.
I was pushed toward a plate that contained a piece of bread with some butter on it. I never ate that. My hand moved out and grasped it before I was turned around. I kept looking back at the wolves working before I was shoved out of the kitchen.
“Easy!” I hissed.
Outside!
My feet moved on their own, and I crossed a room I had no recollection of ever seeing. Moving through it, I went outside through a pair of glass doors and onto a large porch. The wind hit me right away, stronger than I remembered.
Okay, let’s get a little away from the house and chat.
I took over this time and walked across a large grassy area toward the forest. It was not unusual for a territory to have such vast forested areas, but my old one had also had a swimming pool.
Where was the pool? The one my sister and I had lounged at just a few days ago. I kept looking at the spot where it was supposed to be until the trees blocked my vision.
“Okay, enough!” I said, coming to a halt.
The wolf inside me whimpered.
“You need to talk!”
She seemed to contemplate her words.
“This is not real, is it? I’m not actually in somebody else’s body with... somebody else’s wolf inside me?” It sounded so weird that I shivered in disgust. “Am I?”
Do I really need to answer that?
“Yes! Yes, you f*****g do! How... why... this is...”
I know... I was a bit shocked too when I woke up. You’re... different.
“I’m different?” I exclaimed, gesturing to myself.
Calm yourself.
“Why?”
Because my other host never shouted. She was quiet.
“And?”
And you’re now... her.
For a moment, I merely let her words echo within me.
I’m her... her...
