Secrets Between Heartbeat

916 Words
Piper The days blurred. Between hospital runs, overtime shifts, and the loneliness of her small apartment, Piper was beginning to unravel. The morning sickness had faded, but everything else was louder — the silence in her phone, the distance in her reflection, and the weight of the life forming inside her. She hadn’t heard from Aiden in days. Not since that night where apologies hung between them like fog, thick and uncertain. She tried to move on. To focus on her brother’s medications, the overdue bills stacked on the table, the prenatal vitamins she kept forgetting to take. But late at night, when the city hushed and her body curled into itself, she missed him. His touch. His stubborn smirk. The way he looked at her like she wasn’t broken — even when she knew she was. It was almost midnight when her phone pinged. Mrs. Shane: Are you okay? Piper blinked, confused at first. Then the fog lifted. She had listed Mrs. Shane as her emergency work contact when she applied for her second job. Fingers trembling, she typed: Piper: I’m fine. Just tired. Why? The typing bubble came quickly. Mrs. Shane: I noticed something. I won’t say anything to anyone. But I think you need someone. Want to talk? Piper hesitated. No one — not even her mother — knew the full truth. She stared at the phone, her thumb hovering. Then, to her surprise, she typed: Piper: I’m pregnant. Seconds. Then a full minute. Then— Mrs. Shane: I knew. Come see me tomorrow after your shift. Please. Just talk to someone. Tears slipped down Piper’s cheeks before she even realized she was crying. Someone knew. And someone cared. ⸻ Aiden “Where the hell is your head at, Blackwood?” His father’s voice cracked across the boardroom like a whip, but Aiden didn’t flinch. He was staring at the city skyline, barely listening. Aiden blinked. “Nothing,” he lied. But everything was wrong. He had left Piper — again. He hadn’t meant to. He just… couldn’t breathe. The truth about his inheritance, the strings his father had pulled, the engagement arranged behind his back — all of it felt like quicksand. And Piper, glowing and raw and real — was the only thing that felt like air. He pulled out his phone under the table. No texts. No missed calls. He deserved that. After the meeting, he sat in his car outside the hospital. He didn’t go in. Couldn’t. What would he say? Hi, sorry I disappeared again. Sorry I left you carrying more than just feelings this time. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against the steering wheel. His chest ached. He hadn’t even told her he loved her. Not properly. And now? It might be too late. ⸻ Piper Mrs. Shane’s office was warm, soft-lit with potted plants and framed quotes about strength and motherhood. Piper sat on the couch like a visitor in someone else’s life. “I suspected,” Mrs. Shane said gently, offering her a cup of tea. “You’re a hard worker, Piper. But lately… you’ve been hiding in plain sight.” “I didn’t mean for this to happen,” Piper whispered. “You mean the baby?” Piper nodded. “Everything. Aiden. The hospital. My brother. My mom’s barely hanging on, and now—this. I’m… terrified.” Mrs. Shane nodded. “Can I ask something?” “Yes.” “Do you love him?” Piper hesitated. “I think I do. But he’s… gone. Disappeared. Again.” Mrs. Shane leaned forward, her voice firmer now. “Then love the child first. Build your world around that love. Aiden may come back. Or he may not. But this baby?” She placed a hand over Piper’s. “This baby is yours to protect. Yours to raise.” Piper felt her heart break and rebuild in the same moment. “I told my mom today,” she whispered. “How did she take it?” “She cried. At first she was angry. She said… how could I bring a child into this mess? We’re barely surviving.” “And then?” “She cried again. Hugged me. Said… we’ll find a way. We always do.” Mrs. Shane smiled. “That’s what mothers do.” ⸻ Aiden That night, he stood outside Piper’s apartment building again. But he didn’t knock. He looked up at the glowing windows and imagined her inside — curled up, protective hand over her belly, strong despite the storm. And then he turned away. Because he couldn’t show up empty-handed this time. He had made calls that day. Arranged transfers. Paid off her brother’s hospital bills anonymously. Found a specialist abroad and booked a consultation. The plane ticket would be delivered in two days. Maybe he couldn’t erase the pain. But he could fix what he broke. Then he’d come back. And maybe — just maybe — Piper would still have room in her heart for him. ⸻ Piper Two days later, the hospital administrator pulled her aside. “Miss Stone, your brother’s treatment has been covered. In full.” “What?” she choked. “By who?” They wouldn’t say. But in her gut, she already knew. And when the private medical team arrived to fly her brother overseas for better care, there was no doubt left. Aiden. He wasn’t gone. He was just fighting — quietly, from the shadows. And this time… he wasn’t running.
